One of the reasons why this final scene is so heartbreaking to me is because it mirrors a scene from The Visitor when Kira and Jake have a similar emotional scene by a window after Sisko is believed to be dead. A bittersweet parallel that shows you how good the DS9 writers really were.
I remember when this first aired back in 1999... I was around 14 or so think it was the first time in my life that I was actually moved to tears by a tv show or film... Not hysterical weeping mind you but I definitely needed a tissue... And I started to tear up just a little now watching this clip... DS9 was the only series in which I felt a true connection to the characters (i suppose the same way my mom does with her soap operas...)
Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world who enjoyed EVERY Star Trek series and can't bring myself to dislike any one of them. They all have something different to offer. DS9 was my favorite, however. I'm not afraid to pick a favorite.
When I see this clip I get a little emotional. The solo trumpet playing, with the station hanging in space! Perfect! I loved DS9 with a passion and still miss it almost 11 years after it finished.
I enjoy all of star trek series it is disappoinment when it all ends. All tv show must end even all startrek series. I think truly for the best of startrek the original and deep space nine it was set in on station and the stores came to them and the emissary was from earth part humand and part there god I though that was a good show and I enjoy watching from start to finish on dvd this show and all of the other startrek movies and series.
This show had a stellar team of writers , Rick Berman hardly wrote any of them. Which is why most of the episodes are good. To me this show stands at #1 for the best of the best. Evidence of that is the Episode, " In the pale moon light". where Sisko has to come to terms that he is not above lying and cheating to get what he needs, even if it is for the good of the Fed.
@astrangedave I felt that way about DS9 at first but with the theme of time revisited throughout the entire program I grew to love it. One of my favorite episodes is when O'Brien is sent to a prison where he lives out the rest of his life only to be rescued and discovers that it had only been a matter of days. There were so many episodes like this in the series that dealt with time, reality, and perception. It has become my favorite (even above TNG)
and don't get me started with Enterprise, although kudos goes to the players involved, It is my opinion they went in the wrong direction. As soon as they could, they started interleaving it with canonical events set up in the other series (ferengii in season 1e8 and borg in season 2), I think the process is known as 'standing on the shoulders of giants' I never really felt involved with the crew of the ncc-1701-x I always felt it lacked something and only got going until season 4,
@Thearbitrary I found the Andorian/vulcan/terralite/human alliance against the romulans and the later related episodes to be quite fascinating, as with the in a mirror darkly episodes.
@Thearbitrary I thought that! It should of detailed the early days of the Romulan and Klingon encounters - making them the primary enemies of the series. Also could of detailed more the meeting of some of the key species - they did with Andorians and Tellorites but could of done more!
to comment upon recent posts: I liked DS9 BECAUSE it was a change from the utopian future of TNG, Bajor had just come out of a century of war, looting of it's natural resources, oppresssion and murder of it's populace and occupation, so I suppose an analogy would be Britain or France after the second world war, only much much worse,it had a certain realism that purposely lacked, TOS was a hard act to follow and to make it go required a more true vision of Gene's vision it had to be brigher
@Thearbitrary I find normal people, or even not so normal people, rising up to be great people in spite of the darkness around them, in spite of hardship and betrayal, loneliness and misery, in spite of their own mistakes and shortcomings to be far more inspirational than an image of a utopian future. As Sisko said, "It's easy to be a saint in paradise."
@Thearbitrary actually, Bajor reminded me of Korea after WWII and the Cardassians the Japanese. Britain and France were never enslaved and oppressed. Korea was. Not to mention the fact that Bajorans have their family names first is kind of a dead giveaway. Bajorans have distinctive noses, Koreans have distinctive eyes...etc.
Something I have never noticed before is that the image of them being in the window provides a scale for the rest of the station, and the station is seen dwarfing the Enterprise. However if you see people standing on the Enterprise (Generations) it's much, much larger than the station. The image of them in the window makes the station look small.
DS9 is by far the best series. It established deep characters that you really feel are real and alive. The series ending was a monument to Star Trek. The best thing that hapened after that was First Contact and possibly Voyager.

I have to say i liked and grew up with TNG which for my money was still the best Trek but DS9 had somthing special, it was for me the final goodbye to the Trek universe, its when the HISTORY OF THE FUTURE really came to a close, VOY was ok but Enterprise was truly awful, a betrayal of Rodenberrys vision and dream so it was a sad day in 1999 when i finally had to say goodbye, a great end to a great series and franchise!

I never watched a lot of DS9 until midway through this year. I grew up on TNG, and it's still my favourite in terms of acting talent, but DS9 really grew on me and introduced a lot of wonderful ideas like Section 31 and GARAK(!), and an over-arching storyline. I was sad to see DS9 end, because I had become very attached to the characters. Unlike TNG, which was episodic and story-focused, DS9's focus on character development is quite touching. Ah well, at least the voyages continue in the books.

@elcap22 couldn't agree with you more, still in 20 yrs or so, they'll re-visit it and hopefully do as good a job as Russell T Davis and Steven Moffat are doing with Doctor Who, with Luck I'll still be around to see it :D
@Thearbitrary: Please, let's HOPE some hack akin to Russel T. Davies doesn't decide to pick up the reigns of Star Trek. You'll get a series worse than "Enterprise". Someone like Steven Moffat, on the other hand. . .
@elcap22 Oh Cmon, I mean it was really one of the best star treks, but voyager wasn't that bad. Actually, i enjoyed that too, it had a kind of feeling.
Well-said, elcap22, and I agree. As a watcher of all of the Star Trek series, I agree that this one was special. TNG and Voyager had their moments, but DS9 captured a lot more of the real-life complexity and grey-areas that would be met in real life. The inter-character story-building during the seven seasons it ran wrapped up nicely in the last season. Found myself getting emotional during several of the season seven episodes, especially the last two!
@elcap22 You are perfectly right. Voyager went into the wrong direction from the very beginning (both literally and figuratively), Enterprise failed in everything that made Star Trek what it was. DS9 is still the culmination of the Star Trek Universe, still my favourite of the shows, and they should have left it at that.
@elcap22 It's true that Star Trek series has been in a downward spiral since ending DS9. However, we must not forget the dream of Gene Roddenberry to keep things going, and not forget them. No one thought that after the TOS series was finsihed that there would be another. Since then, we have TNG, DS9, Voyager, and the most recent Enterprise series. Some were great, some not so great. But thats why we must keep trying over and over, until we live in the world that Gene envisioned for us all.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@elcap22 it's the worst ST series. It's not even Star Trek as there's no "trek" in it. And it's dark and warlike something Roddenberry would have loathed plus Avery Brooks is a piss poor actor with an insufferable style of line delivery. Not to mention the whole bullshit about Bajor's religion...STUPID!
@elcap22 I sadly agree. But It was Paramounts fault. Instead of dark and more realistic they went to happy and campy (not to mention unoriginal) like Voyager. When Enterprise tried to go more serial like DS9 and bring in DS9 ideas like Section 31, it was too late and they finished the show with a TNG episode(damn Berman and Braga).
I never really "got" DS9. I'm gonna get thumbs down and angry replies but I don't believe this is what Star Trek should have been like. There was too many moral themes going on, and they seemed like they were put in on purpose to just try and be moral for the sake of it. Too many lesbian/gay things and stuff, I don't think this is how Roddenbury would have wanted Star Trek. TNG and TOS are the best
-supposedly- Roddenbury had approved of this shortly before dying. the producer claims he would have liked its darker themes as he was a war veteran. The moral themes WERE put there on purpose and rightfully so as that was one of the things that made this series unique (and in my opinion) exceptional from the others. while the entertainement value can be argued over...
having another series of 1-dimensional mary-sues spew techno-babble while they brush with death on their continuing mission we have already seen before, would not have been original
@Robotdrummerzzk Roddenberry was a liberal leftie. He envisioned an end to capitalism & racism, where races started working together (Federation) and loved each other (eg. Kirk & alien women).
He envisioned a world without money where everybody worked for the good of mankind and to better themselves. You may be surprised but that is actually the definition of communism, if you take a moment to look it up.
Finally TOS episodes always had a moral overtone about right vs wrong, logic vs emotion.
@murphe777 Don't get me wrong, I know Gene believed in all of those things (Despite how sexist TOS is), but I don't think he would have taken it to those depths, might just be me. Life on board a space station never quite caught on, even if they did enter the Gamma quadrant from time to time.
@Robotdrummerzzk Too many lesbian/gay things?! There was 2 'gay' kisses in 7 years, and both of them were played as 'exceptional circumstances', so they really weren't 'gay' at all. We gay people do exist you know, Star Trek skirting around the issue, basically pretending that we don't in the future was a little irritating.
@peachmanflossboypeac It's not the sort of thing that interests me, and I'd rather have stories about space exploration than soap dramas. DS9 was awful.
I guess you missed the episodes that dealt with homosexuality?
"The Outcast" dealt with a genderless society that saw different sexuality as wrong, and the overall message of the episode was that people should be free to choose who they love.
There were other episodes which also dealt with the topic.
While there weren't too many episodes dedicated to it, there were lines that indicated homosexuality wasn't "different" to them, it was accepted.
@Draknfyre No I've seen it, I think it's a shame an alien society was needed to even touch upon the issue, when it could have been a subtle thread of the fabric of the show. They could have at least cast a guy as the 'androgynous' alien, at least that would have been a tiny bit ground breaking for Trek.
Homosexuality MAY be indicated as acceptable in Trek (though I can't honestly see when), however it seems none of those officers ever made it to the Enterprise, DS9 or Voyager!
Jonathan Frakes wanted it to be a guy, he thought it would increase the impact of the story, but the producers didn't want to be a guy.
Check out the episode of DS9 where Pell came in and became Quark's partner. she has to pretend to be male due to Ferengi society customs. She started obviously falling in love with Quark, and Jadzia encouraged her. When she found out she was a woman, she said "YOU'RE A WOMAN?", it was completely acceptible to her that "he" was
persuing him. Quark, when confronted by Pell, said he "wasn't interested", but didn't make a comment about it being "wrong" or anything. He simply wasn't interested in another male.
There are bits here and there that indicate it's accepted. It's not a "hey, we don't make a big deal out of either sexuality" line, but it's lines here and there between the characters.
I just watched DS9 from start to finish took me about 4 mounths. was so good I feel so bad for jake I feel like he got left behind. captin Sisko never even said good bye or anything. cant believe its over. loved the friendship of julian and o'brine. and I mist jadzia at the end felt like she was missing. my fav charicture is between worf and the chief O'Briane. but they all made the whole picture together. so sad its over but now I can get back to realaty!
God damn this still tears me up! Looking at Jake seeing the wormhole wondering if his dad will ever come home as Kira gently puts her hand on his shoulder is just beautiful! DS9 was a beautiful show. As someone said its one of the best Trek had to offer. Ten years on its still missed.
This star trek was best and ending only confirms it. Stunning music for ending. DS9 everytime had great music scores. Everytime i see this it brings me to tears. This is only star trek series from the heart and that is so great about it.
My god, had forgotton that this was the final scene. I miss DS9 so much, it was better than THG and better than Voyager too, The other two programmes had their merits but DS9 had everything.
Wish they'd bring it back. As a previous poster below said ' most understaed Star Trek ' by far. I couldnt agreee with you more mate
I remember back to that days - When I was watched then on video cassetes.. it was the time around christmas and I was a younger boy. Such a peaceful time that was.
and the best thing is.. they didnt leave it with an open...what next question. they finished on all the mains charcs story. some stay some go but they show us tht and where.
Gah, always leaves me with a funny, sad, je-ne-said-quoi feeling in my stomach watching this last scene. It's all over, real life goes on. I miss this programme, I watched it religiously growing up and was a large reason I went on to study maths and physics at uni. Thank you, Startrek.
The saddest and most poignant ending ever...BEAUTIFUL episode and the best star trek series out of the lot. Star Trek really did do War and Peace in 7 seasons of DS9...sadly missed.:(
Voyager tied in with DS9 in that they left the station and then got slung to the other edge of the galaxy. So, no "interactions" with any other characters, save for "Q".
I still say a fun episode would have been 'Q' vs. the Prophets! LOL
What could have made Voyager a good show is if Wesley Crusher was a crew-member, instead of creating the Tom Paris character.
Thus, the storyline of Beverly being alone after losing her son, only to learn that he is in the Delta Quad and on his way back, would have boosted ratings by tying into many TNG episodes.
It could have been a way to work in many Picard cameos as well. Imagine what a series finale for Voyager than would have been, rather than this 'Paris' family.
All three Trek shows (TNG, DS9 & VOY) were cast in the same time frame. Wes as a crewmate on Voyager would have been weird. But, Worf ended up on DS9, as well.
The dumbest ending was TNG's, with Picard "hop-scotching" (as was once said) between three 'times', having all three "Enterprise D" ships destroyed and having 'Q' tell him he saved humanity, etc. Very odd ending.
Each show had its own merits and I still like DS9 the best. I even have a baseball autographed by Avery Brooks!
All the sequels, barring Enterprise because it precedes TOS, have used a previous series character to help connect everything together. McCoy had to be 137years old, of course, but it was a good scene.
The extra of previous characters was nice in several episodes.. especially Spock & Scotty in TNG, and Sulu and Voyager was very good. Kirks death in Generations was poorly done, however.
Hell yeah for 1701-C! Although, Garret would need a lot of botox at this point. And, I wouldn't want the series finale to be a rehash of Yesterday's Enterprise though. Just a nod to it, like the red alert sounds and they warp towards the attack on the outpost. Yes. I've thought about this.
The thing about DS9 is that it was Trek, but it was different; TNG was GREAT, but it was also a different take on the TOS formula, while VOY and ENT were just coasting on TNG's fumes. DS9 was different, and might just be the strongest overall series, although I think TNG had stronger individual episodes. It sucks that it's the blacksheep of the franchise (George Takei in particular been VERY critical of DS9).
DS9 was a thing of beauty. They didn't shy away from making bold and brave decisions. And this touching ending reflects seven years of brilliance most notably i feel episodes such as
"in the pale moonlight"
"far beyond the stars"
"the visitor
"the siege of AR-558"
all represent the best DS9 and indeed star trek has to offer.
@u2atomicbomb u forgot duet i think that duet is also one of the best ds9 episodes i also like nor the battle nor the storng byt my fave 2 is the pale moonlight and the siege or ar
Definately a sad scene. But i always used to love the scene just before this, or i think it was, when it showed clips of each character from over the years. Damn DS9 was great, if only we had this for 7 more years rather than Enterprise, or hell, Voyager.
Thank you for posting this gem. Brings tears to my eyes, too - I LOVED these characters so much! I thought that the farewell episode was good as farewell episodes go (St. Elsewhere and Buffy were the only two really good shows to have amazing farewell episodes, in my book) and I agree that the departing shot was very well done.
i didnt like the ending but i cant think of a better way to do it but i loved this episode. This is my FAVOURITE episode but i prefer Voyager's ending.
The ending of Ds9 was perhaps the saddest of all endings for any show. The last episode of Next Gen was sad only for the reason it was over, but the crew and friends were still together. That is a good thought to leave on. Ds9 everyone split up for the most part. Sisko leaving when getting a new child, Bashir and Obrien loosing a friendship and so on. Just sad.
So it's still $250 USD for the complete series of TNG, DS9, or Voyager on DVD. You'd need to find 2800 people to throw in $250 to make one new episode, and 72,800 people to put in the same amount of money for a 26-episode season. How hard do you think it would be to find 72,800 people worldwide willing to pay the cost of owning the complete series just to see what happens next? You've got one right here...
im right there with you lol, i want to see more star trek but sadly the noobs at the broadcast company ended those shows now we must make one for free lol, ok maybe not, but lets try adn get back at the studio for being noobz
This was the best spin off from the original series.

@elcap22 Oh Cmon, I mean it was really one of the best star treks, but voyager wasn't that bad. Actually, i enjoyed that too, it had a kind of feeling.
But the new enterprise sucks, that's a fact.

Found myself getting emotional during several of the season seven episodes, especially the last two!
abliving1 1 year ago
@elcap22 You are perfectly right. Voyager went into the wrong direction from the very beginning (both literally and figuratively), Enterprise failed in everything that made Star Trek what it was. DS9 is still the culmination of the Star Trek Universe, still my favourite of the shows, and they should have left it at that.
Restitutus 1 year ago
@elcap22 It's true that Star Trek series has been in a downward spiral since ending DS9. However, we must not forget the dream of Gene Roddenberry to keep things going, and not forget them. No one thought that after the TOS series was finsihed that there would be another. Since then, we have TNG, DS9, Voyager, and the most recent Enterprise series. Some were great, some not so great. But thats why we must keep trying over and over, until we live in the world that Gene envisioned for us all.....

@elcap22 it's the worst ST series. It's not even Star Trek as there's no "trek" in it. And it's dark and warlike something Roddenberry would have loathed plus Avery Brooks is a piss poor actor with an insufferable style of line delivery. Not to mention the whole bullshit about Bajor's religion...STUPID!
sondano 10 months ago

Robotdrummerzzk 1 year ago
@Robotdrummerzzk

Finally TOS episodes always had a moral overtone about right vs wrong, logic vs emotion.
murphe777 1 year ago
@murphe777 Don't get me wrong, I know Gene believed in all of those things (Despite how sexist TOS is), but I don't think he would have taken it to those depths, might just be me. Life on board a space station never quite caught on, even if they did enter the Gamma quadrant from time to time.
Robotdrummerzzk 1 year ago
@Robotdrummerzzk Too many lesbian/gay things?! There was 2 'gay' kisses in 7 years, and both of them were played as 'exceptional circumstances', so they really weren't 'gay' at all. We gay people do exist you know, Star Trek skirting around the issue, basically pretending that we don't in the future was a little irritating.
peachmanflossboypeac 10 months ago
@peachmanflossboypeac It's not the sort of thing that interests me, and I'd rather have stories about space exploration than soap dramas. DS9 was awful.
Robotdrummerzzk 10 months ago

I guess you missed the episodes that dealt with homosexuality?
"The Outcast" dealt with a genderless society that saw different sexuality as wrong, and the overall message of the episode was that people should be free to choose who they love.
There were other episodes which also dealt with the topic.
While there weren't too many episodes dedicated to it, there were lines that indicated homosexuality wasn't "different" to them, it was accepted.
Draknfyre 8 months ago
@Draknfyre No I've seen it, I think it's a shame an alien society was needed to even touch upon the issue, when it could have been a subtle thread of the fabric of the show. They could have at least cast a guy as the 'androgynous' alien, at least that would have been a tiny bit ground breaking for Trek.
Homosexuality MAY be indicated as acceptable in Trek (though I can't honestly see when), however it seems none of those officers ever made it to the Enterprise, DS9 or Voyager!
peachmanflossboypeac 8 months ago
@peachmanflossboypeac
When she found out she was a woman, she said "YOU'RE A WOMAN?", it was completely acceptible to her that "he" was
Draknfyre 8 months ago
@peachmanflossboypeac
persuing him.

I've thought for many years that Sci-Fi and Paramount should team up for a DS9 mini or limited series based some of the Relaunch novels.
redheadguy73 2 years ago
Voyager tied in with DS9 in that they left the station and then got slung to the other edge of the galaxy. So, no "interactions" with any other characters, save for "Q".
I still say a fun episode would have been 'Q' vs. the Prophets! LOL
dave929 2 years ago
What could have made Voyager a good show is if Wesley Crusher was a crew-member, instead of creating the Tom Paris character.
Thus, the storyline of Beverly being alone after losing her son, only to learn that he is in the Delta Quad and on his way back, would have boosted ratings by tying into many TNG episodes.
It could have been a way to work in many Picard cameos as well. Imagine what a series finale for Voyager than would have been, rather than this 'Paris' family.
kmg4 2 years ago
All three Trek shows (TNG, DS9 & VOY) were cast in the same time frame. Wes as a crewmate on Voyager would have been weird. But, Worf ended up on DS9, as well.
The dumbest ending was TNG's, with Picard "hop-scotching" (as was once said) between three 'times', having all three "Enterprise D" ships destroyed and having 'Q' tell him he saved humanity, etc. Very odd ending.
Each show had its own merits and I still like DS9 the best. I even have a baseball autographed by Avery Brooks!
dave929 2 years ago
That would've been interesting. Janeway and crew could've run into Wes and the Traveller out there. I mean, they met everyone else for gods' sake!
redheadguy73 2 years ago
In the pilot TNG, McCoy starred.
In the pilot DS9, Picard starred.
In the pilot VOY Quark starred.
Kirks death in Generations was poorly done, however.

yeahh the captain of the enterprsie B was to stuck up XD...
frostymoviesjp 2 years ago
Hell yeah for 1701-C! Although, Garret would need a lot of botox at this point. And, I wouldn't want the series finale to be a rehash of Yesterday's Enterprise though. Just a nod to it, like the red alert sounds and they warp towards the attack on the outpost. Yes. I've thought about this.
redheadguy73 2 years ago
Yeah Enterprise C FTW !!!
but with like new actors and all that mabey a slightly younger Garrat !! and yeah thats a pretty good idear 4 the season final episaod 4 it !
frostymoviesjp 2 years ago
The 24th century had 3 series' of 7 seasons each. It is done.
Now, it is time for a bold, new 25th century series. Since lifespans are long, it can have cameos from all three 24th century casts of characters.
The time for a new 25th century series is NOW.

This is my personal favorite on Star Trek series. It had that "Epic" feel that TNG or Voyager or even TOS had for me.
Xerothn 3 years ago 2
The thing about DS9 is that it was Trek, but it was different; TNG was GREAT, but it was also a different take on the TOS formula, while VOY and ENT were just coasting on TNG's fumes. DS9 was different, and might just be the strongest overall series, although I think TNG had stronger individual episodes. It sucks that it's the blacksheep of the franchise (George Takei in particular been VERY critical of DS9).

DS9 was a thing of beauty. They didn't shy away from making bold and brave decisions. And this touching ending reflects seven years of brilliance most notably i feel episodes such as

"far beyond the stars"
"the visitor
"the siege of AR-558"
all represent the best DS9 and indeed star trek has to offer.

riggy1990 3 years ago
The ending of Ds9 was perhaps the saddest of all endings for any show. The last episode of Next Gen was sad only for the reason it was over, but the crew and friends were still together. That is a good thought to leave on. Ds9 everyone split up for the most part. Sisko leaving when getting a new child, Bashir and Obrien loosing a friendship and so on. Just sad.
kuribo1 3 years ago 5
That was the theme of the episode - "What You Leave Behind". Odo leaves Kira, Ben leaves Jake, etc, etc..........

Thearbitrary 3 years ago
So it's still $250 USD for the complete series of TNG, DS9, or Voyager on DVD. You'd need to find 2800 people to throw in $250 to make one new episode, and 72,800 people to put in the same amount of money for a 26-episode season. How hard do you think it would be to find 72,800 people worldwide willing to pay the cost of owning the complete series just to see what happens next? You've got one right here...
