HELL YEAH!! My favorite! I have one, although it's much smaller, made by Athearn. They discontinued it unfortunately. I managed to get a replacement "finished" body/shell to replace the one that someone broke on me when they packed it! This is the only time I've seen one in action, here on YouTube. Must've been sweet recording this! Awesome video!
That was neat, What a rare loco, them being so long and equipped with 4-wheel axle trucks with a total of 16 wheels, what a monsterous unit, sure wish these were on regular use, I understand these units won't run on hills as well as only can run on extremely super wide curved track ONLY!!! Thanks for sharing this video Keep up the great work!!
it is like our deltic Royal Scots Grey 55022 this loco is only used for specail runs just like the loco on your video we also have 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier and 55015 Tulyar and 55016 Gordon highlander and 55002 the king`s own yorkshire light infantry the derltic has 3,300 hp and I like all diesel locomotives I think that these locomotives are impressive I have only seen few oo gauge models of them.
Ain't she a beautiul engine? The story is that Bill Wimmer, VP of engineering for UP watches the amount of movement in that engine to determine the condition of the track and roadbed. The Idaho car on the rear of the train has "front view" mirrors that he watches while they roll down the track. Wimmer loves that engine, I'm told and specifies it for his engineering specials.
@PhantomDark21 The DD40AX was built back when other older engines were being built like the SD40, SD45, GP40, U30C, U36C and so on. Locomotive technology has greatly advanced since the days when the DD40AXs were built and in they require double the amount of fuel than a single engine locomotive. Plus horsepower is catching up in the newer engines--todays standard horsepower engine is 4,400 hp with some 5,000 & 6,000 hp whereas the DD40 is at 6,600.
@ethicomm that engine is used for excursions usually, and occasionally in revenue service from what i know. of course, they would use it on a short but heavy special load that had a tight deadline because its such a powerful engine.
In the 1980` the UP reactivated 15 6900's because of a power shortage. I wrote the UP as to where I could see these in action. They replied between North Platte & Cheyenne. I went to Ogalala NB. The UP ran 6900's in the mid consist. I Chased a 6900 on Old 30 from Paxton NB. I had to go 83MPH just to get ahead to get a photo. 1 Mile freight, NEVER went below 65MPH through towns. I got a shot with a 6900 on the point & MKT GP40 trailing. The 6900 had no problem @ 79 MPH.Worth the trip!!!!
Emm look at Guinness book of record or Wikipedia and you will see that ˝Centennial˝ is probably the biggest ever, it was almost 30m long, onl steam Big Boy and Gas Turbine UP#18 were bigger, but both were built by few wagons, like Deltic! The Centennial is one piece!
@YTisawsum DDA40X has 6,600 hp (horsepower), and the Third Generations of the UP turbines they're 8,500 hp, so you're right on that. DDA40X isn't the biggest locomotive. The rest of the turbines are 4,500 hp.
@MrLuebeck Be careful using the word "Biggest"That's very different than saying"more powerful".The DDA44x is the"BIGGEST"& heaviest diesel-electric locomotive ever produced but not the most powerful! Yes, 3rd gen turbines produced 8500hp but those were jet engines & those are very light compared to reciprocating-piston diesel engines. Jets produce large amounts of power too. That's why planes use jet turbine engines.
the "veranda" term is used on UP68 2nd generation, of course this was the same gas turbines as on UP18, but the streamlined carbody is used and those external walkways make it veranda! well you probably already know that, for few feets it was shorter than UP DDA40XX, also they were later converted into diesel powered and still didn't acquire any record as the biggest diesel loco in the world.
@MrLuebeck yes they are 8,500 hp and as so they are more powerful, and also (if you take in all the set) it is the longest!
But, if you look that UP DDA40XX is consisted by one unit, then you will see that there is no locomotive bigger, cos all other have multiple setup, as for the 3rd Generation of GTEL is consisted from three cars, 1st is the loco with operating room and gas turbines and electric generators, 2nd unit is diesel, the 3rd one is tender with 105m2 of fuel for gas turbine!
@foroke1 The DDA40x IS the largest & most powerful diesel-electric locomotive, at 6600hp, in the world! The one in China you refer to is the Dalian Locomotive-EMD which is the largest & most powerful diesel-electric locomotive, at 6300hp, in production & in current use but is NOT the largest-most powerful in the world. That one is the DDA40x.

I wonder why union pacific dont make any more DDX40A? Maybe its too expensive to built? Or it just too bulky?

Why such a large, powerful locomotive for such a relatively short train?
ethicomm 1 year ago
Just for show, basically. This locomotive is only used once in awhile for special trains like this.

Thanks, appreciate the reply.

@HighIronofWisconsin also the respect for this locomotive is high the private carsalso therefore using it for that
