I was at this game, wins were hard to come by this season and it was awesome to see Morozov bury it for the OT winner. I was sitting up above the net on that end for that goal. Awesome.
Best best scenario would have been: re-signed everyone but Roberts and Malone, signed Hossa for 7mil/7 years, sign Morozov (lol), and sign Naslund for 1.5mil. We would have been sitting pretty in the east for quite some time, and won 3 or 4 cups in a row and give detroit a run for its money. Just think about it, Crosby, Malkin, Hossa, Naslund, Morozov, Fleury, it woulda been sweet...*sigh*
I'm not too sure if we'll go after Kovy, it would be nice and a deep playoff run is basically a given at that point, neither am I sure if it would be such a smart deal to pull to the trigger on, at what cost would it take to get Kovalchuk to wear black and gold? Most certainly it would involve Staal+Kennedy (or + 1st Round Pick)
even worse, he's actually producing in Detroit, which to be honest is kinda surprising considering the fact that I was assuming that Zetterberg and Datsyuk would stay on the first line and Hossa would be on Franzen's line, but oh well, let's bring Kovalchuk to the burgh!
it would be nice, but im pretty sure he does not care for crosby, and while professionals can get over that kind of thing, you dont want to spend that much money for someone who could be a cancer in the locker room, and hes done next to nothing in atlanta, although the blame doesnt fall squarely on him
i would really love to see them pursue marian gaborik, but someone will overpay for him this summer. kovalev ending his career as malkin's winger could be an interesting addition as well
blaming the problems of atlanta on kovi are ridiculous, hes always been great. but its ONLY been him, hes got no team.
its starting to change now, so i wouldnt even be sure he is going to go to a different team. and if he does it wont be Pitt. they couldnt afford him anyway
But I'd rather have someone like Marian Hossa (yea, i know, i dont like him either) or Gaborik play on Sid's wing. Or we could try to make a serious run at Zetterberg if Detroit fails to re-sign him next season (though very unlikely at best).
Well, he signed a 3-year contract (money was not disclosed), he would be entering his final year of the contract this season, he's about 31 now and will turn 32 this coming year in '09 (February 16). I think he might want to try his hand in the "new" NHL again come the 09-10 season. He'll have another 3 or 4 more good years in him left, or if he's a beast, another 6 years, but 3-4 is realistic. (because not everyone can play forever like the badass that is Gary Roberts)
I think there's a good chance that Morozov will come back to the Pens a year from now, if anything he'll be a good addition to Malkin's line to play with Sykora, or (hopefully Sykora's stays) replace Sykora on the right. Think about this combo: Fedotenko-Malkin-Morozov with Gonchar on D, pretty sweet right? Morozov could play on Sid's line too but thats provided his defensive play doesn't slip.
To be honest with you, there wasn't anyone else on the market that could have been better than Fedotenko and Satan, other than maybe Ryder, Naslund and Sundin. So it wouldn't have made a difference in hell if Hossa warned us. Obviously we can't afford Sundin and we're loaded down the center position, so Naslund and Fedotenko would have been the 'B' choices. Hossa was top prize of the free agent frenzy, and we got pwnt. But I was looking forward to Naslund returning.. :(
Actually, the best scenario for Hossa leaving would have been: Naslund for 3.5mil for 2 years, and re-signing Malone, Ruutu, and BGL so that we could keep our role-players and gritty forwards. Hall should have been resigned, dont know wtf happened there. Scary Gary would have been gone anyway, so at trade deadline we could have gotten Gaborik for a draft pick and Goligoski from the Baby Pens.
If he came back now...playing on Sid's line, or even better, playing with his fellow Russian compatriot, Malkin, that would just be a sick line, this is the new NHL and I would bet you more than anything that Morozov would put up even better numbers here than in the KHL (used to be the Russian Super League). Only reason why he's still there is because of his family and close ties with Ak Bars Kazan's upper management. But when he comes back it'll be as a PENGUIN. GO PENS!
wow that was really cool. its a shame we never saw morozov in his prome like he is now, hopefully he makes a return and hopefully its with the hawks :)
Thank you for posting this! I was there and it was one of the best Penguins moments in history, despite the fact that the game was meaningless in the standings.

Boy I'd love to bring him back. He'd be great to put with Crosby or Geno

He hit almost the worst possible time to be in the NHL and was totally misused. Now he's a star. Imagine having him on Malkin's wing.

Definitely one of the most memorable moments in Pens history, if only for the fact that there were so few that season

This is touching. I miss Morozov and so do the Pens. Their wingers this year suck.
