Great lesson. WOnderfull voice amazing rhytm, U bloody well rule young lady.. Joni sings it in E so you can capo in 2 fret if you like. May I suggest a liitle alteration ?
The "E chord" (which in this case is a D) The E7 is very nice but when you move it up 1 fret you might want to fret like this:
3 fret 2 string
3 fret 4 string
that would be the usual blues turnaround in open D.
Yes I agree, best on You Tube, you're an excellent tutor. I'ved picked up the chords easily. I could listen to you all day. You have a lovely voice and you play really well. I hope you have a successful career in music. I wish "You Tube" had been around in my college years - foolishly went to Art School instead.
Oh, and by the way - to quote Captain Corelli, "Bella Bambena, at 2 0' clock!!"
You're very talented.Cheers for taking the time to explain this brilliantly. There are a few ways to play Big Yellow Taxi but I think your's sounds the nicest.I love the chords and sounds that Joni Mitchells tunings produce.
That was most excellent. Love Joni Mitchell, and there's not very many tutorials online for her songs so if you posted more, that would be great. Well, maybe you already have. This is the first video of yours that I came across. Great guitar playing, great singing, great performance, and great tutorial...thanks for posting!
This is awesome! :) Can anyone tell me how often exactly do I have to strike the "A" chord and the "A" chord + Add-on at 5:05-5:09 ?! Can't really make it out :/
great job. I personally play this in open e, which is pretty much the same song, just a bit different I guess. I like the bluesy-ness of open d compared to open e though.
@raynay62 Probably shouldn't watch these videos of people who can play the guitar better than me. There's a video online of a woman who tries to teach synchopated finger-picking. I can still only do it with the simplest of rythms. Think you're a good guitar player? Check out Sungha Jung's channel (jwcfree). That should dispel any illusions you might've had...
Think maybe it's a hummingbird..... Gibson. Nice guitar. A little girly tho :-) Even tho I think maybe Elvis used one.... Not sure, but u never know :-)
Ashlee... I started playing my Martin D28 (it's over 41 years old already) with Open D tuning several years ago because it gave a fullness to the sound and allowed me to finger pick and incorporate more bass runs into it than conventional tuning (I started out as a bassist). I still can play conventional, but my fat fingers always want to revert to open tuning chords. What the hell. I'm having fun at least. You seem to enjoy it too. Nice!
takes longer to set the guitar than it does to play the tune.then what do you do when you want to play another song for the love of God "Yeah here's my Big Yellow Taxi Guitar, and here's my Southern Cross guitar and here's my Jason Mcoy guitar................................ect..............LMAO
I love your version of this song...I also liked how you went over the tuning in such a way that helps people figure out how they can do it "on the fly." Thanks!
Hey Ashlee, your video is F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C-! You are so beautiful, your voice is wonderful, you are a great guitarist and a very very good teacher! I think that everyone can learn to play guitar with you. You make every step very easy. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
I'd noticed Joni playing this in an open tuning and just straight bar chords, once even from 1970 with capo on 2, probably when her voice was higher pitched, and like your open tuning turorial! Thanks! I'll be playing this song this Saturday night at a gig.
Thx 4 posting. This is wonderfull.. In open D tuning this shape 000000 is D this shape 020100 is G7 (no third) So you have D with a G7 add on very Rocknroll! this shape 555555 is G this shape 575155 is C7 (no third) Maybe the "Bluesy thang " mentionend ad 2:38 could be these chord shapes: 000000 D 020100 G7 030300 D7 Just my 2 cents. I love what you do. U have a Nice rhytmic phrasing and a wonderfull voice.
GREAT VID, dear. I love this, Im gonna D tune Rrrrright away. BTW. This Chord 000000 is D This Chord 020100 is G7 with D in the bass. (no third) This Chord 555555 is G This Chord 575155 is C7 no third Maybe the bluesy chord mentioned at 2:38 is 040300 or 030300 (D7 no third)? this turnaround is very blusy indeed: 000000 020100 030300 Thx 4 posting. Make folkmusic not war ....
I love u Lola... u have made my dream come true... Love this song and have been wishing I could play it for a long time now... :) Thanks a lot
