Cool video & info on the VR. I bought a VRX-5200R stereo receiver in Feb. 89. Just put a new display backlight lamp in this afternoon(it's only been out for around 18 years) and it is good as new again. This model has bass, midrange, and treble controls which is one reason I liked and bought it. The other reason was that it was on close-out at a Sound World store and I picked it up for a little more than 1/2 price, around $230 if I remember correctly.
@dstryr At some point I would like to find one of the stereo receivers and have a look inside. I've seen pictures of Vector Research receivers owned by others and they really do look impressive inside.
@welldontdothat Howdy, stranger! It looks very comparable, although I'd say the Behringer has a few more knobs to twiddle. This model also has a built in 24-bit digital effects processor and 100 effect presets that actually aren't too bad.
@wattswrite No, that very tiny number one indicates single track play mode. The Index numbers are indicated through two smaller seven-segment display sections next to the track numbers.
@partyfriek There is a set of characters in the display that is used to indicate the current index mark. Presumably, it might indicate the number of index positions present on the disc or in a certain track. When the player is running, look for the smaller number "1" that shows up in the display window.
I think you were telling me about this unit, mainly the A-B repeat. I think my Pioneer DVD player might have that feature, I need to try it for kicks and grins.... :D
i once hade a portabel DVD player with an A-B/ loop button... it was so fun just to hear someone repat sh#t!! or somethine other again and again :) also in my school there was a computer with that tray loading/ejecting ting going one. and because it was the pc we used to play movies on. every time we tryed to loade a disc the tray just kepeed going in and out :D
Nice video like always! clear speak, and very informative 5/5
nice peice of equipment Bill, just a side note I have a 1991 Denon Mini hi-fi system that has an interesting tape-deck arangment, it's horizontal instead of vertical so you load the tapein on a flat bed and it goes in like a CD Tray, just thought I'd share that cuz you don't see many like that around.
Nice c.d player. It looks like it could possably be a sony inside as it has all the things that a sony one of that age would have ( I have a few myself "sonys" with the exact same funcions) but ofcorse i could be rong. Could you tell me if it is a sony or another make ??
@flipflop595 I'm not sure. It was made in Korea, and so far as I know, Sony never had a factory there. Like many other CD players of the time, it is powered by a Sony chipset.
Thats quite a nice CD deck. there are alot of things on it which i have only seen on modern high end pro stuff. Like the index marks.
I recon if you left that thing there for long enough playing like 5seconds on A-B repeat you would wear one part of the laser transport track alot more than the rest.
Dam good find for $8 will piss all over the cheap newer rubbish.
I enjoy your videos but can i ask some advice please..My Amplifier when i turn it on powers up but i dont get any sound for a few minutes then it slowly starts to come in, all crackly to start with but as it warms up the sound gets better but not as good as it used to be before this started happening, do you have any ideas please...Thanks...
@alansdalek Don't post stuff like this as a comment as replies are character limited (500 characters). Your amplifier could have any number of problems: bad capacitors, noisy transistors, even a dirty protection relay or defective speaker fuses. If you've never repaired one before, I don't recommend it as your first project. Start with something easier and work your way up.
@uxwbill cant find a way to send a personal message ..i did look the new youtube layout has messed things up, i have repaired stuff before but have never come across this fault and wondered if you had..
Here in Canada, Visions sells Vector Research subwoofers. Cheap garbage. The main speakers of any decent system would be able to provide more subwoofage than a Vector Not-Enough-Research subwoofer. /rant.
@lenoat702 With some exception, a CD player is a CD player. That said, and if I'm remembering things properly, this unit does have a Burr-Brown DAC in it. Those are considered a premium part.
@uxwbill So just because something is old or has old technology does not mean that it's crap. I mean this unit compared to a $20 dollar Memorex CD player. This unit will outperform the $20 dollar CD player in terms of audio quality.
@lenoat702 There was cheap junk on the market back then, just as there is today. I wouldn't necessarily write off the cheap Memorex CD player--prices for the components have fallen sharply and sometimes even a cheap product can have a very good design. I've even seen cheap players that would read discs more reliably than much more expensive high end units.
The only way to know for sure would be to compare the internals of the two players and listen to them.
@vwestlife The one blue LED is part of a CMoy headphone amplifier built into a mint tin. Its blue LED does not bother me. The other blue LED that you may be able to see is part of a Behringer mixer. It is eye-wateringly bright and is going to be "dealt with" professionally.
you know how to fix dvd players that don't open because the magnet that holds the disc won't let go? is it the belt or what? it works alright if there is a disc in it but the magnet won't let go if there is no disc in it.
@james42519 The most likely cause is a slipping tray drive belt.
Before repairing anything, think and be careful. Do NOT do something you are not ready to do, and always be respectful of electrically operated equipment. Unplug a device before working on it.
@uxwbill i have took more then a few things apart. fixed a few things. took a geneses apart and fixed a solder joint on power jack, took ps2 slim apart and fixed one of the switches that made it think the door wasn't closed. took xbox, ream apart and cleaned them out ect. i took thid vcr/dvd recorder apart and seen the belt looked like was out of shape a little. tried to find another from cdrom drive but this used bigger belt.
@james42519 i boiled the belt that was on this drive. thought what i have to lose really and it seemed to have worked but still sticks sometimes. i can get it to open if i move the gear a little a little when when ti opens. the magnet is just too strong for the belt now ti seems.
@james42519 I encourage almost anyone to repair broken devices as it can be quite educational. I just want you to be sure it is also safe, hence the warnings.
For something like this, which is not speed critical, you can often use an appropriately sized rubber band.
@uxwbill tried it but couldn't find the right size i read online that you can add some duck tape to the magnet and that is enough to make it not stick as strong.not too hard to take the plastic cover off the spindle thing to do it too. not sure if that is the best thing though.
@james42519 You should just get the right belt size, even a belt that's slightly tighter would work. If rubber bands won't do it, there are places online that sell many kinds of belts in many sizes.
Duct tape is not likely to work very well over the long wrong and may cause other, more serious problems.
Do you have any Stereo equipment manufactured by the SCOTT brand? There doesn't seem to be many videos of their components on here, produced after the 60's, that is.
@NovaScotian1992 Yes, I have an HH Scott DA-980 CD player. My parents purchased it brand new in the early 90s, but it no longer works at all. I believe the laser pickup has stopped working.
When I see "Vector Research", it makes me think of "Victor", or "JVC". I think that thing is in better shape than me, being the same age! I got a free dual cassette/CD boombox today which I'll have to make a video of.
I have to wonder if it's possible that Pioneer manufactured that unit in some way. The Play/Pause indicators are very similar, if not identical to the ones on my Pioneer PD-M400 CD changer.
@Fuzy2K I would have my doubts. This unit was made in Korea. As far as I know, Pioneer only operated factories in Japan and Malaysia for the longest time. These days, I think Pioneer still makes their own playback equipment in China, though most of their receivers are produced by Sherwood.
I bought one of there VCR vhs type back in the late 80s when I was in the NAVY . I bought it at a Zarzes store in Charleston SC It help up for many a year up til I was transferred over seas to Scotland and hooked it up to a power converter and it let the majic smoke out . Left it there when I was transferred back to the states. I think it was even stereo
@ncrdisabled It's always fun to hear from someone who owned stuff like this when it was new. I was definitely too young then...thankfully, eBay and thrift stores make it cheap. (It's disappointing, but Curbside Discount isn't really an option, unless people put stuff outside illegally. No electronics are permitted in the trash in Illinois as of Jan 1, 2012. I'll bet it still happens tho.)
From the beginning I was thinking about looping dude looks like a lady. xD Seems like you had the same thought.
