Does anybody recce the beach prior to the aircraft landing? How can the pilot be sure the aircraft wont dig in or sink ? What proceedures are in place to keep ill- informed bystanders getting in the way ? It's a great spectacle, it just raises a few questions that I hope someone can answer to satisfy my curiosity. thankyou.
@24765968 The RAF have forward air controllers who are just like the air traffic guys in an airport tower except they work in the field. It is part of thier job to select the exact landing zone and mark it for the pilots. There will be a crash crew available in peace time should things go wrong and they are responsible for keeping dog walkers and onlookers at a safe distance.
@Flaps50trimsneutral Thanks. Ive been out the RAF too long and started getting some terminology wrong. I know theres a big difference between TAC ATC and FAC. I couldnt remember the correct name when I replied to the original comment. Ive seen a video some where on the work of TAC ATC. I'll maybe hunt on here. Thanks again for correcting me
@24765968 Yeah they would definitely recce the beach. They recce beaches for landingcraft too (depths, sand composition etc) Its the same for Helos and dodgy LS's. In Norway, Helo pilots go in and recce the LS.... imagine its the same here.
Looks like just another nice day at the beach to me. I shudder at the work required to prevent saltwater corrosion in the wheel wells though. Great airplane. I was a C-130 Flight Engineer USAF.
@ktusk15 Indeed, however we found your planes were simply too small and had inadequate range. Which is fine, but you know - second best and all that. So we stretched it, gave it proper engines and air to air refuelling cabilities amongst others. Gave it to the best pilots in the world and Bob's your uncle.
Would the sand's friction/resistance of the wheels cause the plane to slow down quicker after landing, and paradoxically, make it need a longer than usual stretch to achieve V2 for take off?
Simple answer is yes (especially when you see the tide comming in and the water on the surface of the sand), but don't worry Saunton Sands are plenty long enough, even without reducing the normal safety margins incorporated in the calculations for takeoff and landing.
@DmitriRussian It's doing strip prep landing, which is practise for the real thing in the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq more than likely. To think, I've more than likely serviced this Hercules :)
@Flaps50trimsneutral as evidences by the refueling probe mounted above the cockpit, usaf doesn't use hose-drouge refueling, so there would be a receptacle above the cockpit and centered
@parkinglotpedro Yes correct as I said above not USAF. I know because I was flying it.
As for USAF Air to Air Refuelling..I am not aware that the USAF C130s recieve fuel airborne so I don't believe they have the receptical for boom refuelling, someone may be able correct me on this fact. I believe the recieving of fuel for RAF C130s was initially trialled and used for the RAF during the Falklands war.
The USAF C130s do however use hose-drouge refuelling but only in the capacity as the tanker.
@Flaps50trimsneutral i work on USAF c130h and j models every day. ive never seen a refueling boom on any of them. or any type of refueling apparatus for that matter. this plane i believe this plane may be a test plane because it doesnt have any markings on it. if it was us it would have the majcom(AMC, ACC, ect) on the tail. and a tail number
@senojeelnodnarb This is not a test plane, as stated in the description, it is a regular Royal Air Force C130K C3. It does have markings they are just difficult to see, as I stated in the description it is XV299, and it has normal RAF markings (roundles and flashes as well as Royal Air Force written below the cockpit).
The RAF have been using C130Ks for Air to Air Refuelling since the early 1980's, no need for testing, in fact the opposite I'm afraid the aircraft is being phased out.
@Shalashaska016 I fly on USAF 130's as a Loadmaster..... we don't have a big refueling boom, and only some the spec-ops 130's can refuel mid-air, none of the regular "slicks" can. The USAF 130's that can refuel have a port above the cockpit as mentioned below. This is still a cool video though, i can say i've landed on some questionable things, but never a beach.
RAF Operation lets fuck off down the beach! Beer check! Bordies check! Towls Check! Silly hats from the royal gaurd check! Now how the fuck can we get this squadron down there? Well Sir I got the Keys to the C130K!! oh jolly good!

It was a beach; I'm staying at the suanton sands hotel looking down on the beach and when the tide it out the beach is very wide and very long. Other than the beach there is a huge area of sandbanks and two beautiful golf courses. No Tarmac or runways in sight. By they way why is the language of my commentators so poor and aggressive? it cant be on a beach because you can see the runway lights and the signs up on the tarmac, clearly you dont know your stuff, and it might be next to a beach but they dont land on a each, how could a 200 tonne aircraft lsnd and take off on soft sand, retard
@aliarmistead You would be amazed at the versatility of where a c-130 can land. Dirt roads, dry fields, etc...
The "runway lights and signs" you see is placed there by an air operations crew of course. Even in combat situations, if they can help it, they will attempt to sneak in a team prior to the landing and set up IR strobes to mark the landing strip. Its a real cool plane. Its not far fetched at all to see it land on a beach. Beach sand at the water line can be pretty hard.
I don't know what runway lights you see? As Voodoo has said, the orange markings you see are put there by the advanced tactical ATC guys to mark a touchdown point on the beach.
@aliarmistead You are an ignorant person, yes we do land in less than 1000 feet, offload right as we turn around. And get airborne in less than 1200 feet. We do it on sand, we do it on mud, and you just saw them do it on a beach. The talon is an amazing fat aircraft. Btw, I call you ignorant specifically because you don't understand we must train to get it right in the field. So if you see crap on the tarmac it does not mean it is not what they are training for.
@XGCScrappy I worked on these things in the U.S. This guy aliar is pretty retarded. He is saying how heavy the aircraft is. Also the 130 was designed for very short landings and take off and its main landing gear is designed specifically for unimproved landing strips aka no roads.
@aliarmistead I worked on C-130's for 6 years and they were designed from day 1 to land on rough terrain there smart guy. During different years at Red Flag we landed in the desert several times. Also this plane loaded is only around 79,000 kilograms.
@aliarmistead are you stupid?!?!?!?!? c17's (which are heavier) land on sand and dirt just like that, they have things called soft field landings and takeoffs.
@aliarmistead Dude... you see that white building on the cliff at the end? i can see that from my house... i can promise you there is nothing next to that beach but sand dunes and rocks
and for the love of god i hope your a troll... because if not your really. really ignorant
Shit chill out you guys. It's obviously a c-130. All I was saying is when " cod" kids say enemy ac-130 above it's not a c-130 because it's attack and rapes your soul
I was an control pilot for Lockheed Martin for about 15 years, and I remember landing on the most unforgiving ground to prove the durability of the C 130 and the other aircraft the produced.
For those who doubt the location check out the Panoramio photo at the lat and long above on Google Earth titled Saunton Sands Hotel, you will see the hotel in the background on the video at the end of the landing rollout 31secs into video.
Kinda makes ya wonder how many times a SOC bird has landed on a beach droped off or picked up a team then gotten the hell outa dodge .... Just saying is all .
I'm amazed that they didn't sink in the sand. I've flown a Cessna182RG on a wet turf runway and got stuck. Sand changes in texture with every movement of the tide. Great Vid. J R
how much damage would the salt and sand do to the gear? i noticed they took off in some standing water, but that couldn't get all the sand out and it adds a bunch of salt
You know what I hate? when Cod kids say "ENEMY AC-130 ABOVE!" or they just insist it's a AC-130. And when you reply and say it's a C-130 they just call you a fucking retard or something. thats what I hate..
@Izebullet You know what I hate? When dip shits like you tell everyone else the wrong information. A in AC-130 stands for attack and was first incorporated into the C-130's name in 1967 to change it from just being a cargo plane to a plane which had the ability to do damage to the enemy. I don't mean to be an asshole but next time get your facts straight before you tell everyone else.
But will it blend?

and for the love of god i hope your a troll... because if not your really. really ignorant
jamziboy 10 months ago
@aliarmistead Ignorance is not proof of your opinion. Or, as in this case, delusion.
The Hercules plane is specifically designed to be able to land pretty much anywhere.
Serostern 10 months ago
@aliarmistead didn't know a C130 weighed 200 tons, only 50 tons less than a fully loaded Airbus 340...

@aliarmistead
I bet you are part of the CoD generation.
This plane is designed for it. Get a life retard. Stay of the keyboard

I think they're having fun taking off, then landing at the beach
riquelaboissiere 11 months ago
Shit chill out you guys. It's obviously a c-130. All I was saying is when " cod" kids say enemy ac-130 above it's not a c-130 because it's attack and rapes your soul

Wow.

I was an control pilot for Lockheed Martin for about 15 years, and I remember landing on the most unforgiving ground to prove the durability of the C 130 and the other aircraft the produced.

I hope they took it thru the plane wash when they were done.
Barnekkid 1 year ago
Shall I put a stop to the speculation?
It is a Royal Air Force C130K C3.
Tail Number XV299.
The beach is Saunton Sands in Devon, England.
51° 6'48.16"N 4°13'17.41"W
For those who doubt the location check out the Panoramio photo at the lat and long above on Google Earth titled Saunton Sands Hotel, you will see the hotel in the background on the video at the end of the landing rollout 31secs into video.
Hope this helps.

Wait so "some" people think this is an AC-130 and not a C-130?
I can only laugh.
There are many variants but lets take the "Spectre" load out... 2x 20mm Vulcan cannons, 1x 40mm cannon and 1x 105mm howitzer.
So the question remains to the nubs "Can you see any of those weapons sticking out its left side?"
No? thought not, so lets agree now that's its a C-130.
HeeroYuy911 1 year ago
who would have thought that those beasts can land on sand too!??
Chrischn89 1 year ago
wow, I don't understand how they are able to keep from digging into the sand, especially when they are turning around.

@mikesoccer11 C-130 buddy If there were cannons on the side then you could call it an AC-130

MGCairtraffic 1 year ago
@MGCairtraffic just wondering how does that make sense when its an american plane? an american pilot landed it on a carrier ;)
GILLETTEWILDHOCKEY 1 year ago
@GILLETTEWILDHOCKEY I'm pretty sure the C-130 landing on the beach is Brit, we don't have refueling probes on our Herks
MGCairtraffic 1 year ago
it's not a gun ship. It's a refueling probe above the nose.

great aircraft the c 130, 50+ years old and going strong...

Great Vid. J R
jrossi9250 1 year ago
how much damage would the salt and sand do to the gear? i noticed they took off in some standing water, but that couldn't get all the sand out and it adds a bunch of salt

You know what I hate? when Cod kids say "ENEMY AC-130 ABOVE!" or they just insist it's a AC-130. And when you reply and say it's a C-130 they just call you a fucking retard or something. thats what I hate..

trumpet190 1 year ago
@Izebullet Whats even more retarded is people saying its fake lol
cluck2win 1 year ago
@Izebullet You know what I hate? When dip shits like you tell everyone else the wrong information. A in AC-130 stands for attack and was first incorporated into the C-130's name in 1967 to change it from just being a cargo plane to a plane which had the ability to do damage to the enemy. I don't mean to be an asshole but next time get your facts straight before you tell everyone else.
qtrinconnections 1 year ago 3
@qtrinconnections whats wrong with his facts he's stating that cod kids never heard of a C-130 only an AC-130
Tomos17451 1 year ago
@Izebullet
Just kick them in the nuts. Simple.
NuguSmedley 1 year ago
@Izebullet Well there are dozens of variants so it MUST be an AC-130 lol.

@cooldude050 I'd like to see a C-130 go upside down and then bomb the shit out of the taliban
iColorado303 1 year ago
@iColorado303 The C-130 doesn't bomb, I doubt any form of AC-130 bombs either =\
DeadlyInertia 1 year ago
@DeadlyInertia the c-130 does drop MOAB bombs from time to time
MrJp990 1 year ago
@DeadlyInertia The C-130 can "bomb" in the most basic sense. It dropped the "daisy cutter" in Viet Nam and the MOAB in Iraq.
