This is actually the original recording of the song according to the Wiki. Kai Winding recorded it in '63, Irma and the Stones recorded it a year later. I think it's a hoot, personally, to hear a big band player trying to go sideways into pop and R&B.
This totally blew me away. I just assumed that Jagger-Richards wrote it but never thought too much about it because I always disliked the song. Now I see that it was their cover of the song I didn't like because this is fantastic. I tried to read the label to see who composed it and it looks like something like "N. Monde". Does anyone know who wrote it and if this is the first version of the song ever recorded? Thanks
@bradentonguy50 "Time Is on My Side" was written by Jerry Ragovoy under the pseudonym "Norman Meade." He also wrote "Piece of My Heart" which Janis Joplin covered with Big Brother and the Holding Company on "Cheap Thrills."
@bradentonguy50 This was written by Jerry Ragavoy specifically for Kai & is the original. This was released Oct. 1963. In early 1964, Irma recorded it as a B-Side, but needing more lyrics, singer/songwriter Jimmy Norman was hired to fill in the lyrics. Sadly, while The Rolling Stones version credited him as one of the writers, the 90's found his name removed from the credits. Unfortunately he lives in N.Y. & receives next-to-nothing for his contribution, much less his other compositions.
"The Gospelaires sang on hundreds of New York recording sessions in the early and mid-1960s. Their line-up was fluid; at one time or another including Dee Dee Warwick, Dionne Warwick, Cissy Houston, Myrna Smith, Carol Slade, Doris Troy, Judy Clay, Sylvia Shemwell, Estelle Brown, and maybe some others. They subsequently evolved into the Sweet Inspirations."
Totally awesome! I've always liked all of the Kai Winding music I've ever heard (which isn't much) but it's soooo gooood! It's time that some of his classic 60s recordings come out on cd, especially an old album 'Mondo Cane Vol. 2" & a title something like "A Rainy Day"-hope I got those titles right, but this is great to hear these old classics again.
The Drinkard Singers consisted of Cissy & her older siblings. The Gospelaires were Dionne, Dee Dee, Cissy, Judy Clay & I believe Doris Troy. This group became known as the Sweet Inspirations & Cissy was only original member left.
d820m's right 2 an extent. There was overlap between the groups. The Drinkard Singers began long before Dee Dee & Dionne were born. Their mother Lee managed the group & was the sister of the members of the group of both sisters and brothers 1 of whom Emily later took the stage name Cissy Houston. When 1 of the sisters left she was replaced by Judy Guions, Lee's adopted daughter & ultimately Dionne & Dee Dee's sister. She later took the stage name Judy Clay & was also a member of the Gospelaires.
The Gospelaires often performed w/ The Drinkard Singers lending 2 the confusion over who was in which group. Only Cissy Houston (still known as Emily Drinkard @ the time) & Judy Clay (still known as Judy Guions @ the time) were members of both.
The group the Drinkard Singers evolved into -- The Sweet Inspirations -- is still active today. At 1 point early in their history Dionne & Dee Dee were members as was Doris Troy. In 1963 Judy's sister Sylvia Shemwell replaced Doris & Cissy Houston took over from Dionne. Dee Dee became the groups official leader. Dee Dee passed away in 2008, but had left the group in '65 when her solo career started to take off. Cissy left in '69.
Thanks for the info. They had a very unique sound and their voices just jump out on the recordings. Out of all those great singers my favorite was Dee Dee. Great background vocalizing has become a lost art. The Sweet Inspirations, The Andantes, Blossoms, The Cookies etc., Love Patti Labelle & Bluebelles on Wilson Picket's "634-5789 & Gladys Knight & Pips on Carla Thomas' "Comfort Me".

This is NOT the original version, that's Irma Thomas, Kai Winding was the first one to cover it.

@Rotjoch2010 KAI WINDING lo grabo en 1963 e Irma Thomas a comienzo de 1964 , entonces quien lo grabo primero ? pues Kai Winding.

@Rotjoch2010 I'm sorry, you're wrong. Irma Thomas' version, as great as it was, was a cover of Kai Winding's original. Look it up.

Kai Winding (tb); The Gospelaires (Cissy Houston, Dee Dee Warwick, Dionne Warwick) (vcl); Jerry Ragovoy (arr); Garry Sherman (dir).
(63VK603) Time Is On My Side ("N. Meade" - aka Jerry Ragovoy) - 3:05
Note: The vocalists listed above were identified by Jerry Ragavoy to Al Kooper (thanks to Fred Clemens).

Kai Winding's '"Time is on My Side" is tops! It is a classic and Kai's recording is as great as the versions by The Rolling Stones and Irma Thomas.
