You're an idiot to think consistent cardio in the form of running or jogging does not burn fat and calories. It's proven science that it does. The fact that people like you spread this bullshit and nonsense, speaks wonders why so many are confused about how to lose weight.
If you want to lose weight, get off your fat ass and do 30 mins of cardio 5 times a week and eat fruits and vegetables. It's really that fuckin simple douchebag.
People hate running because they never learn to do it the right way. They heelstrike and swing their arms over their chest and thats what causes injuries, not "imbalances". And running definitely increases metabolism after you stop because I usually run 50 or more miles a week and eat 4000 or more calories a day but if I take a week off and continue to eat the same way I don't gain any weight at all.
Update: In five months of running an average of 14 miles a week - which I enjoy. I have lost 6 inches from my abdomen (41 to 35) and 5 inches from my waste (39 to a 34). I have also lost 2 inches form my buttocks (41 to a 39). All of this from just running. I don't care what anyone says - running DOES work and it will make you lose inches the RIGHT way. No gimmicks and diets and fast drops! I love the way I look now and I aint stopping there!
@Gruuten - I don't know Gruuten - what is your target heart rate? You need to identify what that number is and when you do your workouts - target that for maximum results. Everyone's target heart rate is different. My target heart rate is 167 - but when I run it is betweent 160 and 175 depending on the level of intensity.
Natural instinctive activity for humanbeings since the dawn of time. to get the best results u should incorporate both cardio and weight training together with a decent diet for guaranteed results.
Ive never met a fat long distance runner or a fat sprinter so this guy is making a poor observation. 2nd the after burn effect as stated below is a side effect even after running not just weight training.i'll get home after a run and still sweat for hours after the workout.3rd we all need to start somewhere wether it b weight training or running, baby steps first beacuse injury can occur no matter what physical activity u do,yes even sex.if anything I would start with running beacuse its a
I agree with other posters. There are calories which are burned after a workout. In fact depending on the intensity of a workout , running, jogging you can burn off calories afterward. The term for this process is known as afterburn or "excess post-exercise oxygen consumption," or EPOC
@BigMarkusFella - You may hate it - but just start - just jump in there and start! You will become to love it - I know you will - make a difference in your life and then you will have to change your screen name from "BigMarkusFella" to "DamnNicebodyMarkusFella".
I felt the same way when I started back in yesteryear - but I would not trade my body for nothing and I work hard to keep it nice - the looks I get show me my work is paying off. Good Luck!
Continued... I've been doing this now for nearly a year. I look better and my fitness has shot through the roof. Double win. Obviously diet has more control of your fatloss, but cardio definately does play an important part, from my experience. If you're able to run for hours on end, you arent pushing hard enough. I'm exhausted after 10mins and can barely talk. My metabolism is boasted for the remainder of the day and the following day, which is why I only need to do it every 2 days.
@weepaul666 - Agreed! I run a max of 45 minutes at least 3 times a week an sometimes 5 times a week. I like your post. I hope more people read it. I don't know anyone who can run 3-4 hours a day - that is ridiculous. I just moved from 30 minutes to 45 minutes for my running and I am exhausted to hell after my 45 mintues! But I make every dang blasted minute count or otherwise - why do it at all!
Some weak points made by this guy. Who runs for 3-4 hours a day? 45mins maybe at most is the most effective way before you start burning muscle. The higher you get your heart rate up, the longer your metabolism will increase. 45mins is even too long for me. I do sprints 3 days a week (spread out, monday, wednesday, friday), which only lasts 10mins a workout. Sprinting for a minute, then rest 2mins. Repeated 4 times. This takes roughly 10minutes to do. I know have abs, which I never did before
Remember running, like all work outs are what you make them out to be. For running you can run up hills or stairs, trail running in the mountains, strap on a weight vest for more intensity. You can do high intensity interval running, which is the same energy system as weight training[ ATP] , timed running, out and backs, and long slow distance running. You can alternate running with biking or swimming... Its what ever you want it to be. Mix it up for variety and muscle confusion.
If "A Few People Only Enjoy Running" as you said in your video, then why do we see thousands of people running marathons, ultra marathons and triathlon events all the time, and even though these types of athletes are in my opinion way too skinny and have little body fat they are... well skinny and have little body fat...
@Sharkman3472 I think you just helped make one of his points. A very interesting book was written some years ago regarding exercise for your body type. One point in this book was that if you have a body that is straight up n'down ( I forget how the author described it) then running would be the ideal exercise for you! However, if you are curvy, hour glass, big on top or big on bottom, then other exercises are ideal, eg. jumping rope, swimming, walking. Great ideas!
Weight training will make you burn more calories AFTER your done for several hours, yes that is true. With running you burn calories WHILE you are running. Running Combined with weight training burns even more calories. The notion that you cant loose fat from running only is just not true. I have done "Running Only" workouts when I have been injured and I couldn't do strength training, and I dropped 15-20 lbs...So running seems to work just fine at helping with weight loss...Plus running is fun
You are wrong in very many way's first off long term running cause an increased circulation in blood replenishing your organs, including um.. your heart? your thyroid? resistance training is also very excellent for weight loss, which is why expert's tell you to combie cardio with weight training, long runs will make your body function much better, meaning processing caroliers more efficently, strengthening your heart and cicutory system, to run fast and more fluently, so combine the 2
@Sharkman3472 well said, however poorly spelled >_< lol! anyways. If i had to choose just one I would choose running, not jogging, intervels. Running is resistance training for your heart, lung's, circulation system our 3 most important parts of our body, if you want to loose weight, running DIRECTLY stimulates the very muscles responsible for metabolism. yes adding muscle "helps" but a pound of muscle would speed up your metabolic rate by no more than 50-100 calories a day. its all about activi
I had a friend who weighed 220 pounds and she lost ALL that extra weight wth these little pills that make you throw up and you can use them 20 minutes after every meal; tricking your body into thinking you're full, so you don' have to be hungry all day ; you can still eat the junk food you love; and won't gain weight!
I forgot what there called but you can wiki it i guess..
I lost 60 pounds running for 30 minutes a day and lifting weights for 30 minutes after my runs. Of course, I run in the mountains, so I guess you wouldn't understand the real joy you can get from running. Like how I feel when I get to the top of a mountain!
This is fucking stupid. You don't know what you are talking about.
Its not about weight training vs running. Weight training is for building muscle and has great benefits but you will not burn anywhere near the same amount of calories as sprints. This is complete bullshit. Running can be an interval workout, for example what I've been doing is 400m sprints and then doing an interval of walking around the track. Simple. This is total garbage.
"eventually you're going to be running three or four hours a week, and who has time for that?" LOL omg 30 min a day is such a waste of time! I could be sitting on my ass playing wow.... thanks for showing me the light!
so weight lifting is the best way loss weight because you need the cliories tho fuel the muscle and since the muscle needs energy or in other word calories( for those of you who dont know calories is energy mesaured in heat) to recover you actually keep burning calories for hours after you lift weight.the if you gain bigger muscular mass and volume your metabolism will speed up( bigger muscles more fuel required) which means greater fatloss unlike where it has shown that too much cardio is bad
i am 25 n 5'2"tall...come wat ever i try i am nt loosing a kg even..it has bin an year now..i do exercise n diet strictly 4 month than when i c no results i quit n stay off from it for 2 weeks than i realise that i hav to loose than same procedure starts....it has bin an year n am still where i was 82!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you are so fuckin stupid!!!!!!!! running is one of the best ways to lose weight fast!, it gets you in shape, breathe better, feel bettert when they do cardio workouts. i lost 40 pounds in 2 and a half months just on running and dieting. running 4-8 miles a day. so shut the fuck up you dumbass. ALSO you start to enjoy running when you are in shape!!! proven to be true
this is total rubbish. i guarantee that in a test between running against resistance training the runner will always loose more weight. if u want to loose weight just burn more that your taking in, that simple. this guy is trying to sell a fad diet. get out and run and enjoy the results!!
what about running up an incline? set the running machine to go uphill. thats a way you can increase the intensity without increasing time or going faster. I disagree also about the eating issue- people doing weights are just as likely to eat a lot to build up energy for a training session. You can also run 'in all kinds of creative interesting ways' - try running in different places, different conditions, the settings for running are endless. You cant really do weights anywhere apart from a gym.
why do you talk so complicated ..and make weight loss process so confusing ..
here si the thing any kind of cardio even moving ur leg at one place burns some calories so running ,walking is very good not only to loose weight but to feel good about urself so doing something is always better than doing nothing make running effective and interesting by making variations in speed walk .jog run ....and so on .drink lost of water and EAT RAW
@anchaldimri - I agree with you anchaldimri - it is not hard at all. Most "experts" try to make this complicated and it is as simple as adding and subtracting! You said it in a nutshell!
I am afraid that people will see this guys vids and become discouraged and not do anything at all when they originally had the motiviation to do something! I think he is putting out the wrong message!
Thanks for this video! I think most runners run not to lose weight but to maintain weight and also to challenge themselves. While I don't find running necessarily "fun" I do find it hard and very challenging. And challenging myself IS fun. Improving is fun too! Racing is extremely popular as is running marathons. People run marathons for the mental and physical challenge that it provides. True, running/cardio does not equate to weight loss, however, not everyone finds running to be boring.
whatever. just run. the only way to get better at running...... is to just run. people love to come up with easier ways to lose weight, but it doesnt work as well. just run.
@GJJalltheway agreed, running is a great way to lose weight, if you run for a goal other than losing weight. Say you have a 5 K coming up and you want to train to get to that distance, then you in turn lose weight. I for one want to run a marathon, started training a month ago and have lost 12 lbs so far, just make your goal something other than to lose weight and you will keep it off, make a personal goal.
@GJJalltheway In my weightloss/fitness efforts, I began a regimen that included running b/c I felt walking was no longer enough of a challenge. However, repeatedly I had problems flare up with painful inflammation of the knee and was told by my doctor to chose another exercise, take advil etc. It was disappointing for me b/c I enjoyed that "runner's high". Anyway, I have come to accept the frame of my body is not built for running. (a lil bit knock knee'd). So, I appreciate the alternatives.

@GJJalltheway - I agree with you! I am surprised this guy is telling people that running is a bad thing! It is not a bad thing and it WORKS! The fat WILL come off and I am proof! I run a minimum of 7 miles a week to as many of 14 miles. I enjoy it and it makes me feel good and my body looks fantastic!
Just ignore the gimmicks and all the fast weight loss advice - get out there and run! You will see results if you run consistently and make each run count! Track it yourself! It Works!
I cannot agree enough with everything you said. One year ago I was in the best shape of my life. I could have done step-aerobics for 4 hours, but when it came to running I couldn't get half a mile without my MP3 player. I HATE RUNNING! I get dancer's high but when I finish running, I just feel like crap and thinking that I'll never loose weight. Cardiovascular endurance is just as vital as muscle, but I strongly suggest aerobics. It doesn't put as much strain on your joints or mid-section.
Running is very good for weight loss. Bruce Lee did it to lose weight, and so did many great atheletes. By the way, after 20 minutes HIT on the treadmill, your metabolism is kept raised for hours.
I agree that running is not a magic bullet. Running at the right intensity, and length along with not eating less but eating smarter, and weight training will be your best bet to live a fit, and healthy life. I could run five miles a day everyday for a year and overeat fast food and junk food everyday, and gain weight. The reason is my body would adjust to 5 miles day like we all adjust. To do some major weight lose damage, you must continue to challenge your body, and eat smarter.
@niceguy999918 Agreed, yes you could run 5mile a day, overeat and gain weight. It is as simple as calories in vs calories out. As for your body "adjusts" to running therefor burns less calories? Rubbish. As you lose weight you will burn less calories, the formula is you burn 1 calorie for every kg of body weight you move 1kilometre.
Sick of people saying your body "adjusts" to cardio and it stops becoming effective re: calorie burn
I don't know where you get your research stating that cardio does not keep your metabolism boosted after it is stopped while lifting weights, if done the right way, will keep the metabolism boosted for days at a time. I have personally lost 60 pounds in 4 months with just running, pull ups, push ups, and sit ups. A very strict diet on low fat, and high amounts of fruits and vegetables too. I do agree that you must be in shape to run. I started out walking, then jogging, sprinting, then running.
If you want a great resource that sums up all the research on fat loss I highly recommend Alwyn Cosgrove's Fat Loss University - The Science Of Fat Loss. In that he summarizes all the research that shows how long slow cardio does much less to raise your metabolism long term compared to metabolic resistance training.
That said, that is just a general rule and doesn't apply to every situation. In your case, running clearly has worked well (great job, btw!)
However, most people aren't as lucky as you and their body simply does not respond with a large amount of weight loss from running.
Also, if you cut out your resistance training, do you think you would have seen the same results? Is it possible that the majority of your results came from that training rather than the running?
Maybe not, but it's worth considering.
Also, I highly disagree that low fat diets are the way to go for most people, but again it obviously worked for you!
@losefatatwork - I am sorry - I disagree with you. I think it is wrong that you tell people that running is not good and does not work. It works - I assure you it works. If you run consistently and make each run count - you will see those pounds fall off. I run a lot of miles each week because I love it! Running is not for everyone - but it does work! Some may read your post and get discouraged all together. I think you are doing more harm than good! Not everyone likes to go to the gym!
I will check it out. Thanks for the info. You have great points but I had to put in my two cents because I personally have benefited from running. I highly agree that lifting weights promotes fat loss because more muscle means more calories expenditure. Thanks Mate! I lost the weight because I wanted to be fit. Fitter not fatter! Running now has becomed a passion but I do agree its not for everybody. Thanks for posting useful this useful video.
@lexcorona85 - So have I, Lexcorona! Running is great and it works! I don't understand why this guy is telling people running is not good! It works and if you make each run count and do it consistently - you will see those pounds fall off and stay off! I run a minimum of 7 miles a week up to about 14 miles! I love it!
I disagree. A great way to lose weight and burn fat is the walk/sprint method, if your clint is unable to run because of knee issue simply raises the incline would the answer.
I love using the walk/sprint interval training protocol, which is very effective for weight loss.
However, I prefer not to use running as modality to do it. With running, you are doing thousands of reps, which eventually is going to cause an injury. Why not do fewer reps of a more demanding exercise and get the same benefits?
If I can do just a few burpees or kettlebell swings and get the same effect without the injury risk, why should I use running?
Wow..no cardio necessary eh? How are your clients improving their heart and lung capacity, which is the scientifically proven best way to reduce chances of heart disease?
Great question. To help my clients simultaneously improve their aerobic capacity while also losing fat and gaining muscle, I use a system of training that I call metabolic resistance training.
Essentially what we do is use supersets, giant sets and circuit training so that we move quickly from exercise to exercise without resting much, if at all.
This way, my clients are actively exercising and keeping their heart rate up for the entire session.
Actually, if you are overweight, running on a treadmill is not a good option I do agree, however cardio is still the choice to burn off calories. Overweight people should be working out on an elliptical machine instead. The elliptical machine simulates running and takes the pressure off the joints and ligaments thereby reducing the chance of injury.
The problem I have with the elliptical machine is that it also does half of the work for you. You can go on that thing for hours and really not achieve much.
With my personal training clients, I never put them on traditional cardio machines. Instead, we do metabolic resistance training and just have a very intense workout.
And I get great results with everyone using this method, along with NO injuries.
From everything I've seen and read, I just don't believe cardio is necessary.
I doubt that you have seen any modern elliptical machine at the gym lately, most now include bars to work the upper body as well as the lower body, giving you a full body workout and helps you burn more calories. Also resistance training makes a person GAIN weight, not lose weight because muscle weighs more than fat. Cardio makes a person lean, resistance training makes a person beefy. Therein lies the difference here.
Well considering I train people at the gym all the time, I'm pretty familiar with elliptical machines.
Doing resistance training with weights does not make you gain or lose weight. It simply creates a change in your body. Whether that change is gaining or losing weight depends on the type of workout you're doing and your nutrition program as well.
To say a blanket statement like " cardio makes a person lean and resistance training makes them beefy" is misleading and untrue.
running is bad to start out tru a fast pace walk until u get your heart ready take it to a treadmill to run it isnt as bad on your back set the height to 15% turn speed up to 6 and run for 30 seconds jump off for 10 catch your breathe and go back on for 30 seconds also running is a good weight loss but study up on it first its to build leg muscles instead of weight loss, running takes years of running to lose the amount of weight u want to lose....
im a female and im scared to go any wehre near the weight room because thats were all the men go to get bigger. so wouldnt i get bigger and not lose weight if i went in there?
You're not alone in worrying that, but I can reassure you that as a female, working out with weights will NOT make you big and bulky!
Women have a totally different hormonal makeup and so you won't be able to bulk up even if you try.
All of the magazine cover models and swimsuit models that you see in magazines work out with weights - it's been proven to be the #1 way to build a sexy body, whether you're a woman or a man.
Just give it a try and i promise you you won't regret it!
runing is a good way to get in shape, specialy if you can't afford to use a gym or get a personal trainer. Running and walking are the easiest and most cost efficient way of losing weight and staying fit...its sorta what we're naturaly made to do anyway lol.
You make some great points, and I definitely agree that walking is the most cost efficient and natural way of burning calories and improving your health.
Running, though is good for some people but not for others. The problem with it is that even though it can help you improve your fitness, the risk of injury and the time commitment required mean that it's just not a good option for most people.
I've only recently received my personal trainer's credentials (through WITS) but I've never prescribed running to my clients. If they're in relatively good shape, I might recommend HIIT but not for extended periods. I keep them working the muscles for health and not running mile after mile. Many people don't seem to realize that 100 calories burned is 100 calories burned, whether you used them up by walking, circuit training, swimming, or running.
Secondly, you're right on the money. Another thing they fail to realize is that it takes ALOT quicker to burn those calories with weight training than with running due to the effect of EPOC.
Having said that, some people do really well with running and lose a lot of weight that way. If they enjoy it and are biomechanically sound, they're welcome to do it. But those people are the exceptions, not the rule. Running is just not right for most people, period.
Firstly, congrats on your amazing achievement - I certainly never broke any records when i was in school :)
Secondly, by the way you describe yourself, it sounds like you're naturally very good at running and so it's likely that your body responds well to it because that what it's built to do. However, most people are not like you...most of the rest of us suck at running and our bodies are not built for it!
There are plenty of easier ways to lose fat for most people.
one question for you losefatwork, i am not really a fitness junkie and quite frankly i find it hard to push myself to get into the gym and workout!!! i absolutely hate running because it is just sooooo boring so i usually do weight lifting, i do 4 times a week for about 30-35 min. Is that enough excercise to boost my metabolism considerably or am i looking for higher amounts of working out to achieve this??
Great question! The answer to it is hard to give without knowing exactly what you are doing for your workout plan.
At a superficial glance, 4 sessions of 30 mins a week should be more than enough, but it depends on the efficiency of the workouts that you're doing, your nutritional habits and what kind of shape you're currently in.
If you want me to have a look over these details and give you an in-depth answer I'd be more than happy to. Shoot me a private message!
well right now i'm in decent shape, i'm 6,0 190! i usually do running for about 3-5 miles but lately it's been getting boring and it takes long! right now i'm training my upper body for the majority of time with weight training, i'm usually benching, bicep curls, triceps, shoulders and abs. I try to alternate from working out the chest and then working out my back, i usually do it one day on one day off so i always have a day to rest my muscles
Well, it definitely sounds like you're in pretty good shape!
A couple things I would recommend:
1) Start working out your lower body just as much, if not more, than your upper body. Lower body is where most of your strength and size comes from and can make a huge difference to both your physique and athletic performance.
2) Make sure you are doing plenty of rows to balance out all your benching - they'll also give your biceps a great workout
I weigh 290, I hate to lift weights, but love to run (weird I know). I'm going to run regardless if it's not as effective as weight training, because that's what will get me out of bed at 5am. That is all that matters, that you do SOMETHING. Do what you love, and keep doing it. Unfortunately though, diet is about 80% of the effort. Exercise alone, will not get the job done.
Your post is excellent & 100% on the money. The reasons I give above only apply to the general population who hate running but do it anyway because they think it is the miracle cure for weight loss, which it isn't.
However, if you love doing it and it's the only exercise you get, then I agree with you that it's an excellent and completely worthwhile endeavor.
Rather than being married to a particular dogma, everyone should do what works for them and what keeps them motivated and passionate!
You are completely right!!!! I was about 270Pounds myself 2 years ago.... When I started my Diet, I started to run.... my Ankles and Knees did hurt really after that and I had to stop any sports for about 2Month... really pissed my ass off...
So I started Bodybuilding and was lucky, that I had a good trainer who told me almost the same.... right now I am 180LBS, have low Bodyfat and only train 4 workouts a week to keep my metabolism at 3400 Calories without getting weight... so you are..RIGHT
Your story sounds amazing and VERY inspiring...what a transformation! It can be extremely frustrating to get injured and have to stop your workout plans in the middle, but it's great to hear that your will and determination didn't stop you from achieving your goals.
What kind of workouts do you do now? Thanks again for sharing your amazing story.
In the beginning I did tooo much Cardio .... (Already told about the damaged ankles in the beginning). Then it was 4x a Fullbodyworkout. Had to stop a 2nd Time after Reaching the final weight because Skin operation in he Stomach (Bodylift) lost 100Pounds in 6 Month so my Lower Stomach Skin was "damaged?". after 6 month recovery now I'm doint a Split in the Gym and getting back my lost condition and muscles. can give you a Foto and my actual Foodplan, would e nice if you would look over.
Absolutely! I would be more than glad to help you out in any way I can. Shoot me private message with your email address and I'll be more than happy to look over your food plan and help you write a good training program.
First of all it is absolutely untrue that your metabolism shoots back down after running. In this respect, running is just as effective as weighlifting. Also the reason that you shouldn't run because "its boring and hard" is a terrible attitude. You need to put your body under some stress if you want it to respond. Theres just no way around it.
Vinny, thanks so much for your comment! Great points.
While it may be true that there is no distinction simply between running and weight lifting, I was talking about a specific kind of running vs a specific kind of lifting - namely: long, slow runs vs high intensity interval weight training.
When it comes to those 2 forms of exercise, research has shown that lifting keeps your metabolism boosted for days afterwards whereas with running your metabolism slows right after you're done.
Also, when it comes to running, I'm just reflecting an attitude that most people feel. Not trying to bring any negativity to the party!
Personally, I've found that most people feel that resistance training is just so much more fun and helps them enjoy putting their body under stress, rather than making them hate every minute of it (like running).
Compliance is the #1 key to exercise, so you always want to go with the activity that is the most fun to do.
look i know u know alot about this stuff, but i see you as single minded. i agree with most of the stuff that you are actually saying. however, once ur heart is at an iregular or exercising heart rate for more then 20 minutes, you start burning fat. im prettyy sure that is correct, so a 30 minnute run, is great if your in shape correct? thanks for the vid.
Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate the input :-)
As regards running, you are correct that you do indeed burn fat, _while_ you are running. But the minute you stop running you stop burning fat.
For pure fat loss, where you're trying to get lean as easily as possible, it's much more efficient to use short, targeted resistance wokouts that keep your metabolism up for days afterwards, even once you stop exercising. They take less time, are more effective, and keep working for longer!
I'm on a weight loss journey and never enjoyed running until I began. As long as I have my ipod it is not boring at all. Especially because I employ interval training where I alternate between running, jogging, and power-walking, all within the span of about 35 minutes per workout. The treadmill has done wonders for my weight loss, and I would recommend it to anyone, because it is just as customizable of a work out as weight training (which I also do - but in less quantities than running)
Your reply brings up a very good point that I forgot to mention in this video - and that's the fact that if you enjoy running and it's helping you get in shape without getting you injured then by all means, keep at it! It's important to do what works for you.
My points were directed at people who hate running but do it because they think it will make them thin. Bad idea!
Also, you seem to really know what you're doing with the interval style training - but most people don't :-)
The fact that people hate running makes me love it even more.

I think the best way to lose weight is probably high intensity cardio like spin class, but I think running is still pretty good.

2nd the after burn effect as stated below is a side effect even after running not just weight training.i'll get home after a run and still sweat for hours after the workout.3rd we all need to start somewhere wether it b weight training or running, baby steps first beacuse injury can occur no matter what physical activity u do,yes even sex.if anything I would start with running beacuse its a
brewmaster714 8 months ago
I agree with other posters. There are calories which are burned after a workout. In fact depending on the intensity of a workout , running, jogging you can burn off calories afterward. The term for this process is known as afterburn or "excess post-exercise oxygen consumption," or EPOC

My metabolism is boasted for the remainder of the day and the following day, which is why I only need to do it every 2 days.
weepaul666 1 year ago
@weepaul666 - Agreed! I run a max of 45 minutes at least 3 times a week an sometimes 5 times a week. I like your post. I hope more people read it. I don't know anyone who can run 3-4 hours a day - that is ridiculous. I just moved from 30 minutes to 45 minutes for my running and I am exhausted to hell after my 45 mintues! But I make every dang blasted minute count or otherwise - why do it at all!
gene1536 10 months ago

Sharkman3472 1 year ago
@Sharkman3472 I think you just helped make one of his points. A very interesting book was written some years ago regarding exercise for your body type. One point in this book was that if you have a body that is straight up n'down ( I forget how the author described it) then running would be the ideal exercise for you! However, if you are curvy, hour glass, big on top or big on bottom, then other exercises are ideal, eg. jumping rope, swimming, walking. Great ideas!
MsFruitbasket 10 months ago
Weight training will make you burn more calories AFTER your done for several hours, yes that is true. With running you burn calories WHILE you are running. Running Combined with weight training burns even more calories. The notion that you cant loose fat from running only is just not true. I have done "Running Only" workouts when I have been injured and I couldn't do strength training, and I dropped 15-20 lbs...So running seems to work just fine at helping with weight loss...Plus running is fun
Sharkman3472 1 year ago

Simple. This is total garbage.

so weight lifting is the best way loss weight because you need the cliories tho fuel the muscle and since the muscle needs energy or in other word calories( for those of you who dont know calories is energy mesaured in heat) to recover you actually keep burning calories for hours after you lift weight.the if you gain bigger muscular mass and volume your metabolism will speed up( bigger muscles more fuel required) which means greater fatloss unlike where it has shown that too much cardio is bad

bloommusic 1 year ago
what about running up an incline? set the running machine to go uphill. thats a way you can increase the intensity without increasing time or going faster. I disagree also about the eating issue- people doing weights are just as likely to eat a lot to build up energy for a training session. You can also run 'in all kinds of creative interesting ways' - try running in different places, different conditions, the settings for running are endless. You cant really do weights anywhere apart from a gym.

If you run long distances and eat 5 small meals a day with little processed sugar, you will lose alot of weight. Both you need both.
MrWakethesheeple 1 year ago
Thanks for this video! I think most runners run not to lose weight but to maintain weight and also to challenge themselves. While I don't find running necessarily "fun" I do find it hard and very challenging. And challenging myself IS fun. Improving is fun too! Racing is extremely popular as is running marathons. People run marathons for the mental and physical challenge that it provides. True, running/cardio does not equate to weight loss, however, not everyone finds running to be boring.
Rdcoaxum 1 year ago
whatever. just run. the only way to get better at running...... is to just run. people love to come up with easier ways to lose weight, but it doesnt work as well. just run.
GJJalltheway 2 years ago 16
@GJJalltheway agreed, running is a great way to lose weight, if you run for a goal other than losing weight. Say you have a 5 K coming up and you want to train to get to that distance, then you in turn lose weight. I for one want to run a marathon, started training a month ago and have lost 12 lbs so far, just make your goal something other than to lose weight and you will keep it off, make a personal goal.
dolphinsfan1966 1 year ago
@GJJalltheway In my weightloss/fitness efforts, I began a regimen that included running b/c I felt walking was no longer enough of a challenge. However, repeatedly I had problems flare up with painful inflammation of the knee and was told by my doctor to chose another exercise, take advil etc. It was disappointing for me b/c I enjoyed that "runner's high". Anyway, I have come to accept the frame of my body is not built for running. (a lil bit knock knee'd). So, I appreciate the alternatives.

I run for an hour and 20 minutes at 11kph burrning 1200 calories. It certainly works.

To do some major weight lose damage, you must continue to challenge your body, and eat smarter.
niceguy999918 2 years ago
@niceguy999918 Agreed, yes you could run 5mile a day, overeat and gain weight. It is as simple as calories in vs calories out. As for your body "adjusts" to running therefor burns less calories? Rubbish. As you lose weight you will burn less calories, the formula is you burn 1 calorie for every kg of body weight you move 1kilometre.
Sick of people saying your body "adjusts" to cardio and it stops becoming effective re: calorie burn
vandam2711 2 years ago
I don't know where you get your research stating that cardio does not keep your metabolism boosted after it is stopped while lifting weights, if done the right way, will keep the metabolism boosted for days at a time. I have personally lost 60 pounds in 4 months with just running, pull ups, push ups, and sit ups. A very strict diet on low fat, and high amounts of fruits and vegetables too. I do agree that you must be in shape to run. I started out walking, then jogging, sprinting, then running.
lexcorona85 2 years ago 5
Hey and thanks for the great comment!
In your case, running clearly has worked well (great job, btw!)
losefatatwork 2 years ago
However, most people aren't as lucky as you and their body simply does not respond with a large amount of weight loss from running.
Also, if you cut out your resistance training, do you think you would have seen the same results? Is it possible that the majority of your results came from that training rather than the running?
Maybe not, but it's worth considering.
Also, I highly disagree that low fat diets are the way to go for most people, but again it obviously worked for you!
losefatatwork 2 years ago
@losefatatwork - I am sorry - I disagree with you. I think it is wrong that you tell people that running is not good and does not work. It works - I assure you it works. Some may read your post and get discouraged all together. I think you are doing more harm than good! Not everyone likes to go to the gym!
gene1536 10 months ago
I will check it out. Thanks for the info. You have great points but I had to put in my two cents because I personally have benefited from running. I disagree. A great way to lose weight and burn fat is the walk/sprint method, if your clint is unable to run because of knee issue simply raises the incline would the answer.
hardactinman 2 years ago
Thanks for the insightful comment!
I love using the walk/sprint interval training protocol, which is very effective for weight loss.
However, I prefer not to use running as modality to do it. With running, you are doing thousands of reps, which eventually is going to cause an injury. Why not do fewer reps of a more demanding exercise and get the same benefits?
If I can do just a few burpees or kettlebell swings and get the same effect without the injury risk, why should I use running?
losefatatwork 2 years ago
Wow..no cardio necessary eh? How are your clients improving their heart and lung capacity, which is the scientifically proven best way to reduce chances of heart disease?
doodiethief 2 years ago
Hi and thanks for the comment!
This way, my clients are actively exercising and keeping their heart rate up for the entire session.
losefatatwork 2 years ago
Actually, if you are overweight, running on a treadmill is not a good option I do agree, however cardio is still the choice to burn off calories. Overweight people should be working out on an elliptical machine instead. The elliptical machine simulates running and takes the pressure off the joints and ligaments thereby reducing the chance of injury.
TheTick900 2 years ago
The problem I have with the elliptical machine is that it also does half of the work for you. You can go on that thing for hours and really not achieve much.
With my personal training clients, I never put them on traditional cardio machines. Instead, we do metabolic resistance training and just have a very intense workout.
And I get great results with everyone using this method, along with NO injuries.
From everything I've seen and read, I just don't believe cardio is necessary.
losefatatwork 2 years ago
I doubt that you have seen any modern elliptical machine at the gym lately, most now include bars to work the upper body as well as the lower body, giving you a full body workout and helps you burn more calories. Also resistance training makes a person GAIN weight, not lose weight because muscle weighs more than fat. Cardio makes a person lean, resistance training makes a person beefy. Therein lies the difference here.
TheTick900 2 years ago
Well considering I train people at the gym all the time, I'm pretty familiar with elliptical machines.
Doing resistance training with weights does not make you gain or lose weight. It simply creates a change in your body. Whether that change is gaining or losing weight depends on the type of workout you're doing and your nutrition program as well.
To say a blanket statement like " cardio makes a person lean and resistance training makes them beefy" is misleading and untrue.

running is bad to start out tru a fast pace walk until u get your heart ready take it to a treadmill to run it isnt as bad on your back set the height to 15% turn speed up to 6 and run for 30 seconds jump off for 10 catch your breathe and go back on for 30 seconds also running is a good weight loss but study up on it first its to build leg muscles instead of weight loss, running takes years of running to lose the amount of weight u want to lose....

purpledragon613 2 years ago
Hi!
Just give it a try and i promise you you won't regret it!
losefatatwork 2 years ago
runing is a good way to get in shape, specialy if you can't afford to use a gym or get a personal trainer. Running and walking are the easiest and most cost efficient way of losing weight and staying fit...its sorta what we're naturaly made to do anyway lol.
TheHellBound666 2 years ago
Hi and thanks for your comment!
Resistance exercise is much better.
losefatatwork 2 years ago
I've only recently received my personal trainer's credentials (through WITS) but I've never prescribed running to my clients. If they're in relatively good shape, I might recommend HIIT but not for extended periods. I keep them working the muscles for health and not running mile after mile. Many people don't seem to realize that 100 calories burned is 100 calories burned, whether you used them up by walking, circuit training, swimming, or running.
temprise 2 years ago
Firstly, congrats on the new cert!

Is that enough excercise to boost my metabolism considerably or am i looking for higher amounts of working out to achieve this??
nickloks 2 years ago
Hey nick,
Great question!
Shoot me a private message!
losefatatwork 2 years ago
well right now i'm in decent shape, i'm 6,0 190! i usually do running for about 3-5 miles but lately it's been getting boring and it takes long! right now i'm training my upper body for the majority of time with weight training, i'm usually benching, bicep curls, triceps, shoulders and abs. I try to alternate from working out the chest and then working out my back, i usually do it one day on one day off so i always have a day to rest my muscles
nickloks 2 years ago
Well, it definitely sounds like you're in pretty good shape!
A couple things I would recommend:
1) Start working out your lower body just as much, if not more, than your upper body. Lower body is where most of your strength and size comes from and can make a huge difference to both your physique and athletic performance.
2) Make sure you are doing plenty of rows to balance out all your benching - they'll also give your biceps a great workout
losefatatwork 2 years ago
I weigh 290, I hate to lift weights, but love to run (weird I know). I'm going to run regardless if it's not as effective as weight training, because that's what will get me out of bed at 5am. That is all that matters, that you do SOMETHING. Do what you love, and keep doing it. Unfortunately though, diet is about 80% of the effort. Exercise alone, will not get the job done.
Linkman81 2 years ago
Your post is excellent & 100% on the money. The reasons I give above only apply to the general population who hate running but do it anyway because they think it is the miracle cure for weight loss, which it isn't.
However, if you love doing it and it's the only exercise you get, then I agree with you that it's an excellent and completely worthwhile endeavor.
Rather than being married to a particular dogma, everyone should do what works for them and what keeps them motivated and passionate!
