Huge Cat fan, but like everyone else never seen footage of him that young. Wonder how he explained the "Puffy Shirt" to his Muslim friends ?? HAHA JK They've all seen Seinfeld...
NOT ONE OF HIS MOST SUCCESSFUL OF SONGS. REMEMBER HIM PERFORMING THIS ON "TOP OF THE POPS" BUT WASNT WEARING THE SMART SUIT THAT HE WAS WEARING IN THAT CLIP. HE WORE A VERY COLOURFUL FLOOR LENGTH KAFTAN! WONDER IF ANYONE OTHER CAT STEVENS REMEMBERS THAT OCCASION?
A huge ' Pirate Radio ' hit from the Summer of ' 67, remember it so well , plugged to death on Radio London's ' Fab Forty ' at the same time as ' Excerpt From A Teenage Opera '.I remember my newly installed Bluespot car radio , bought for my 17th birthday, in my 1938 Austin Seven , volume turned flat out travelling back from Bletchley Park training courses .Happy memories from the ' Summer Of Love ' !
dont get me wrong here, cat's been such an influence on me for over 40 yrs , i love him. i just dont understand some of the choices he's made, i h ave listened to every reason but there are flaws in them, and if he finds justification in his choices, who are we to say different. they are his to decide ,it's his life, we can only decide what we wish for our lives, he is doing the same for his.
@Bombeni You don't know what good music is all about!!!! Unless u grew up listening to the Cat then u have nothin' much to say. This early Cat stuff us somewhat new to me, not all of it but this one is, nevver heard it before & I love the unique difference within this song, it's unlike anyone else from this era in r&r...this is what classic rock is all about. I know the later Cat much better as the early stuff wasn't played here in Vancouver Cda, Keep this gem posted & Thankyou chum!
I am pretty sure he's not feeling any kind of confort with that suit.. he's THE CAT... am sure he had to put on that suit because of the show requirement was mandatory, he's THE CAT he likes a t-shirt and blue jeans... ahhhh? now I read above... the show is german!! ah that's the reason.. hahaahahaha
You have realised that this was shot back around 1967, which is probably a long time before you were born? Things were very different then. Cat Stevens, despite what he turned into, was then a very cool Mod guy.
hes always been a performer, i still wonder what changed him from this to that. i do love his music (saw him in concert at 12), however i do wonder why he chooses a woman that stands behind him instead of beside him. is that the performer wishing to take the stage or the husband that wishes to dominate his woman. how can u have those beliefs yet pick one that ultimately puts women as less, to stand behind. i dont get it.

Many of you misunderstand.....he wasn't Muslim when he wrote all this great music. As a matter of fact, he gave up music for almost 20 years because of this peaceful religion. Hopefully he will rediscover his Christian faith before he expires.
Oh the memories !, a Pirate Radio London hit from the summer of ' 67, shortly before the demise, remember listening to this on the ' Fab Forty ' , where it was plugged to death, on my brand new car radio in my 1938 Austin Seven , whilst travelling to and from Bletchley Park on Post Office training courses !.
I aint suprised he gave up on these orchestral re-workings of his guitar penned songs..Completly over-whelming him at times..Here its always more about the arrangement than the song..Cat with a guitar is where its at!
@C0NTR4B455 After he nearly died of tuberculosis in 1969, he started to get more introspective and split from his original record label so he could do more of the folk-oriented music he wanted to do. Definitely a change for the better.
Poor Cat - he hadn't quite found his way yet when he did this lip-sync performance. It's something you'd expect to see at a Las Vegas. But there was great stuff to come......!
@brooklyn3178 There is NO complete concert of Cat stevenson Beat Club..he played 4 songs in total that were aired on different nights...3 of the 4 are posted on your tube,.
I think when he got TB , it made his voice so much better I guess it was a blessing...and I can not stand beards, but he is the only man I have ever seen that looked better with a beard, not that he is not handsome without one he has nothing to hide by a beard,,,,,I have done a couple of portraits of him, since I am an artist it was very easy...
I agree. But I think he disagrees. He put his religion first for 29 years - no albums from 1978 until 2007. So sad we lost all of what he could have done for three decades.
why can't people understand that footage was when yusuf was quite new to islam and wasn't experienced enough about islam to be put on the spot. You see the thing is muslims love God and the prophet Mohd. dearly so when someone insults them we hate it.yusuf was expressing how much he hated rushdie's book-it's like someone saying"i'ii kill you if you break that cup"-it doesn't mean they're actually gonna kill them!
You should be aware that Cat / Yusuf supports terrorism.. Cat betrayed the world when he performed at HAMAS fund-raisers (disguised as Islamic Charities - money traced to Al Qaida) ,

Just check Wikipedia.- its quite accurate...You have got your information from the wrong source! Anyone who has ever met him or knows him can tell you....this man is good and promotes peace, love etc. A true child of late 1940s/1950s relatively peaceful England. Also influenced by John Lennon, the Kennedy brothers, Bob Dylan/Joan Baez , etc.peace movement. Misunderstood!!
If you just take the time to read his answer to this accusation, you will see that he was in a tight corner, and just quoted the official "Koran" answer...not his...it was a case of your damned if you do, and your damned if you don't. I don't have any religion by the way, though believe in the soul and higher being (i.e. God/the boss/the keeper of the life force,or whatever your own beliefs would call it.
Just to reaffirm my reply to you. Best Wishes...but he was definately put in a corner. He has only ever meant any financial donations for humanitarian purposes. Perhaps this will become clearer to you and others who still distrust him in the course of time. I hope so! I think I have said what I believe. I met this man when he was an 18 year old boy. He was a deeply emotional gentle good kid. I have never stopped loving him. End of story. Love and Peace to you.
Hm, well, if you say so...all I can say in my neighborhood, mid to late 1960s in urban Washington, D.C,, you'd better NOT have dressed like that! As I suggested, the only people in the squirrelly Victorian age dress were the Beau Brummels, the Moody Blues, and other English bands, and I'd wager that once offstage, they preferred turtleneck and jeans. This, in fact would have been a better look for Cat. I imagine back then just starting out, you copy the successful people!
wow, the first 40 seconds or so sound like the beginning of a great song...with the horns and all....kinda gets too trippy after that......but hey....thats cat for ya!!
His early songs were to me hit and miss and this is a miss to me. The chorus is rather weak and the song average. Also Mike Hurst overproduced his music which is why Cat left him. After his illness, Cat's song went to another level and he dropped the Top 40 pop style and became a much better songwriter and singer.

You should be aware that Cat / Yusuf supports terrorism.. Cat betrayed the world when he performed at HAMAS fund-raisers (disguised as Islamic Charities - money traced to Al Qaida) ,
Cat openly and on-film agreed with Iran's "fatwa" by to kill an author of a book, (Salman Rushdie), and Yusuf has donated tens of thousands of his own cash to HAMAS charities ( the money traced to weapons ). This is even more betraying , because Cat previously wrote "Peace Train" ! (B4 he converted )
