This is real, those Apple chargers have a tiny circuit board in that part. If it shorted than it could get extremely hot.

Never happened to me even if I was on 3G, I was recharging, I had 2 apps opened (Safari, Infinity Blade) and I was Infinity blade.

Iphone 4 is best :3 (got it :D)

It's called thermal runaway. All Lithium or Lithium Ion batteries pose this risk if overheated. Lithium batteries are used in almost all types of modern portable electronics like phones, computers, PDAs, etc.

@kdes That's not the same thing , of course it overheat a litle bit , i mean , the iPhone GPS app is a verry good GPS and it takes lots of batery , that doesent mean your iphone or iphones sucks , and it doesen't mean it going to take fire or not working ! :))

Alrite, I purchased an Iphone 3G about a year and a half ago. Last night before I went to sleep I put my Iphone on the charger like I do every night, no different. I woke up this morning, grabbed for my phone and just about burned my hand. It was really hot. The charger was obviously melted and my phone is fried! Oh, and i could have burned alive last night.Very upset!! Like loosing a part of me. haha, Now im gnna cry myself to sleep tonight. lol!! Definitely gnna try and get a new iphone.

I've heard of this happening with Ipod Nano models of certain generation as well. I don't much like lithium ion batteries, and am quite wary of them even though I have one in my pocket and one on my lap at almost all times.
