Yeah, usually honest people go to court with just their honesty and since it's the truth, they win the court. But lawyers are clever liars who only get paid if their lies make them win the court. So the most expensive lawyers are the most cleverest, who come up with the most successful lies that will win.

The reason he paid them off in 1993 was because he didn't want have to go through a long drawn out trial to prove his innocence. He did in 2004 and look what happened, it destroyed his public image completely despite being found NOT GUILTY.
