Simply Amazing song. These musicians are so talented, but what blows me away is how in sync they were and how much they apparently enjoyed performing together. Bravo !!!!
I have been looking for a video of them playing "Just Before the News" Anyone know it? It is a short song, less than 2 minutes but a perfect demonstration of how the group jams. It is incredible
I grew up in Seattle. I attended a Boy Scout camp on the Oregon Coast when I was 15, and learned this song the first time. For some reason, when traveling through Oregon, especially on the coast, that's where I associate this song with.
this is a true classic! Talk about aging myself lol. This is one of those tunes that is hard to resist and seems to just get better as time goes on :-)
Hard to believe that this was played on "Top 40" radio back in the day. A song like this would, sadly, never find its way onto the airwaves today. Thanks so much for this!
Jill Hoke, Perry Durkee and myself did an amazing version of this song in 1977. I wish I had a copy of our version. This song is so beautiful. Thanks to sunnychopper82 for putting it up here. It just made my Friday :)
What a beautiful song to listen to in the car as you pass by the nature just outside your car! Better yet, go camping in the wilderness, and play this around the campfire! If you live in the city, let it transport you to the river of learning that teaches you about the human soul! A masterpiece! Love and Peace, BobbyK
I used to sing this song with a friend of mine who lost her life to muscular dystrophy, thank you for bringing back the good memories of her and I listening to this wonderful music...love and miss ya sandra, but I know you are no longer suffering my friend...as for me I hold onto the memories
I grew up listening to my family sing this at weddings. It always touched me deeply to hear their voices raised in harmony to sing such beautiful words. Thanks for sharing this and bringing back some great memories! I love Loggins & Messina
Opening lyrics are perfect for Valentine s Day . If youve been thinking youre all that youve got then dont feel alone any more. When were together then weve got a lot , cos Iam the river and you are the shore .....
This song is just so amazing! Always loved this song!! Takes me back to better days. This song takes me back to days of true happiness and innocence. I miss those days. My heart just aches for those days so much. What a time that was! Never to be forgotten! There was a magic in the air back then that you just cant feel today and that is a real shame. This song is pure magic in itself!! Missing those days but hold the memories in my heart forever!! ☺♥
This was one of two songs that I insisted the band learn for our wedding. 'Wake the Bard' from the Lake Arrowhead area, Calif. did a fine rendition of this...It sounded nice on the hammered dulcimer. The other one was 'What a Wonderful World. 'Wake the Bard' MADE our wedding!
nash was with the hollies in the day , crosby and ethridge - the Byrds - ethridge later on joined flying burrito brothers and then steve stills mannas - best poco LP - hands down - poco 2nd album featuring you 'better think twice ' - just check out how they do the cut Nobody's Fool/El Tonto de Nadie, Regresa - prime .
Loggins and Messina were so great together! They wrote many beautiful songs. I don't know why they broke up. Loggins went on with his career, but I don't remember hearing much about Messina after that. I know he came from an earlier group, but cannot remember the name. Can anyone out there help me to remember this?
@keaster55 - Jim Messina was with Buffalo Springfield from '66 thru '68, then with Poco from '68 thru '90, and during '71 thru '76 he was also with Loggins and Messina. All great groups. Very impressive!
@violetjm Thanks for letting me know. I loved Buffalo Springfield, but could only remember Steven Stills from that group. Liked Poco song Going to a Hoedown. I'm glad he didn't fade into obscurity after Loggins went solo.
@keaster55 - Search "Poco - Follow Your Dreams" to see Jim Messina singing lead with Poco. Also, in the comments section, there's a lot of Poco history. As for Buffalo Springfield, I remember Neil Young and Stills, but didn't know until recently that Messina was ever with them. Now I'll keep an eye out for him. If you check out "Follow Your Dreams," watch the looks between Messina and the mandolin player (Randy Meissner?) The joy of music shows in their faces.
@violetjm Thanks for the info! I didn't even know Neil Young was in Buffalo Springfield. I only really listened to the one song, For What It's Worth. Had it on a 45 rpm single. I'll be sure to check out Follow Your Dreams. Peace!
A shame that more people don't know about Loggins and Messina - long before Kenny Loggins did his power pop stuff from the 1980's he and Jimmy Messina were offering some really, really beautiful music. This is one of the finest examples ...
I'm 14 now but when I was a kid we lived right by a river in Washington. It was so beautiful. My parents always used to play Loggins and Messina. This song makes me think of my childhood :] And House at Pooh's Corner of course.
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing these guys in concert more years ago than i'd care to admit. It was fresh and new and very, very good. But they only had a hours worth of material to play. It was over too soon. But,the memory is quite fresh when stirred.
Like man, do you know "Free Bird"? I get so sick of that crap. Nothin against the Brothers but L&M were the best group of their time. Great musicianship, great lyrics. They were in a class all their own,
Nemafann, she should've taken your suggestion. It would have been a beautiful song of celebration of a loved one's life. Make sure somebody plays it for remembrance of you at your rebirth. Love.
bpd, I wish she would have picked this, but she didn't think it was appropriate. I also wanted The Long and Winding Road because my dad loved that song.
As I am Buddhist I have to have some things done at my funeral, but I told my husband I want this played at some point. Cheers
My daughter and I went to their concert last week in Durham N.C. and we both had tears in our eyes. Her very first concert was Kenny Loggins back in the late seventies with me when she was about twelve years old. These guys play straight to your heart. They had one of the best bands ever.
I've been looking for this song for a long time. It's used in a montage of Fox films in the previews right before Mrs. Doubtfire. And it would always make me cry as a kid. Fantastic song. Amazing.
You know something Sunny, I think you just built the perfect video!! I've seen other good L&M videos, but they show Loggins and Messina as they currently are. They look like dried prunes. (I'm sure I do as well!) Full Sail was the first vinyl disk I ever bought! You've put clever video clips in, without over doing them. And the river scenes are super nice. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us!!
After Danny's and Pooh Corner...........this became my all-time favorite Loggins and Messina song.................same simplicity, but written 20 years later in a more complex period. Full Sail had a much more relaxed feel that most of the stuff in this era for them.
This song reminds me of my all too short marriage. With love to my estranged wife-Diane. It was my immaturity that was our downfall. She was wonderful. Love, Jim
now this song makes me high as well you know and my parrot loves it he sits on my shoulder and chirps and really wants me to dance and sing (feathered prozac) well he has good taste and L/M still rock
Robert DEL Tredeci where are you? (holly) from the Almost Bridges of Madison County .......... still in Clw Fla this is our River Song....4 ever cant you just feel the bubbling twrling water and look into the pools of 1979
They did this song on one of the late night shows (Midnight Special, etc) as a tribute to the late Jim Croce. Can't hear this now without thinking of him.
