I was hired by Eddie Kirkland back in 2003 for a summer tour he was doing. Playing with him was a great experience. I had always suspected he would be touring and playing until the very end...and indeed, he did. It was great knowing you Eddie. RIP.
Always either in his car on the way to & from a gig, or playing the gig. If he hadn't left this world on the road, he'd of left it on-stage. RIP Mr Kirkland
His last stage dive was a 70 mph greyhound buss , that "he survived by the way" died later in the hospital . many many stories about Eddie will emerge as time realizes what a legend had to do to get a gig RIP the Gypsy of the blues
'So Well Stated; also re: His Endurance / Toughness: He wore a scarf over his head which became his trademark but it also covered a metal plate that was in his head from an old war wound
jesus...guy looks like he could kick ass in a bar fight too...I thought he fell off the stage, but the mofo jumped!!about 5 feet down by the looks..and didnt miss a note..gives us all hope for our old age..lol.
Mr. Eddie Kirkland is about 80, and he can turn it out on a variety of other instruments, including mandolin and harmonica. He's also a wonderful supportive and encouraging gentleman.
the best eddie kirkland lp by far is It's THe Blues Man--it'sessential blues listening --much better than the music on this clip. However, the guy that said he's better than B.B. King is either going deaf or hasn't heard much BB King==bill c.
kirkland has more soul, wildness, passion, more funk and more creativity than bb king. also he lives the blues. he used to drive himself to his gigs in his old dusty car with ga plates. he ran away from home at 12 and palyed the blues ever since. he rocks out the stage at 80 years old!! king plays from his rich ivory tower. yeah he's polished and yeah he plays great, but give me some passion and excitement. GIVE ME EDDIE KIRKLAND!!!
In all fairness, their styles are completely different. I think probably what that brother was appreciating is the rawness of Mr. Kirkland's approach. I guarantee you, though, that B.B. has the utmost respect for Eddie Kirkland as an artist and as a contributor to the tradition. Be well. Peace!
eddie kirkland should be more famous than bb king. kirkland could give king guitar lessons. eddie kirkland rocks the house every time. see him live if you have to roadtrip it, i am telling you.
ahh man this is great. Being from Detroit I saw Eddie alot.also a great bluesman from detroit is Eddie burns--check him out.. thanks this is too cool.Get the cd "Motor city blues" Eddie does a few jams on it from 72 ann arbor blues fest--great stuff.
Eddie is the real deal. Saw him at the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival, and was absolutely blown away - along with every other soul who could jam the place, standing room only. Try to find a musician half his age who pours as much passion into a performance. If you get the chance to see him live, don't pass it up!
