the thing about the m16a1 in the day is when is was adapted into service, the army being cheap and all went with a cheaper, more dirty powder causing the rifle to gunk up. when stoner designed it, he had a more expensive, but more refined powder in mind causing a cleaner, more consistent and reliable rifle. does anyone know what powder is being used today in our 5.56 rounds?
It depends on the round. M193 is usually WC 844 or CMR 170. M855 and M856 are WC 844. M995 is WCR845. Yada yada yada...
Manufacturers can even change powders or blends if they need too, as long as they meet velocity specs for projectile weight.
WC 844 is the most commonly used though.
From my understanding you have to get WC844 as surplus. It's almost identical (if not the same thing) as H335. Other suitable substitutes include WC846, and AA223/ AA223C.
The M193 is the standard 55gr FMJ ball round , and the M855 is the 62gr FMJ w/ steel penetrator (it's not AP per se , though it will go through mild steel).
all the pistin version does is limit the amount of carbon that gets back into the camber..... well if you in the desert sand / dirt can get into the camber causeing malfunctions, most malfuctions aren not from carbon, Its a expensive and dumb fix to a non exsisting problem.............
When I was in the Marine Corps we never had a problem with our weapons jamming. Just because todays generation of soldiers live in a lazy society where cleaning the weapon becomes a chore doesn't mean that there's a problem with the M16 gas inpingement system. The piston system is the answer to a non existant problem.
maybe you have never been in a long gun battle for it to happen to you.And one more thing about the gas system is that would heat up the weapon to the point that the rounds go off with out you pulling the trigger, it has happened. If we had switched to the piston system all the problems would be minimal and you wouldnt need to clean the weapon often.
the biggest mistake in this construction, is that gas from gas port reach the place where are all mechanisms, it caused that must be offen complicate cleaned, and all parts are hot after firing. After fixed this big disadvantage, it become, good assault rifle....... hk416:D
Eugene Stoner knew of the gas piston system but went with the DI instead. Kalishnikov )designer of the AK47) called Euger Stoner a genius. The AK47 is piston driven so why do you thing Kalishnikov called Stoner a genius? So what makes you such an expert?
nope. modern ar 15s cannot be trimmed to becom full auto. they are desinged from the ground up to be semi auto. back then, they just pt a pin in the rifle as to not allow the selector switch to rotate to the full auto position. but not aymore.
The AR-15 is still capable of being made fully automatic but takes a few parts. You are correct that the old AR-15 was just missing the sear pin. Now it is missing the sear pin and the bolt carrier is shaped differently so that even if the sear pin were installed, the sear would not be tripped by the bolt carrier returning forward. Additionally, the hammer of today's AR-15s lack the notch required to engage in full auto.If you use the auto hammer, bolt carrier and sear you can make it full auto.
The AR-15 NEVER contained "a pin to not allow the selector to rotate to full auto". That is not how they made them semi-auto only. They REMOVED the sear pin, they didn't ADD a pin.
You know this video shows something really interesting. If you know your AR15 very well.. this video clearly points out the which part you to modify (trim) order to make it a FULL AUTO rifle (since most civilian AR are semi auto) BUT keep in mind that's strictly illegal!!!
I know this was awhile ago but I want to let you know something. I think you're seeing that if you simply trim the disconnect from the semi-auto versions then the hammer won't be caught and will function in Full-Auto. That's incorrect. The purpose for the auto sear is TIMING. If you simply trim the disconnect then the hammer will ride the bolt instead of HITTING the bolt. Most of the time, this will simply result in not firing but, sometimes, a round will fire out of battery is is a bad thing.
There is a BIG difference between the M-16 my old man carried in Nam and the M16A2 weapon I carried in Iraq. The common denominator is to keep that weapon clean and it will get the job done. I know, I own a civilian A2 and M-4. My next preferred weapon is my L1A1 FAL clone.
i can hear the soldiers.. "My cock is not in the right position sir!"

Pretty cool video. I was in the US Army and had one of these (well, actually an M4, but the same thing), but I never knew EXACTLY how tit worked.

Firing 200 rounds, only stopping to reload, will cause the gas tube to explode. In combat this rifle can turn into a bolt-action
Just thought i had to say that

and thus dirtying the chamber and causing a jam! I thinks its time to change to piston, dont you think?
