what does Steve know about Death Metal?.. nothing im guessing.. He looks like a douche bag to me.. hes band sucks the ball hard.. not from a metal point of view.. in general they suck imo
I have to say I'm with steven on this one. Many years ago it was acceptable to have 'serious' metal... but c'mon, it's 2012 now... it has outdated a lot! This whole european satanic shit is so silly (bands like immortal, enslaved, behemoth etc still do it for the kids so they don't have to work in tescos). I was and always will be a metalhead, but as far as metal is concerned let's just keep it deliberatly silly (goregrind etc). steven's always thinking outside the boxes. 'Bad news' :D
or just because its not this or its not that it cant be considered this type of metal that type of metal ...i mean its not the only genre of music that gets dumbasses like that ruining somthing beautiful ...all over somthing that really truely doesnt matter its only a label...
honestly ...im against the whole genre labeling of bands anyway..because hes right its too cliched you label yourself as a deth metal band and you automatically have to be a satanist...you automattically have this image of cradle of filthe pop into your head ...and i mean...thats rather limiting to a band in a creative standpoint to people in a listeners standpoint and people in general its like i see most metal heads being douches if somthing isnt brutal enough for them.....
I'd love to kick Steven in the crotch. I'm into death metal, I don't like certain steriotypical things about it, but I don't make a fucking documentary about it. Fucking asshole snob.
@biffen89 Fucking idiot this Wilson... and to think I've enjoyed his music. Understand: Metal is a Wayward Son from progressive rock! Swords&Chains themes are brothers with the initial development of metal! Even Death Metal bands are charged full of humour, even at the start, just listen to Autopsy, for crying out loud. Absolutely no need to be uptight, judgemental and generalize. Idiot trendies!
@squidge0000 Indeed. And Michael isn't much better either. He plays in Opeth and Bloodbath, yet he seems to patronize his fans because most of them are metalheads.
@RE8978RETURN I don't think it's snobbery. A lot of death metal album artwork is very clichéd and uninspired. Trying too hard to be dark and evil can come off as a bit silly.
@cultofdagon But there are still death metal album artwork which are trying to deviate from that clichéd norm. An example is Nile (one of my favorite bands) which doesn't show so much dark images in the cover, although the music itself is dark and brutal. Same goes for Dying Fetus (mostly political in nature), Decapitated (symbolic), and Gojira (usu. environmentalism) just to name a few. Steve's remarks are misleading. And I am a huge death metal fan, so I know what I'm talking about!
What you said is true, and it happens in music in general. People are starting to get tired of some clichés.
I started to get into the whole Metal scene recently and one of the things that annoy me the most is that i see the same motifs and themes over and over and over again. Metal covers, in general are, as Wilson said, absolutely tasteless.
Just look at the "In Waves" cover (Trivium). Now that's a decent album cover.
@sonicadv27 True, but what I meant is that Wilson's points imply that almost all metal covers are "absolutely tasteless". He doesn't say it explicitly but that's what he meant. You have already mentioned Trivium's album (which I just checked.) As you go through more metal album covers, you will notice some very interesting artwork. There are of course some famous metal bands that keep recycling boring artwork like candies (which is really annoying) but we can't generalize from that trend.
@cultofdagon But I still agree with you that there are still some (but not all) death metal albums that still use uninspiring artwork. Please note that I didn't say Steve is making a false claim; I just say that it's misleading...
Alright everyone's gonna bash me for this... I don't like Steven Wilson. I love Porcupine Tree but I don't like Steven as a guy. He just seems so uptight and snooty. He looks like it in this video. I saw Porcupine Tree a couple years ago and he barely talked to the crowd at all, and he just had this "I'm better than all of you" look on his face all the time. I dunno. Somebody has to agree with me lol.
@lasoogneypubes Personally, I know he's not like that. He loves his fans very dearly, I noticed that when I met him. The music is very complex, sometimes they need to focus very much on what they're doing or planning to do on stage. I mean, I look pissed off when I'm playing guitar, people always tell me. Doesn't mean I'm not nice. At the Grace for Drowning tour, Steven Wilson didn't say a word to the crowd, I think. But I know they were trying very hard to keep their focus on the music.
@magpie1862 Yeah I was surprised too, the previous times I'd seen SW in concert, with Blackfield and PT, they did take time to talk between songs. But I know SW wanted this Grace for Drowning show to be a "visually spectacular" show, to let the music and images do all the talking. To be honest, it did surpass my past concert experiences with PT and Blackfield. This was even better than a regular PT show.
@lasoogneypubes I can somehow see where you are coming from though, if I step out of my shoes for a bit. On Insurgentes, Steven does criticise lots of things in music or how people choose to experience music nowadays, almost like he's preaching. But in the right groups of music fans, he has reached that level of status where many people will respect him for it. After all, everyone's entitled to an opinion, also Steven. But it's not cos I'm a fan or you are, that we have to agree with him.
@lasoogneypubes i think you've got that wrong. I used to think the same thing, until I realized- the man is not a dick. Just socially awkward. He's probably not really all that arrogant, even though it may seem so, he's just really introverted.
@lasoogneypubes He was most likely in a bad mood that day, whenever he's in a bad mood on stage you can tell because he becomes incredibly awkward.
On the other hand, I saw him on his recent solo tour and after the concert he sat on the edge of the stage talking to fans and answering question for an hour and a half.
All musicians have their off nights, you most likely caught him on one of those.
Well I put it like this. Everyone has the right to an opinion, but no one worth arguing with will say that Bud Light is a beer of higher quality than, say, Dogfish Head Burton Baton, for example. You might enjoy Bud Light more, but you're incorrect when you say it's a beer of higher quality. It's fine if someone likes watered down beer/music, they can listen to it as much as their heart desires, but I'll take my beer/music complex, deep, unique, and well balanced.
He's also in bloodbath, if your assuming katatonia isn't heavy enough and he used have pretty kick ass death metal voice. He's has a damn good right to talk about metal
"Hi I don't know anything about anyone".. Renkse plays in bloodbath too ^^ Check them out.. And katatonia have alot of heavy songs fyi. He probably knows alot more than you do, so I guess he have all the right to talk about metal ^^ My question is: What do you know about "metal"?
@333plus333 Fair enough, didn't know he was in Bloodbath. He probably does know a lot more about metal than me, it's just that everything I've heard from Katatonia sounds like Coldplay and I was trying to make a joke about it. Don't get upset.

hypocrisy!!! the pot calling the kettle black!! 1) most of wilson’s songs and lyrics are LAMELY stereotypical and cliched in their “progressive” pretentiousness and preachiness. 2) for starters, Akerfag could have chosen NOT TO pose with the lame arch enemy singer (with a sword!), thus disgracing his holy self. 3) ok, renkse is fair enough, he just states the fact that the other 2 try to make a big deal of while taking "holier than thou" attitude. pffft.
@EITrollo I respect your opinion... the only people who would probably agree with what's being said in this video are people who are and will be fans regardless... it's perhaps harsh from Mikael to just state 'there's not many good metal bands'... It's still a matter of taste really, Opeth and SW's music are probably what's best for us, but it's shit for so many other people. I guess many fans and the artists themselves consider prog to be at a higher level of music and intelligence... I dunno
@EITrollo I guess they're right about the cliché though, but so many bands are also amazingly good at what they would call cliché metal. A band that springs to mind when talking about cliché of hard rock and metal is Airbourne. They're rock & roll to the point it seems silly, but then again, they're so fucking good at what they do. So I don't mind. I think it's a bit offensive of Mikael/Steven, considering both these men are on Roadrunner, a label with many of these 'cliché' rock/metal groups.
@EITrollo Well I think much of what you said can be argued.
1) Yes to an extent, it depends on what you mean though. Is it pretentious? Yes, is it normal prog lyric fare? No not really, it has Wilson's own style to it
2) Akerfag? Really? That's just a pointless immature quip just hurt you on making any point. Also, four words: Pressure from record label.
3) Ya Akerfeldt and Wilson do take a rather holier than thou stance, but remember that Akerfeldt has been in the metal world for 20 years now.
@Nubnut 1) ok, fair enough. i'm just saying he's not the most original lyricist to begin with. he does have his own style though.
2) meh, i don't think mike is someone who can be pressured by anyone, especially after spending 20 years in metal. but if he was pressured and he eventually gave in, he just loses the right to credibly criticize those who did the same thing he did.
3) true. but wilson has not been in metal for so long, and he forgets average prog is as trite as mediocre metal.

This is completely unrelated to the interview, but I wish Jonas wouldn't dye his hair black. It makes his eyebrows look too light.

@merikuna24 Seriously, buy it. You won't regret it. It's so well done in every aspect.
PorcupineFloyd68 9 months ago
Straight from the man's mouth. There's not many good metal bands. Right on Mikael.
PorcupineFloyd68 9 months ago
@PorcupineFloyd68 To me, there's only few really good bands/artists (sometimes none) in any music style: metal, rock, pop, blues, jazz, r&b.
andrelias 9 months ago
@andrelias Agreed. Also, it's pretty funny Mikael makes fun of being forced to pose with a sword when he's wearing that shirt....
