  • I got real sick last year and couldn't breathe. They were going to intubate me and I was terrified. Luckily they were able to find a treatment to get me breathing again after 5 hours. I had fluid on my lungs and my bronchial airway was almost completely closed. I have no idea how it happened but it was beyond frightening.

  • You can't intubate a conscious person, he had to be sedated

  • @Ped102 well u can try but the patient wont be that happy :D

  • @Ped102 yes they can. I was and I actually freaked the nurse out when I spoke.

  • is this patient alive or is he a Cadaver?

  • Stupid question I know, but How long can one be without manual ventilation while setting up the ET tube?

  • If adequately pre-oxygenated (breathing 100% oxygen through the mask seen on the bed in the video), about 8 minutes in a 70kg adult before the oxygen sats drop.

  • I know a maximum of 3 minutes,If 'm right.Above 3 minutes,there is the danger of the brain damage.But I'm not a doctor,so please correct me if I know it wrong.

  • he's alive, hes a nice pink colour! :)

  • you posted this along time ago but i was just gonna say they woudlnt care to be mindful about the teeth or lip damage if the person was dead

  • @Saber5 alive i think but unconscious i guess..

  • @Saber5 hes probably under anesthesia

  • I gag every time I see this but I can't stop watching

  • it is possible to intubate a conscious person...i have done it.

  • when do u need to intubate a conscious person?

    in which cases?

  • when do u need to intubate a conscious person?

in which cases? Many different types of cases. Most are characterized by a concern for loss of airway once induction (loss of consciousness) occurs. There is usually a concurrent concern for the possibility of a difficult direct laryngoscopy. Examples Obese people, people with altered neck and facial anatomy, people who can not open their mouth wide. Many times these people will be intubated with fiber-optics. I hope this helps

  • yes thats helped.. thanx

  • also in severe COPD, CHF, Pneumonia, head injury causing low gcs and insufficient breathing. You can try CPAP first, but in some cases they're going to be intubated later in the treatment, so get it done now and lessen the suffering.

  • It is possible to intubate a concious pt, with the FULL ET procedure. Ive seen it done in the field.

  • Oh God I was intubated 3 months ago. I can't remember if i was awake or unconscious. All I know is when they extubated me I nearly punched the doctor in the face. That shit hurts because you are awake when they remove it. SlushPile do you have problems swallowing? 3 months later I still have problems swallowing.

  • also used during laparoscopic procedures, where gas pressure increases risk of regurgitation and possible aspiration ;-)

  • ok ppl i got 2 questions

when and why intubation is used?

can ppl talk if they are conscious?

  • intubation is used during surgeries where you are sedated and anesthetized. They breath for you through the tube. Emergency docs and Paramedics intubate people who are in respiratory and\or cardiac arrest, or when a patient has a breathing disorder in which they can not support breathing on their own without assistance.

The tube actually passes through your vocal chords so you can make some noises, but not talk.

  • thanks for ur reply.. does it hurt?

what do u mean by ppl who cant support breathing on their own? is it like when someone is suffocating cuz of something?

  • the patient in unconscious :)

  • It irritates your vocal chords. And it will leave you with a hell of a sore throat. You will use a ET tube on anyone who can not breath on their own. Everyone who is healthy is able to breath on their own with or without thinking about it.

  • thanks for ur reply

  • I don't remember being intubated but I coughed up some blood and my throat hurt badly. It's still sensitive 2 years on

  • Intubation is used to secure a patients airway when they require ventilatory assistance when they are unconcious (e.g. surgery or trauma). You cannot intubate a concious patient (well you can, rapid sequence intubation) but because the tube passes thru the vocal cords its not possible to speak.

  • so it is possible to intubate a person when they r conscious?

  • No, it's not possible. The patient has to be unconcious and sedated.

  • thanks for ur reply

  • yes it is possible to intubate a concious patient using topical airway anesthesia with localanesthetics [usually needed for difficult airways]

  • nasal intubation is done while the patient is awake

  • With RSI the patient becomes unconscious. You can intubate a fully alert and oriented patient (I've done it multiple times) with a nasotracheal tube or if they do not have an intact gag reflex. It's just easier to tube an unconscious person though.

  • Yes...paramedics can intubate too...remember: if the patient vomits, turn the patient toward your partner.

  • Lol that is true!

  • This was helpful - and has revealed to me why I've got a laceration on my lip (after surgery 2 days ago).

  • yes it's really good ,better than what doctors explained to us in the hospital

  • Interesting. I always find that I have to stand back to see. And don't forget about rt's!

  • and paramedics. cheers!

  • very nice....upload more such videos....it'll help a lot of med students..and new interns....
