Great review, but this game scared me away at Spiel '09 with all its bits and how fiddly it looked, and I'm still intimidated. I would love to have someone teach me the game though.
I played Shipyard once at BGG.con, at 5 in the morning, and have been wanting to try it again ever since. I think my reaction matches Tom's pretty closely - I was pretty impressed by the game. It is kind of complicated compared to some of the recent stuff, but to me that's a good thing - too many "mediocre euros" have come out lately, and I was looking for another deep-ish game. Maybe Shipyard will be that for me! I look forward to playing it again.
So... I played this at Essen and it was pretty painful. You're building ships and sending them out into the harbor *yawn*. The mechanics are so theme based that if you can't get into the story line then yeah... pretty painful. Anyhow I'm always looking forward to your reviews. Thanks loads.
"Because safety is important." Tom, you are hilarious.

It's not good when the review starts with "They're usually known for making good games, BUT..."

Every person i've teached this game have said that this would be very complicated, but in the end it's quite a simple game to learn.
