@brendanraymond Nope. Technically they classify it as "Modern Sport TaeKwonDo". They charge an average of 300 a month, and will tell you never to visualize an opponent (let alone doing self defense drills). They also forget your name about a week after you leave....after four years. Anyway I left Kostner's school (Sun Prairie, WI) for an actual combat oriented school and have been satisfied. KA is a themed daycare, nothing more.
@Legion719 hit the nail on the head there man... I have been quite satisfied with full contact kyokushin... it may be a little extreme, but when you are young and fit, its an advantage. Mind you not all of the techniques would be practical on the street but it works wonders for conditioning and core strength which is a plus to have on the street.
@brendanraymond I do Hapkido with some Bussey Combatives flavoring. The problem for me is they come into a community and convince everyone they teach martial arts, then I try getting people into my school (at about a sixth of the cost) and they assume something is wrong with my school. They have also convinced people that MA is strictly for kids, if there's a way to damage a demographic with MA marketing in a more detrimental way I'd be shocked to find it.
@Legion719 I wouldn't worry too much. If possible students are fooled by such insignificant and silly marketing ploys from the mc dojos, then chances are, they wouldn't really take it seriously anyway. The ideal student is the one that seeks the information and so they find you... it shouldn't be the other way around where you need to come up with marketing strategies... It was never designed to be a business, but a family and community service. Mind you, its been like this since the 70s...
