OMFG! an english person who recognizes why spanish teams are so good! its simple, look for space and dominate possession. not smash the ball upfield like 99% of english teams do.
Barcelona adapts the third rule A LOT! Especially with Messi, he actually does this one the other side of the pitch; attacking! He brings the defender to him, opens up the space for a teammate and then he proceeds to send a through pass. This is brilliant!
@HeroeOfPhartia For a defender he's fast. A pacey striker in a race to the ball would demolish him though. Long balls would kill barca if teams would keep fast strikers up with their defense.
@colonelsanta he can keep up w/ ronaldo. i think thats fast enough. jesus navas plays on the wing and by the way abidal plays, which is deeper into a more traditional left back position, he can manage the rocket- heeled navas.

With two fast wingers and a skillful, fast, or very tall and strong striker, with the addition of a good attacking midfielder, the 4-2-3-1 is the best...to me of course.
Fantastic video! But I disagree on one point - 1:36. This is the difference between British and North American football versus more technical and tactical sides in Spain and Italy. The former creates enough space so the wingback can operate while the latter emphasizes team play (2 vs 1 and unpredictability).
I've played DM for 10+ years and this is how I operate, as do many deep-lying playmakers (Alonso, Pizzaro etc). The purpose of a defensive midfielder in possession is support.
@IsMiseAdhamh patrick viera, claude makalele? i think they were who they were thinking, but, ur absolutely right, Franz Beckenbauer, mertesacker just to name a few

I personally think when you play with 2 "screening" aka Defensive midfielders and then a number 10 ahead of them is more efficient.

This is a really good tactic because it is more of a team play role. Positioning is very important when keeping the ball.
