  • I like the 1979 line up. Their sound changed with time due to the changes.

  • Saw the Dan twice in Aussie - 07 & 11. Unfortunately no Michael Mac. Still absolutely awesome.

They have lost nothing musically over the years. Mellowed like a great wine.

    Keith rocks.

  • I can't believe what I have run across on you tube. This is the music I played in the 70's. And what memories it has brought back are tremendous!

  • that ending is quite Zappalicious....

  • this dude is good hope to see more of him

  • like these tiny harmonic twist with Mc Donalds melody twist. woooow!

  • 28 people only did it once

  • awful, just awful

  • Mike McDonald, the best soul singer the Dan never had.... they lost him to the Doobies because they never really appreciated just how good he was... like the horn section or Steve Gadd on drums.... I appreciate the genius of Fagen / Becker but heh, did they ever really aunderstand what was in their hands.... I wonder.

  • @Spartanm333 Obviously not, or they never would have let him go. But they did us a favour or we never would have heard some of the best songs come out of Michael Mcdonald and the Doobie Brothers.

  • I always thought of Dan as primarily Fagen and Becker running the show and hiring the musicians, prominent or not so prominent, to achieve what they were looking for in the studio. Dan had major players on their albums that never were part of the "band" since for most of their long existence Dan never, ever toured. Bernard Purdie, Jeff Pocaro, Steve Gadd, Tom Scott, Larry Carlton, Rick Derringer, Patti Austin, Jeff Baxter, Luther Vandross, ect..how could you even try to make a band out of this?

  • @Spartanm333 I think they did eventually, cuz they toured with him later (I saw them in Phoenix) and it sure seemed like they appreciated him then. Maybe not at the time, though. If they didn't, as it seemed, it was their loss. Now I gotta hear Peg.

  • awsome guitar work, love the drums ,there music can definetly stand the test of time

  • aws love itome guitar work

  • I thought Donald Fagen did all the main key work on the Steely albums.

  • Is that Kenny Rogers on the Keyboards?

  • @TheLuddie If you really don't know, I'll let you in. That's Michael McDonald (listed in the title). He did a ton of session stuff with Steely Dan before joining the Doobie Brothers. Short of speed metal and rap, McDonald can sing whatever he wants & it will sound good. He could make "pop goes the weasel" sound cool. He should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (at the very least) as a contributor.

  • ,,do you think he could kick "The Captain's" ass ? {Captain & Tennille}

  • @johnduncan77 - yes dude you are right on the money - Mike is a friend of mine but way before that I fell in love with his voice.... when he toured in Dan the 1st time, Don would just shut the f@*k up because Mike was so far ahead on the vocal front it was embarrasing. Of course Mike's hero was Marvin and so all that close harmony stuff on Peg was not necessarily Don's idea.... Gaye had been doing that for a while and Mike had the range to emulate it. Not bad for a white guy from St Louis

  • Is that Kenny Rodgers on the Keyboards?

  • Sloppy? What are you listening to?

  • pretty sloppy

  • @getyaboogieon who the fuck are you???? sloppy

  • Hey that's the guy from Whale Wars singing..

  • mike mc donald has soul

  • Kick-ass drum solo!

  • Steely Dan always reminds me of family picnics with my mom and her brothers at grandma's house. Good times.

  • @kingcherub ...must have been some coooooool picnics! Cheers to your family

  • Since Fagen's on the Rhodes, why don't they just put McDonald on a Wurlitzer like in old days? I know, no one cares. :(

  • Like the 13th chord in the vocals, and the modulations....and Jon Herrington....Elliot Randall would be proud.

  • Like the 13th chord in the vocals, and the modulations....and Jon Herrington....Elliot Randall would be proud.

  • 23 people don't like repeat performances and didn't want to do it again.

  • The backup singers are SO HOT!

  • @polar19511948

    Oh yeah..........

  • College professor with a shady past... that's some funny stuff. I'm feeling you.

  • McDonald vs Fegan, i like Fegan better

  • He's awesome, and so is Donald!!

  • Keith Carlock will be on the cover of the 2011 Modern Drummer magazine.

  • Oh snap... I love Steely Dan!

  • Michael Mc Donald & Steely Dan .. in fairness Michael has transgressed Fagen's Meglomania .... I do Love Donald ....

  • Buy a camera!!!

  • i would be fuckin JAMMIN!

  • whatever happened to Skunk Baxter?

  • @bughead3 statrted the doobie brothers?

  • @bughead3 He left for the Doobie Brothers in 1974-75

  • Saw Steely last year, saw McDonald in '88 whoa!!!! I'm fuckin' old, still lovin' this tho!

  • Herrington does a nice Dias 'electric sitar' solo on his Tele, too.

Saw this line up (but without MMcD) a few years ago in Sydney. One of the best concerts EVER. McDonald is a great counter to Fagen. Great modulations too.

  • MAN Carlock looks so bad in this video. He HAS dropped a LOT of weight since this.

  • News broke today that Soul Singer Michael McDonald has put his solo career on hold to form a new supergroup with Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. It is reported the new group will be called "McSteely". (it would be pretty neat though, wouldn't it?)

  • @BigBoiJC I suggest the name, "Doobie Dan."

  • @Larrymh07 One Russ Woodgates of VOA suggested this back in 1977, as the two groups were swapping members... Steely Brothers or Doobie Dan. What goes 'round comes 'round. 34 years on.

  • @Mobra50 Weren't Steely Dan offing their off cuts (apart from McDonald) to the Doobies? Either way it must have been ego central.

  • I'm not sure what the attraction is with Michael Mcdonald.

  • @pbaylis1 He has a very powerful, impressive vocal range, and he has a very unique style of phrasing, A lot of his stuff is cover songs but he always does the song justice or does it BTTER than it was originally. And for that he gets respect. He contributed to the doobie brothers way back and was fantastic. Cheers! :)

  • MM is so above these guys. He's blue eyed soul !!

  • stephen colbert shreds! @2:13

  • this is horrible ......... like the suburban garage musicians

  • These boys are too BAAAAAAAD, for words. Bad to the Bone.

  • Awesome trip back to 'the day'! They still sound awesome!

  • My cousin is a big-wig in the music business, and said Walter and Donald were some of the nicest, most down to earth guys he's ever met!

  • Interesting with Mike's vocal.

  • Michael McDonald, back where he belongs.....in the 'Dan!

  • just seen them about a week ago and was disappointed. Were you???

  • Great!

  • Pure Class.

  • Pure Class.

  • Keith Carlock is a beast!

  • Outstanding performance of the 'real deal' > Real musicians!

  • wow

  • que gran banda, el gitarrista extraordinario los vi en un video de especial de medianoche , y son lo maximo

  • @rialdo Si, esta banda es de lo mejor Americano de los anos 70's. Hoy lo que hay nuevo es porqueria...

  • almost as good as a double rainbow

  • anyone else cream their pants after that drum solo?

  • The end of the song was a song within a song featuring a brief but bombastic drum solo. Wow!!!

  • Being a musician song writer from Santa Barbara I used to know Michael from around the clubs. One night he's setting up for a solo act, nobody recognizes him and I go that's Michael McDonald, they go no. We are the front table, and after he sings his first note I say ; "See." When he finishes he comes, pulls up a chair next to me, and sits down. They all fell out of their chairs! I used to see Kenny in Montecito at Tutti's Restaurant but never worked with him. Rick Gregory and I played SB

  • smooth jazz...just great

  • @numberwang2020 no this is NOT smooth jazz at all

    it'sgreat but not that label

  • for some reason Walter Becker reminds me a little bit of Scofield

  • I love mike but I can't get my head around this..this is a fagan tune PERIOD.

  • @ishredu -- Well, you know, of course, that Michael McDonald sang backup on several of the early Steely Dan Recordings -- BAD SNEAKERS is one of my favorite.

  • @ishredu I agree!!

I love Michael but like you said this is a Fagan tune period!!

  • I love this. It's one of my favorite songs and I'm a big fan of Michael McDonald. He sings great with Kenny Loggins, too.

  • This song is the jam Jack.

  • A song of recidivism. Perfect thing to sing to an Atlantic City crowd.

  • Um i like the original alot better.

  • Where is Denny Dias when you need him? He is the only person alive who can play his solo like it was meant to be.

  • Herrington is a fantastic freek...

  • this guitar player has a bunch of guitars

  • donald fagen sings it much better by himself

  • @badresturant Fagen has issues with his singing.. everybody knows that, but we love him anyway.. :) Michael Mc Donald was a hell of a good pick from Fagen at the time .. two excellent albums of Steely Dan where he sings .. try them ( Katy Lied is my fav.. )

  • youd have to start taking a hell of a lot of drugs to reach that level ^^

  • @Soix sure you need the drugs.. but.. it won't do shit if you're not already a genius before taking them .. lol

  • They Look Debonair with their grey hair!!!! lol

  • wow, wtf is text mode??

im trippin balls off this shit :P

  • Walter Beccker looks like that college professor you had that had a shady past.

  • @pretorious700 : that seems about right...what do u think Walter?

  • @pretorious700

    hahahah

  • @pretorious700 --and we wonder what YOU will look like when you are his age !

  • @durgaaa I AM his age junior.

  • @pretorious700 --did you mean to put a comma , , , after the word "age" ? Because if you didn't, I certainly do not know what an "age junior" is.

I was born in 1951, ..... and what year were YOU born? Please tell us what a "shady past " might be for Walter.

  • @durgaaa Is there some reason you needed to post this reply 3 times?

We are exactly the same age, sorry for the "junior", I'm just used to talking to kids on here.

    Merry Xmas.

  • @pretorious700 My bad, 13 times.

  • @pretorious700 they all look like iffy lecturers...lecherers even!

  • @pretorious700 especially since I went to Berklee!

  • @pretorious700 I know, right?

  • @pretorious700 he looks like a child molester

  • Love Michael. But. No.

  • Michael McDonald..........I wish I could make my guitar sound like his voice, beautiful.Keep on doing your good works Soulgirl, lots of soul in it.Greets from Belgium.

  • nice jam soulgirl!

  • yeh

  • go back Jack and "do it again......Jack be nimble Jack be quick *smile

  • I didnt know Kenny Rogers did rock.

  • Nah can't be kenny, this guy's eyelids can still close LOL

  • He did psychedelic rock back in the day

  • awesome!

  • I love the video, the combinations of both Michael and Donald are nice. The band is fantastic.

  • Cool stuff, thanks for the post. I still need to get the cool Steely Dan T-shirt. Where can I find one?

  • Orangeviolins. I so hope for your sake that you are a female.

  • Just for all of you so called "perfectionistas" on this thread hating on this video. I find it excellent. Beautifully done and I thank Soulgirl for donating it to YouTube. I have tears in my eyes with all the harmonies and expertise. So There!

  • @rrdrums110

Dude, get your head out of the bass drum and let your ears stop bleeding from the noise that some "artists" call music today! WOW, this song actually has a melody, bass line, harmony and even...listen close....a counter melody as well. I guess someone has to bow at the alter of "Boom-Boom Pow".

  • Just a guess, but you don't play professionally do you?

  • @piper54alpha ..apparently they do not...(and neither do I for that matter) but I can tell you that I know quality when I see it as I have a taste for having once performed in front of an audience.

  • @orangeviolins I've played music as my sole profession for most of 33 years. You would be amazed what goes into performance, even at my level, much less the "stars".

  • @piper54alpha Who was the original singer of this classic on Can't Buy A Thrill? It sounds like Fagen and someone else.

  • Seriously.

This is not the groove that I grew up listening to.

  • Watching Keith Carlock play makes chills go up my spine.............that funky thing at the end just kills me. Spurts from Carlock are the best..........when he has those very specific measures to fill and precisely fills them for the big ending. There's nothing like it in the world of drumming.

  • This is not bad at all.. Mickey still got it ! They look Great together up there.

  • wow. I wish I could see a steely show with Michael singing lead on every song.

It's a shame. I love the Dan but it gets harder and harder to listen to donald's live vocals these days.

  • See.. You';re still pressing the overated bells and whistle button. Even claoming the dude can sing heavy rock. hahaha

You don't even know why you tell such lies.

  • rrdrums110 - you are a compete a**hole - M Mcdonald is one of the best EVER vocalists who can sing anything from heavy rock to soft motown classics - not to mention the dozens of fantastic songs written for Steely Dan / Doobies etc - I suggest you go see him live before posting futher crass comments.

    Talented or what !!!!

    UK fan

  • You gotta be kidding. The guy is a major singer and a master musician.

  • this is music, not just noise like some bands

  • Was this Hartford CT

  • that's Mac 2nite! top notch backing vocals on Peg, I got the News, Bad Sneaks etc

  • what an amazing band. every insturment. every singer. everything. every cd too!

  • what a combination!

  • I think it sounds great.

  • come listen hit my name tell me what you think

  • well it may be allowed to say that we would prefer the old version even if they play the new arrangement because they want some variations. that doesn't mean we are not allowed to judge it. and i really don't need explanations like "they vary it because otherwise it is boring"- their motivation is self- evident.

  • @janjanjan0 Well, that's the whole thing, you go exepcting to hear particular songs by a particualr group and you get something else. If it were just as good as the original or better, Hotel California, When Hell Freezes Over, for instance. Maybe you don't need an explanation, but that's usually why. Look at how Jimmy Page cheaps out on their best leads.

  • They change the arrangements because, well, they're bored with the old ones and want to mix it up (see Reelin' in the Years on AIA for a real rearrangement). That's jazz, and while SD isn't really truly jazz, they're kissin' cousins. If you want the album version, listen to the album.... I'm glad they cut loose a little more live, it's what I miss the most from the new album material compared to the old days.

  • the dan and the donald still rock

  • Comment removed

  • Really? Why? Oh yeah, you're right.

  • If you played this song about 5 or 10 thousand times, you might vary it as well

  • Know what you mean! I also prefer the album version.

This song should be left alone concerning other arrangsments.

Why change something that is already so good.

  • yeah the bass line differs from the old album version which i would prefer.. "in the morning they go gunnin', for the MAN.." when he sings MAN it is for example exactly the point where it differs

  • Comment removed

  • CARLOOOOOOCK! :-)

and the rest of the band of course.

  • I hope that you folks will take a break and watch Michael McDonald and Billy Preston sing "What's Goin On" before you continue to escalate this war of words.

There is powerful truth in these lyrics... War is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today

I'm an old man now. Before long my life will be over. Life goes by too fast to waste it with arguing and name calling.

Love the music and love each other!

  • Man, by the comments people are leaving one would think this was a hip-hop video. Cool to see Micheal with the Dan again.

  • This is so cool, why are some idiots fighting over it? Listen if you like it, otherwise turn it off and find something you do like. How about that Kieth Carslock solo? Come on, this stuff is GOLD baby.

  • McDonald's voice is not so bad--at least when he's doing Steely dan tunes----

"you love a little wild one...."

    still matters, somehow

  • Dude, your response is not something that Michael would appreciate.

I know nothing about "melanie," so I have no idea what his reaction to her might be. I have worked with Michael, however, and there is nothing about his demeanor, that suggests to me, that he would think such a statement to be appropriate

Furthermore ... "BekindBeNice" and you write this as a response?????.

  • come on!
