Most owners don't know but that is the only year they made the CLS55 AMG - 2006. I have a customer with one and I told him to hold on to it. Unfortunately with 39K miles, it has valve cover leaks that is causing smoke on the passenger side.

I'd say both are great cars but choosing either depends on the person. Even though not as fast and advanced, I'd prefer the Jaguar. It's all I'll ever want. Just plain and simple.

Reliability, It depends on when the car was made. Most problems were from cars when Jaguar was owned by Ford. Same with Land Rover.

Brand doesn't really matter. Toyota's known for reliability but now they're having problems with break pedals.

This comparison doesn't make sense at all. First, the Mercedes CLS was tuned by AMG where as the Jag was tuned by Jaguar themselves which isn't fair.

Second, the Jag focuses more on ride comfort with performance as second where as the CLS focuses more on sportiness with comfort as second.

Third, The Jaguar competes directly with the S class. Jaguar doesn't have something to compete with the CLS.

Well you have the more technology thing right. But Mercedes has been having troubles with reliability since the early ninties because they they cut costs. The jaguar was actually voted number one in quality by JD Power and Associates.

Looks are always going to be subjective to the buyer, but the luxury thing is a toss up. They both have swathes of wood and leather, but as far as luxury saloons go the jag would probably win because it has a better ride quality.

I think if you just lowered the suspension by 2cm/an inch or so, it'd really be a good handling car. Mine is just 15mm lowered and it's such a huge difference in grip and boat-likeness. But you'd pretty much ruin the floating-feeling, which i wouldn't compromise. It's a jag, not a MB AMG.

occasionally i drive a 294hp jaguar xj8, and it's a very nice car, highly underrated, and i believe it handles better than an xjr, in part due to its lighter weight. the british CAR mag said it's the best jag ever and as nimble as a 5-series bmw. also, the jag's stock tires are made for fuel economy, so you have to replace them with high performance rubber and it's going to handle much better. but yeah, this cls 55 is designed to run against cars like the M5, of course it's going to be better.

The Jag may be light, but just because it's light doesn't mean it will handle great. It does well enough, but it isn't tuned as buttoned down as the Merc. Factor in the 516 lb-ft @ 2650 rpm in the AMG, and the Jag doesn't stand a chance.

But we'll be getting a new XJR AND CLS63 AMG soon, so we'll see.

The Jag was new for 2003, the MB was new for 2005. That's a minimal difference. Brits always bias towards British cars, so I'd say it's quite a feat the MB was praised as it was.

The 2010 XJ will be much larger, though not likely faster than the new CLS63. For its new size, I'd compare it more with the S63 among Benzes. The XFR and CLS63 are competitors there. Plus, don't forget the CLS will be new in about 24 months also!
