Sorry, her voice is NOT enoiugh for me. You can hear that, without the help of the engineers you woiuldn't hear any of her lower middle voice at all. She had pushed it so much that there is nothing but air there. The ascents to high C are painful, and NO, Verdi never asked for the voice of the devil here. The runs down from the C are inaccurate. Why the improper accents on the wrong syllables "qui verraNNO". Love the intensity and her guts, but...
@luwaig1 She NEVER thought she could do it in the theater. That was widely documented in the press everywhere in the world around the time of this recording. It was Muti who wanted her in the studio. There are plenty of studio only assumptions that work including Sutherland's Turandot. The point is that she has the COLOR that is perfect for the role. Muti was right: in the studio this is a major performance.
Its the Muti recording, isn't? She has fierce- but- its more screaming than singing (1.54)...You know what Lina Pagliughi has said (in the book THE LAST PRIMADONNAS)...Once was a soprano legiero (Scott) but know shes sreaming- ...Oh God shes sreaming....
AND SHES RIGHT!!!! Scotto was a good singer, with dramatic presence- but this recording is horrible!!!!
OOHH NO how anti-climactic she didnt sing a high C at the end that just ruined it, i recently noticed how i had almost never heard Scotto in Verdi, she was borne to sing Verdi, no wonder she just didnt sound right in Puccini,
@theprimadonna1980: The high C at the end is not a note written by Verdi. It is traditional and I personally have no problem with it, but Muti is a purist and is of the "sola scrittura" philosophy. His Traviata, also with Scotto, is likewise stripped of all traditional high notes, transpositions, tempo changes, etc. Actually Scotto sang a lot of Verdi roles: Desdemona, Luisa Miller, Elisabetta, Amelia, Elena, Violetta, Gilda, Leonora, Alice, Nannetta, Giselda, Lady Macbeth...
We all know thatScotto would have been fool-hearty to sing this role on stage. However, on a recording her voice has the range, the agility and the vocal color to sing this part. Her earlier recording of this scena on herVerdi arias disc w/Gavazenni is even better. Her word pointing and vocal color is stunning. If we didn't know this wasScotto, for a RECORDING,she is perfect for the role.Could Muti and Levine been wrong about her Lady?It was a brilliant portrayal, but probably took yrs off her voice.
Nobody / and I mean NOBODY / can get close to Callas and Ghena.-the first is simply a Goddess and the latter is the one who the role was created for.
Scotto is terrible as Abigail and It's NOT Muti's fault ! She simply does not have the voice for this part that requires one to be either Ghena or Callas.
I agree that Scotto is not Abigail as she gives everything she has and everything she has not got. However, there are some marvellous sopanos who did justice to the role besides the wonderful Ghena and Maria. What about Souliotis, Tinsley, Valayre to name a few?
A parte la direzione di Muti (pessima) e la mancanza dell' acuto finale, Lei è eccezionale. La direzione: una banda di paese....(povero Verdi, reso così volgare)
Yes, intelligent she certainly is - but no amount of smarts can hide the fact thqt she didn't have the voice for Abigaille. Love Scotto, but this and Lady Macbeth were two roles that were beyond her vocal capacities.
@goldenthroat86 Big difference.. Callas performed the role on stage. whereas Scotto would not be heard past the thrid row... this is simply a studio recording.

Abigail sung by some one who will never be an Assoluta and reduced to a clown at a freak side show.

I like it, but it's done in a recording studio. Of course it's going to sound fabulous. The real question is could she do it live in the hall?

Renata è stupenda, con una autentica propensione drammatica,ma il timbro è troppo chiaro in questo caso;comunque molto brava e intensa...
