A true classic! I remember my parents having this album and I played it so so many times. I was ~5yrs old then, now 46. I remember the day I heard he passed, Johnny Cash, you are missed!
One of my mother's conservative friends wouldn't let her daughter listen to Hilary Duff because she was too "provacative." I was the same age when my mom bought this album for me. Guess that's why I'm so fucked up. Depends on your point of view I guess.
I watched this in the early 70s ... while I was doing borstal. I was a young lad . I got caught trying to escape ( grassed up by fellow inmates- while on a welding course where I made a false hacksaw blade and replaced it with a real one ) and spent many hours watching the pidgeons and starlings through a metal window . Maximimum security . I didnt appreciate it .... I sure do now , I dont regret the memories though . I ended up doing 12 years .
There will never be another Johnny Cash and that is a true fact! Johnny Cash brought freedom to America and we all love him 50 years down the line! :)
@animalman1122 I'm slowly going through the footage available and synching the songs with the sound from the CD. However, I'm not sure where to find a studio recorded version.
@ nutsack666 - I'll decide how I want to 'take' or interpret something, thank you... Patronising, inexplicably "lol"-worthy pulp courtesy of total strangers aside, Johnny Cash is a LEGEND. Respect.
@LimpingCrow I probably won't understand mate because I have never been inside a prison cell either as a convict or a guard....Thanks for sharing your point of view though ;)
I hated country music growing up in the 60"s and 70's. My dad would crank up the AM radio whenever he heard a Johnny Cash song, and I would cringe. Now, I'm in my late forties, and listened to the song "Hurt" and got turned on to Cash. I started listening to more of his music and realized he is one of the most complex and versatile artists of the twentieth century. He was no country hick. He could be the best story teller in modern American history.
I do believe many of them are murderers, rapists, did things we could never. And they deserve to be in prison. That never meant they stopped being humans. If you're going to Hell, listen to Johnny Cash on the bus toor there.
This has song (the live version) has always been my favorite Johnny cAsh song. This is the first time I see video of it. Just as I suspected based on the audience's cheers on cd, I somehow felt that the audience, convicted cons as they were, were made to feel Human and free, even if for only a short while.
Cash won that crowd over.
I guess what I'm getting at is , even though imprisoned and whatever their crime, a part of them can still be human; even if just for a moment.
@praslin05 - I love Johnny and I agree with you, but it's worth adding that there will never be a duplicate of anyone in this world. Everyone - whether they're the legendary Johnny Cash or not - is a unique individual.
@Dingalingring lol. clearly its just a saying for a very unique and special individual. johnny made a huge impact on many people and touched many hearts. he was truly an exceptional human being. not to be taken literally.
Just drinking a beer, listening to Johnny Cash here. LIKE A BOSS.
