I've played this with my band and the mispitching and accidentals about half way through are deliberate to make it sound as if the band are getting a bit tipsy like in the film. :P

Taking the discussion back to the movie for a second. The 'bad playing' around 2'08" sounds like deliberate mis- pitching and slight delay to simulate the player being drunk, the 'bad playing/buzzing' sound at about 2'58" is like what you would get if you 'buzzed' the tune through a mouthpiece and possibly with 1/2 a trombone attached. As for the flutter-tongue- could not hear it either.

what I love about this scene is how one of the best bands in the country manages to play so convincingly badly. That's not easy to do.  and as for Pete Postlethwaite, it's possibly the best performance he's ever given (which is saying something).

Yes well it sounds to me like it's been recorded and then someones just blown into their mouthpiece all funny, so really it is possible for them to play badly. Anyhow, I don't play any brass, only string instruments and piano, but I'm trying to teach myself the trumpet at the moment with a bit of help from my boyfriend who also plays cornet. I want to watch brassed off with him.

I'm afraid I don't see eye to eye with you. The wrong notes in this video are not at all convincing, as they are played by a top notch euphonium player (whoever played for Grimethorpe at the time), who is unable to play badly as he has reached such a high level of playing.

Yeah well what I mean is, he's playing it "badly" so it sounds out of place and funny rather than bad so you don't want to keep listening. Thanks for telling me it was a euphonium by the way. They're all top notch.

@Tromboniwr The "bad" playing in this scene of the film is by the euphonium who hits wrong notes and cannot play the correct rythym. What has happened is they've had a few too many drinks and the lip is completely unresponsive, so the euph player cannot play properly, hence he's mispitching and can't get that triplet rythym.

Yes and no. Some people can play badly because that is just how they play, but really good musicians are better at playing badly so that it sounds funny rather than badly so you want to block your ears and close your eyes with the pain of its badness!
