The guys back then exaggerated things to make themselves seem bigger than they really were, but at the core, they were talking about their real experiences. Now, rappers just say what they think will sell. Most of them care more about just making money than they do about being the best (which is what rappers used to want). You don't hear Snoop Dogg bragging about how much money he's made. He talks about how good he is.
