That christian is acting like atheists are the ones with the selfish worldview?? That could not be further from the truth! It's literally the exact opposite.
They are the ones that fucking believe that everything in the entire universe was put here specifically for us, when atheists believe that we are just a small portion of it all.
Christianity is truly just arrogance parading as humility.
if it werent for the Christians at Malta the whole of the world would be under the scummy Muslims, stoning, hand chopping, head chopping, whip carrying zealots keeping women in their collective homes, beating the crap out of them, unreal. yup those Christians who have fought 4 u to keep ur 'EARTH WORSHIP'
right so know we are under scummy christians stoning burned at the stake for being a witch, hung by the neck or enslaved for being black. and the thinking educated people of this country dragging the fundies out of the dark ages kicking and screaming. today its evolution and gay rights but its still the same non-thinking fundies that are holding us back.
they fought because they were uneducated and easy to manipulate.
Its awesome that the theists are not attacking everyone else for exercising their right to free speech as well. I know in a lot of other states there's conflicts. Yayy tolerance
Well, one of this atheist's higher purposes in life is to seek knowledge about other people and their beliefs or lack thereof - with the goal of understanding rather than dismissing them in a simplistic, offhand manner.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. ~ Proverbs 4:7
In response to the piece of $h*&'s comment at 0:53, I must say this:
How ignorant and prejudiced can one person be? Are you seriously speaking your stupid ignorant opinion on the news, as if it's a fact?
As a proud Atheist chemist I can say I live my entire life for a higher purpose, researching and discovering cures and treatment for cancerous tumors. How selfish is that? More generally, I also live for the progress of the human race, human solidarity, and the spread of freethought/speech
I was a bit appalled by his statement as well, very rarely to I concern myself on my own wants or wishes. Often, I end up sacrificing my time and money to help others out, knowing that someone else might not be.
As an atheist I am proud to say I am always searching for clues to help me understand the massively complex universe I live in. With the amount of unknown out there I do not have time to waste sitting behind a wall hoping for someone to save me.
Yes! You nailed it on the head. As I have heard other say, and repeated myself, a thousand hands clasped in prayer cannot accomplish as much as two hands at work.
The irony with this guy is that most xtians are far more selfish than atheists. This is because they only commit good acts for fear of god's retribution, or to 'earn' themselves a spot in heaven. Whereas we commit to good acts because we actually WANT to help people!
Dawkins' "Selfish Gene" illustrates this point beautifully.
***thousand hands clasped in prayer cannot accomplish as much as two hands at work***
Right on, brother! Just because Christians gave us all our rights and freedoms doesn't mean we can't trash 'em, if we want to. Our parents worked hard to give us a start in life and we libertarians treat them like dirt too. Ayn Rand said it was okay to do that, 'cause we're number one.
I am NOT a libertarian, but anyways.. Just because someone gave us our rights and freedoms, does not mean their personal religious beliefs were substantiated or correct. Also, many of the founding fathers were NOT xtian - they were deist at best.
In fact, one of those rights they gave me was called the "Freedom of Speech" where I am allowed to say whatever I want to whomever I want. I can understand being respectful, but this wouldnt be an issue if they were respectful to me initially. Thanks
This fool fisherman seems to be pretty confident that he has the correct view on reality. His ad hominem and sarcastic commentary to our statements is very indicative of how very little support he has for his beliefs.
Where is his arguement? Where are his points, and justifications, for the nonsense he is spitting out? No where I can see, probably because they are in the same boat as his xtian god, the imaginary one that Noah rode in with all those millions of animals.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
1. the founding fathers weren't deists or atheists or xtians. They were Christians. Your inability to acknowledge that basic fact says much about your respect for 'justifications.'
2. it is thanks to Christians you have the freedoms to insult my brethren at his special time of the year. Not Muslims, not Bhuddists, and most certainly not atheists. Communist atheists murdered over 100 million people in the 20th century alone.
Oh really? Wow, you've quite clearly demonstrated exactly how ignorant you are of both history, and reality. The personal beliefs of the F.Fathers can (for some) be argued, but generally they were open with their beliefs. They were also many other things I might consider less-than-desirable, does this make the foundations of the USA anything other than what the Constitution says they are? No, it does not.
This "brethren" of yours insults me with his ignorance, and I can respond how I choose.
Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear. - letter to Peter Carr, Aug. 10, 1787
"History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance, of which their political as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purpose." - to Baron von Humboldt, 1813
"The truth is, that the greatest enemies of the doctrine of Jesus are those, calling themselves the expositors of them, who have perverted them to the structure of a system of fancy absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come, when the mystical generation [birth] of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation [birth] of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."
We discover in the gospels a groundwork of vulgar ignorance, of things impossible, of superstition, fanaticism and fabrication ."
"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."
Christianity neither is, nor ever was, a part of the Common Law." -letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, 1814
"The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds, Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole cartloads of other foolish trumpery that we find in Christianity."
"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it."
"Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise." -letter to Wm. Bradford, April 1, 1774
"The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries." -1803 letter objecting use of gov. land for churches
"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half of the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.
Communist atheists murdered millions? That's just a big load of nonsense if I've ever heard of one. People who do not believe in god are no less likely to be an evil and disturbed individual than those who do.
These responses, and your others I have read, show your true character. You are just like this ignorant prick in the video, and you both plainly don't know anything much besides what you learned in highschool, and what you hear from your Right-Wing crackpot info-tainment "journalists."
no kidding, poeple who murdered don't do it because of their athiesm, thats like saying people with glasses have killed because of the glasses. Many religious people have killed or hated soley in the name of religion.
That's right. Today I celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. Why don't you and your retarded posse celebrate the birthday of a famous atheist, tomorrow? Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, take your pick.
i did look into this and from what i can tell he was about as christian as our politicians now. it also seems that he was pretty much what ever he needed to be depending on who he was talking to. anyway it doesn't really matter if he was a christian.
i think you need to do a little reading up on history. hitler was a christian. like any politician today he used the prejudices and religious beliefs of the majority to gain their trust and manipulate them. its easy if you know that people hate gays just make some laws that discriminate against them after all they are the minority the "meek"
I also celebrated xmas this Dec 25th, along with my wife and my 2-yr-old daughter. I understand the origins of the holiday are a modification of the celebration of the birth of Mithras from a Roman tradition, but I'm sure you're above anything that shows reality might not necessarily agree with your preacher, so I don't expect you to know about that.
While sitting at your tree, pull out your bible and read Jeremiah 10, decorated trees are against your god's words. But I'm sure you knew that.
I much rather say Xmas, just as I rather say Xtian. Giving the title 'Christ' signifies that you actually believe Jesus was some sort of Messiah, and I do not believe Jesus was anything more than another crazy self-appointed 'prophet', just like all of the rest, if he even existed at all. From the evidence found outside of the bible, the only thing that is even slightly supportive is that the idea of Jesus is just a basterdization of the original cult of Zoroastrianism.
***I much rather....as I rather....I do not believe***
Ian, do you ever read your own posts? Take a look at how insufferably self-centered you are. Which yet again proves my point that so-called atheists just want to justify their own selfishness. Cowardly types too because their attacks are always on Christianity, never Islam. Do you think the bald freak in the video above would dare to try it on, with Muslims?
historically and even presently christians have not been tolerant of other religions. after all the bible tells them that jehovah is the only true god. have you ever heard of the crusades. most fundi christians in this county justify new laws because "the bible says so" they are NOT tolerant our freedoms came from our deist forefathers who knew the church and state needs to be kept separate. what action(s) by atheists led to ANYONE'S death?
This fellow here, Mr. Fisherman, quite clearly has about as much knowledge of history as any other highschool-dropout, who spends his nights reading biased web pages written by xtian apologists, and ignoring any "reality" that contradicts his beloved theologians and their ever-shifting interpretations, necessary so they will not be seen as fundamentalist fanatics.
He is quite clearly deluded, and has no strong arguements, as nearly every reply from him is just another irrelevant ad hominem.
He! I've shown that your arguments, your attitudes towards Christmas, even your screen names are nonsensical and illogical. Here's a shortlist of your recent collective lies:
Christmas celebrates the birth of Mithras
Hitler was a Christian
The Pope assisted Hitler
Christians invented/maintained slavery
I hope you guys aren't American citizens because that great country doesn't deserve the virus of your sick philosophy.
You are quite clearly attempting to misrepresent things I have said, and considering that people could scroll up and re-read my comments...
I am sorry my friend, but you cannot say, 'That's a lie! This is how it really is!' - giving nothing to support your point, and expect people to believe you.
You've shown your true colors. It is apparent you are just a troll trying to provoke people, for what reason I cannot imagine. It is too late, you have proven that you are an ignorant idiot.
@IanBillings00 this guy is a deush bag who just takes random quotes out of context, like all religious people, theres no point trying to argue with him
Agreed, I made my point about that ignorant prick in the video, and that's fine. I am going to move on from this video now, and save my time and energy for something more worthwhile. Arguing with close-minded people is like my 2 year old trying to fit the triangle block into the circle hole; she might try for a while, but after a few attempts she gives up and realizes there's no point.
sad us atheists believe in nothing but ourselves- I can see the value in worshiping a deity that likes killing babies for no reason though...that makes me sad.
The sign wasn't rude or insulting, but it didn't stop the Christian they interviewed from insulting Athiests and Agnostics as a whole. By saying all those who don't believe in a god only live to serve themselves. That's incredibly prejudice. There's plenty of people who are atheists who live their lives to help and service others.
"athiests believe in no higher purpose than themselves"
Really? I thought it was about NOT believing you have to bow and scrape to a non-existant deity through fear he'll cast you into some firey pit when you die.
Atheists believe in reality and at least some of us believe in humanity, and I consider both of them to be greater than myself. And much more important than any sky gods.
On the other hand, because tautologically I am me and everything else is not me, I have to raise myself above everything else, from a personal perspective :)
»Free speech zone« (0:58). I've read this term once as an example for an oxymoron. It indicates that it's free speech that should be boxed in, monitored and constrained, and not its counterpart, censorship.
The display is beautifully worded. It mentions Horus, Mithras, Dionysos and »the Christian god Jesus«. I hope that many people will look up those guys' biographies.
That christian was a smug prick, couldn't just say he had no problem with the display, just had to make a dig at atheists during his 30 seconds of fame. Then we he does it he declares his typical christian ignorance of even what an atheist is.
I don't share the need to believe in ANYTHING. That doesn't meen my life is without value or values. It's just that i don't think faith is a necessary pre-requisite for anything useful at all. Well, I DO believe it's going to rain tomorrow, though...
"Believe in nothing higher then themselves. No higher power or reason to live except for self." Pathetic. So doing as you think god wants you to do so you can get into heaven is not selfish? And realizing the universe is much bigger then just earth is selfish? Nigga please.
OK as a fellow North Carolinian, I have to say this makes me happy - hurray for atheists getting equal time! and a surprisingly level headed news report as well (this is the bible belt after all)
My higher purpose is for my children and my family. If God told me to sacrafice my first born son for his "Higher Purpose" I'd tell him to stick His purpose where the sun don't shine.
"no other reason to live than self"....we ALL live for ourselves! BUT the purpose of one's self is mostly social (fight or flight attributes to reason to live too)...but then again that's all studies in science..who gives a crap about that!
jtbovis..... That's the hallmark of religion: To break you down and deem you unworthy and, in general, a sinful MAGGOT. The LAST thing clergy want you to do is feel self-worth, because that's when you begin to question things, and they CERTAINLY don't want that, because then the cash stops rolling in.
Funny how it's totally cool for a Christian to go on the news and strawman / insult other people's beliefs.
Suppose the free-thinker had said, "Hey, at least the solstice is REAL! Those Christians believe in a talking snake and a magic baby who tells them that we should all hate homosexuals. It's just sad..."
@meatpupette Since when did anything/anyone have "souls"? Our brains have consciousness, something the ancients who invented "souls" knew nothing about. Ah, isn't it great we have science today instead of ancient, ridiculous superstition?:)
What's wrong with believing in one's self? I suppose I would rather do that than believe in a God that likely doesn't exist! I k now I exist and VALUE myself and life-we only live once and then the clock runs out!
Geez Mr. Christian, you could of just said been very simple in your talk and of come across as a tolerant, reasonable Christian. But no you just had to go that extra mile didn't you? You just had to get a dig on somebody else's opinion and now you come across as something with intolerance to spare which now makes me doubt the sincerity of your very first line. Good job..
Watch out....Fox news may come down and act like a bunch of dicks to you guys. Its to nice to see people smiling together like that for Christmas to have Bill O'Reilly come down and wine.
That Christian has some pretty nasty generalizations about atheists...
I, personally, try to avoid being a narcissist all the time. It is the Christian that thinks so highly of himself, that he believes the creator of the freaking universe 1: is knowable 2: can and does speak to him.
The Christian in the report displays the typical arrogance of his mindset, "People "like that"... atheists ...bellieve in nothing but themselves..." as if you have to believe in God to be a good person. NOT SO... If the guy were more educated, he'd know more about what Atheist actually believe and not talk such nonsense.

IanBillings00 2 years ago 5
I was a bit appalled by his statement as well, very rarely to I concern myself on my own wants or wishes. Often, I end up sacrificing my time and money to help others out, knowing that someone else might not be.
As an atheist I am proud to say I am always searching for clues to help me understand the massively complex universe I live in. With the amount of unknown out there I do not have time to waste sitting behind a wall hoping for someone to save me.
thatotherwierdguy 2 years ago 2
IanBillings00 2 years ago
***thousand hands clasped in prayer cannot accomplish as much as two hands at work***
Right on, brother! Just because Christians gave us all our rights and freedoms doesn't mean we can't trash 'em, if we want to. Our parents worked hard to give us a start in life and we libertarians treat them like dirt too. Ayn Rand said it was okay to do that, 'cause we're number one.
downriggershop 2 years ago

IanBillings00 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
1. the founding fathers weren't deists or atheists or xtians.

'Xmas'? Oh, you mean Christmas, Ian. The day of the year when Christians celebrate the birth of their Saviour.
And when atheists suppress their hate and intolerance, in order to score some food and gifts.
downriggershop 2 years ago
I much rather say Xmas, just as I rather say Xtian. Giving the title 'Christ' signifies that you actually believe Jesus was some sort of Messiah, and I do not believe Jesus was anything more than another crazy self-appointed 'prophet', just like all of the rest, if he even existed at all. From the evidence found outside of the bible, the only thing that is even slightly supportive is that the idea of Jesus is just a basterdization of the original cult of Zoroastrianism.
IanBillings00 2 years ago

Ian, do you ever read your own posts? Take a look at how insufferably self-centered you are. Which yet again proves my point that so-called atheists just want to justify their own selfishness.
