I like how the airships were colored in the NES version. In the SNES version they just made them all brownish.

The NES version has it easy as there are fewer colors. I didn't think Mario 3 was on the SNES though. For the NES version, the same texture could be used, but simply changing a color entry in the palette is all that's needed to get multiple colors.
