What you said during the theory part was kind of confusing. You said that you were in the key of Ab which in standard tuning is at the 4th fret but you were at the fifth. But then you go to play the C chord which is at the correct position if you were in standard tuning. So I am assuming that you meant in the key of A Minor because you were using the minor penotonic. Just trying to clarify.
@schweppes1010 Yea i'm pretty positive he is. I was just making sure. If he was he needs to say he is playing an a flat chord or g sharp, because there is a huge difference between Ab and Am
Great lesson. A bit frustrating though. It is this kind of sound that I love about Hendrix's playing but it's also this kind of technique that I can't easily pull off due to my *extremely* small hands. I mean I can pull of the thumb over chord stuff but on that partial G form for instance I cannot keep my index barred across all 5 strings while having my thumb over. On my strat I can cover the D,G,B and E strings but not the A string. I know I could be a better player if I had bigger hands :-(
what do terms "4 chord", "c chord/form", "1 chord", etc, really mean? am i missing something, because, i am familiar with music theory and i can't figure out what do these terms mean.
great lessons btw, keep up the good work! you really have the skills, and the tone
@bogdan988 E/A/C/D/G chord 'forms' are chords that take the shape of those letter chords in the lowest position on the fretboard, but moved to other places on the fretboard. A 4 chord, or IV chord is a chord that is based on the 4th note of the scale being used. A C form IV chord is a chord using the C chord shape/fingering, based on the 4th note of the scale being used.
grip harder :-) Seriously though, it's a technique that takes some people a long time to master. I've got a premium lesson called "The Grip" just about this technique which has been quite popular at the site.
Oh also, question! Are you using your thumb to reach over the neck and bar that root note on the low 'E' string when you're playing certain chords? Like the 'E' shape or the 'C' shape?
Yes I am. This grip is what I call "The Grip" and it's been used by most famous blues players. I've got a lesson on it called, surprisingly, "The Grip". Part of the Essential Techniques series.
I really like this lesson.... it's right up my alley.
I've bought a quiet a few lessons and love them...... I highly recommend you . I like advance level lessons, hint hint. my playing is allot better now thank you God bless you.
hey man thanks for the D chord! I didn't know that....
btw I always find myself in a dilema wether or not to use the A string when playing A form of chords... the three strings are great for quick combination but sometimes I find it lacks bottom so I use the A. Is there any way around it? I suppose not...?
man, awesome job breaking that down. i believe i used all of those chords without even knowing it in my star spangled banner rendition. thanks for breaking it down...really makes sense now!
Extremely helpful, I've never been able to make out how SRV and Jimi play those kind of fat lead chords while watching them play... nice break down of the material.
see i love all this and its a great lesson but what i want to understand is the key its in, what other chords relate to all this and how all what was played in the intro sticks together?!! Amazing lesson though great style!
@gr8bluesgtr hey whats up anthony, my name is andoni I have been playing guitar for 7 or 8 years now all kinds of styles and right know I have tendinitis like for the fourth time in my life and I realized that what I really am is a blues guitar player I am wondering how do you usually practice, what do you recommend for beign a bitching blues player? and as what i mean is ear training, learning steve rays licks by ear or what?
just a question, what pick ups and amp are you using?? thanks.

This sounds a lot like John Mayer at the beginning.
Given...John Mayer sounds a lot like Stevie Ray Vaughan sometimes...
And Stevie Ray had a tendency to sound kind of like Hendrix sometimes....

Nice lesson. I like jamming along when am drunk, and this was great for that.
FWIW - I think it's best to stick to one *idiom* rather than mixing them, i.e. use music theory OR guitarist *shapes*.
Me? Am a great believer in theory, as it develops deeper insight, rather than being stuck playing in boxes.

Hey Anthony I have a question, when you are playing the partial D form chord after the 5, are you using your thumb to fret the Ab string?
Thanks!
rwebb61 1 year ago
@rwebb61 No, I can't quite reach that far, but I am using it to mute the A string.
gr8bluesgtr 1 year ago
@gr8bluesgtr i never actually believed people can mute the 5th string with their thumb, always figured you would have to dislocate it

bogdan988 1 year ago
@bogdan988
4 Chord- the 4 chord in a 1-4-5 12 bar blues progression, for example if you played 12 bar blues in E the chords would be E-A-B which is = 1-4-5
And I beleive that C, D, G and E form chords just means similar to those chords in the open position.
rwebb61 1 year ago
@bogdan988 E/A/C/D/G chord 'forms' are chords that take the shape of those letter chords in the lowest position on the fretboard, but moved to other places on the fretboard. A 4 chord, or IV chord is a chord that is based on the 4th note of the scale being used. A C form IV chord is a chord using the C chord shape/fingering, based on the 4th note of the scale being used.
