  • just a question, what pick ups and amp are you using?? thanks.

  • I usually add the pinky to the root on the 6th string when i play chords like @4:12

  • Jumbled or not, VERY valuable. Thanks as always.

  • Sweet, sweet tone in this vid. What are you using? Other than the strat, obviously. Pickups? Amp?

  • what camera did you use to record this video?

  • This sounds a lot like John Mayer at the beginning.

Given...John Mayer sounds a lot like Stevie Ray Vaughan sometimes...

And Stevie Ray had a tendency to sound kind of like Hendrix sometimes....

  • are you using your thumb to hold just the e string or both the e and a?

  • Your fingers look like they hurt. They're almost purple.

  • E, i thought that position was a major on 5th fret, where am i gettin confused?

  • sweet nail polish

  • @Magnawulf lmao, i knew something wasn't normal with those nails

  • You have really well kept hands. ^_^ haha

  • @JafoolyFaceLicks or just play everything a fret down?

  • instant hendrix: just add hammer-on!

  • that's a really nice guitar sound :) can tell what gear you are using on this one?

  • What you said during the theory part was kind of confusing. You said that you were in the key of Ab which in standard tuning is at the 4th fret but you were at the fifth. But then you go to play the C chord which is at the correct position if you were in standard tuning. So I am assuming that you meant in the key of A Minor because you were using the minor penotonic. Just trying to clarify.

  • @PinkFZeppelin I believe he's tuned down a half step, ala Hendrix.

  • @schweppes1010 Yea i'm pretty positive he is. I was just making sure. If he was he needs to say he is playing an a flat chord or g sharp, because there is a huge difference between Ab and Am

  • Nothings better than hearing a smooth strat in the morning

  • Grrrrrreat F'N Vid man U speak my language!

  • Lol Instant Gravity chord XD

  • Jesus Christ, you have a nice tone!

  • awesome playing, awesome teaching and awesome guitar, it's all WIN

  • I wonder if JH knew all this theory.. awesome lesson though.

  • shit hot lesson, i'll be saving this 1

  • your tone in this video sounds AWESOME! what are you using?

  • dude how do u get the tone to sound all tin/steel like? i love it and id like to mess around with a tone like that

  • How do you get that tone? I have a Marshall Class 5 amp, not a Fender amp.

  • wow, a strat really makes that hendrix sound, im on a les paul here and it just doesn't sound right

  • Nice lesson. I like jamming along when am drunk, and this was great for that.

FWIW - I think it's best to stick to one *idiom* rather than mixing them, i.e. use music theory OR guitarist *shapes*.

Me? Am a great believer in theory, as it develops deeper insight, rather than being stuck playing in boxes.

  • Great lesson!! I suggest listening 'life without you'.

  • great video, what sort of amp settings are you using and what is your tuning also what gauge of strings.

  • Great lesson. A bit frustrating though. It is this kind of sound that I love about Hendrix's playing but it's also this kind of technique that I can't easily pull off due to my *extremely* small hands. I mean I can pull of the thumb over chord stuff but on that partial G form for instance I cannot keep my index barred across all 5 strings while having my thumb over. On my strat I can cover the D,G,B and E strings but not the A string. I know I could be a better player if I had bigger hands :-(

  • @holuc08 you dont really need to hit the A string, it sounds better to mute the A string and also the high E

  • can i get the tabs for this somehow?

  • thank you soo much this is what ive been looking for you had so much in these ten minutes ! thank you

  • Hey Anthony I have a question, when you are playing the partial D form chord after the 5, are you using your thumb to fret the Ab string?

    Thanks!

  • @rwebb61 No, I can't quite reach that far, but I am using it to mute the A string.

  • @gr8bluesgtr i never actually believed people can mute the 5th string with their thumb, always figured you would have to dislocate it

  • what do terms "4 chord", "c chord/form", "1 chord", etc, really mean? am i missing something, because, i am familiar with music theory and i can't figure out what do these terms mean.

great lessons btw, keep up the good work! you really have the skills, and the tone

  • @bogdan988

4 Chord- the 4 chord in a 1-4-5 12 bar blues progression, for example if you played 12 bar blues in E the chords would be E-A-B which is = 1-4-5

And I beleive that C, D, G and E form chords just means similar to those chords in the open position.

  • @bogdan988 E/A/C/D/G chord 'forms' are chords that take the shape of those letter chords in the lowest position on the fretboard, but moved to other places on the fretboard. A 4 chord, or IV chord is a chord that is based on the 4th note of the scale being used. A C form IV chord is a chord using the C chord shape/fingering, based on the 4th note of the scale being used.

  • Anthony, thank you for all you do to promote great Blues guitar! I have learned a great deaa from you, thanks and God Bless!

  • love your tone... what guitar and amp do you use? im looking for a new guitar and amp myself.. got any suggestions?

  • Great lesson!

  • I dont have enough words to thank you man!! keep them coming!

  • man i always check out your lessons even if i know to play what's in it and this one is great

each one of the tips is awosome man

people usally put this kind of thing to the playing after struggling with a song for days

    it's like 4 lessones

  • Great lesson Anthony. As always...a great help for those of us struggling to break through barriers.

  • this video just answered a lot of questions i had about mayer's version of "bold as love". thanks anthony.

  • Damn I wish I had John Mayer/ Hendrix/ SRV like hands, so that my thumb could reach over comfortably. Makes suspensions so much easier.

  • everybody can use the thumb, it just takes practice

  • Is that nail varnish? ;-)

    Great sounding tones as always.

  • great tone.

  • As always great lesson. We all appreciate all the work you put into this getting us up and running. Thanks

  • I'm Anthony, but thanks :-)

  • can you please tell me what guitar/pick ups and amp you use here? thanks... great video

  • KSW Strat w/stock pickups, Samamp VAC 23 :-)

  • thanks!

  • Some nice idea's there Anthony. Thanks again.

  • how do you get your pointer to bar those low strings on your e shaped chords using the grip??? i cant do it to save my life

  • grip harder :-) Seriously though, it's a technique that takes some people a long time to master. I've got a premium lesson called "The Grip" just about this technique which has been quite popular at the site.

  • Oh also, question! Are you using your thumb to reach over the neck and bar that root note on the low 'E' string when you're playing certain chords? Like the 'E' shape or the 'C' shape?

  • It looks like he is. I'm pretty sure Jimi did as well. :)

  • Yes I am. This grip is what I call "The Grip" and it's been used by most famous blues players. I've got a lesson on it called, surprisingly, "The Grip". Part of the Essential Techniques series.

  • This is fantastic man! I love your videos. I'm more of a country picker, but i love what i can achieve by combining twang with rock/blues licks.

    Cheers!

  • do you use 12's? I use d adario 12-52s.

  • .11 - .49 - EXL115

  • dude your vids are awesome. just discovered your site and i love srv so much. plan to be watchin almost all of them/

  • I really like this lesson.... it's right up my alley.

I've bought a quiet a few lessons and love them...... I highly recommend you . I like advance level lessons, hint hint. my playing is allot better now thank you God bless you.

  • Thank you sir.

  • hey man thanks for the D chord! I didn't know that....

btw I always find myself in a dilema wether or not to use the A string when playing A form of chords... the three strings are great for quick combination but sometimes I find it lacks bottom so I use the A. Is there any way around it? I suppose not...?

  • Actually was a C-Form chord, not D-Form chord :-)

  • I loved this lesson. And I loved your tone. Don't ever stop posting!

  • No plans of stopping.

  • man, awesome job breaking that down. i believe i used all of those chords without even knowing it in my star spangled banner rendition. thanks for breaking it down...really makes sense now!

I love the tone- is the a John Mayer Custom?

  • Thanks, it's a KWS signature strat.

  • Extremely helpful, I've never been able to make out how SRV and Jimi play those kind of fat lead chords while watching them play... nice break down of the material.

  • Thanks Anthony, I posted a little of what I learned. Very Helpful!

  • You seem like a decent guy and your videos are excellent - hard to find such dedication these days.

    Respect!

  • Thank you.

  • I usually dont get too caught up on tone but that is one of the nicest, deepest, most celestial tones I ever heard.

  • Awesome!!! If you were ever to do a DVD package specifically on this Hendrixy/SRV rhythm style, I would definately buy it.

  • gnarly strat.

  • I just received my KWS Strat...your videos convinced me to go for It...what a great axe...

Thanks for the lesson, very interesting as usual! Making chords more tasteful is always great.

  • Excellent!

All that great stuff given for free!

    Many many thanks.

    SB

  • Believe it or not, selling stuff take so much more work, giving stuff away is how I take a break from creating premium lessons :-)

  • Thanks this was great. I see a lot on licks and solos but not a lot on just rhythm

  • very usefull lesson

  • Excellent lesson Anthony, good exercise for the fingers those hammer off and ons.

I shall get the grip lesson.

  • This is what makes Youtube great.

  • by god i think i love

  • That tone is amazing. Anyone what amp is used?

  • Sure, it's a Samamp VAC 23, 1x15 combo. I've got a profile of it in the "My Gear" section at the site.

  • see i love all this and its a great lesson but what i want to understand is the key its in, what other chords relate to all this and how all what was played in the intro sticks together?!! Amazing lesson though great style!

  • can't you post a part of little wing??That's this kinda style, and I love it!

  • great lesson man!

  • I have learnt a lot from you, thank you very much.

  • you really are one of the best video maker on youtube, thanks, i'll try that lesson tonight

  • I gotta ask man, are those .011 gauge strings?

  • Yes.

  • What kind of amp did he use here? It sounds great!!!

  • Samamp VAC 23.

  • Really helpful, I've been trying to understand this for years! Finally getting some headway. Thanks for making this and sharing it with us, Anthony.

  • Great vid Anthony. You're a rock star

  • Does that mean I have to get a weird haircut and skinny jeans? I hope not. ;-)

  • many thanks. this was great help with some of the details I never knew properly

  • best hendrix chord lesson i've seen on youtube

  • lol

    "the GRIP"

  • It's that important :-)

  • @gr8bluesgtr hey whats up anthony, my name is andoni I have been playing guitar for 7 or 8 years now all kinds of styles and right know I have tendinitis like for the fourth time in my life and I realized that what I really am is a blues guitar player I am wondering how do you usually practice, what do you recommend for beign a bitching blues player? and as what i mean is ear training, learning steve rays licks by ear or what?

  • Nice lesson! :)

  • Excellent 5 Stars

  • Good stuff, some of that stuff are things I've been pondering over for quite some time now. Thanks!

  • Perfect stuff! I've been looking for something like this for a while :) 5*

  • great stuff anthony- it makes a differnce to jazz up straight chords if you are a rhythm player.

  • Thanks Anthony!
