Jimmy does rock! I wish he would get his shit together so Billy wasn't the only original member left. And if you want to talk about Nirvana, everyone owes them a due for opening up the flood gates for alternative rock, but, Nirvana as a band, never really accomplished much. Aside from their hits they don't have anything that's even tolerable to listen to. Maybe if Cobain wasn't a psychotic junkie they could have stayed together and put together some better stuff, but that never happened.

In the albums, Billy's voice changes and has a large range. Live, Billy's voice is just sort of a growl like this one. In the demos, Billy's voice is really high. It's weird.

Obviously Cobain was the better singer if you look at technique alone (well, technique and whether or not a voice is "aesthetically pleasing" - Corgan's voice, like Bob Dylan's, is more of an aquired taste). But Corgan didn't need to sing "well"; his songwriting skills, his virtuosity when it comes to instrumentals, and the sheer power of his performances (watch this video again and tell me it isn't powerful) far outweigh any need to sing with precision or "nicely."

I'm saying that Cobain's voice may seem more aesthetically pleasing than Corgan's, but Corgan has so much passion and power in his voice that he doesn't need the aesthetics. (People who don't know any better criticize Corgan for being too nasal, too "whiney," etc., and would probably prefer a singer with a deeper voice like Cobain's.) I always though Billy had a really pretty voice but I think he just doesn't choose to use it because the growl-whine delivery is more effective for his music. But to hear him sing "well" look at songs like Soothe, Stumbleine, and almost the entire Adore Album (Blank Page especially), he CAN do it.

I think he's more of Eric Clapton, or Pete Townshed, Paul McCartney of our time. He's a wonderfully talented Songwriter, Lead Guitarist, Live Performer, and producer. He helped define the rock music of his generation, and still does today. He has helped produce so many albums, played live with so many diffrent artists, lent his voice and his Axe to many performances and CD's, and he still does it to this day.
