I believe that Bach is the gateway for expression; that one can soothe their soul, as well as another, by portraying themselves, emotion and all, in one piece of his music. It's pure, and it touches you in a way that can be considered indescribable. Every partita and sonata I've heard written by the legend sounds a tad different from the other, and I feel that it's more unique and a blessing that way.
I heard that he wrote this in the vernacular of the time, but transcended the format with gusto. I read that he returned home after a long trip away to find that his wife was dead an buried. He then took the formula of the time and wrote his grief and longing. Like all great art, it takes the commonplace and transcends it.
Think of all the thousands of musicians who play or try to play Bach's music.
No matter how talented each one is, up to the immeasurable talent of Glenn Gould on his piano, or Heifetz on his violin, each is simply a doorway so we all have the ability to hear the genius of Bach.
they would all be nothing without the man Bach, I mean, honestly, who cares about Hilary Hahn without Bach's music coming from her hands? Nobody. We care about Bach.
Ahh. Syraz slightly chilled. This always makes me want a glass of moderately priced wine. This is a song i would want to be played at my funeral. But in a good way, while everyone is drinking a well formented $30 bottle of red wine. Some things just cant be substituted when achieving the shamanic state of Zen. I believe i have reached that frequency this very moment. Lovely.
I bought the CD this piece was on about 10 or 12 years ago. I needed to listen to a great violin interpretation because I'm a guitarist and most of the guitar recordings of this one are pure refuse. They stunk. I needed to hear a smooth and true baroque styled "minimalist" approach to the score. I found it hear from a teenage performer. Whoa thunk it. Nice job Hilary. You did well sticking to the way the true baroque was played back then.
some people will not agree with me, but I love how his works are so simple in some ways, yet so intricate at the same time, if that makes sense. Combined with the violin, his compositions allow the player to convey so many deep emotions, and recall past memories. Listening to interpretations like this remind me of why I love the violin so much, and why I will never quit! ^__^*
@XxchocoStrawberryxX I couldn't agree more! Tchaikovsky remains my favourite composer but yes, Bach draws beauty out of the simplest of notes. His works are among the easiest (of the hardest) to play but it evokes something in me though... :)
@XxchocoStrawberryxX If you know anything about music, Bach is far from simple. He definitely is the best composer of all time. His music sounds simple, but is insanely complex. The artistic vision he has is the most profound of all time.
@Blazer775 i definitely know from experience that his works are far from simple. I play violin for a long time, & *obviously* studied Bach. As far as rhythm and notes, many of Bach's pieces seem simple, but the intricacy lies in expression & inserting emotion. it takes years of honed skill to do well, not simply playing whats written b/c anyone can do that. Bach gives one the chance to make his pieces their own & can always be improved. As you say, you have to understand music to see it.(:
@XxchocoStrawberryxX So very true! I have noticed the same particularly with Bach's works of music.. Only the unconscious incompetent would believe ability matches passion/emotion in music. You can always distinguish a "good" violinist to a great one when you hear mechanical tone vs soul trenching, breath holding storytelling.
The more I listen to Hahn play the more I appreciate her playing. Her clarity, steadiness and good musicianship come from her calm demeanor and proper upbringing.
Every interpretation of a piece of music is portrayed through the hands of those who play it enveloping a part of their soul into the music, which is why when a different person plays the piece it has a different feel the the emotion in the piece.

@putaindepseudospris The theory that the Chaconne had been written as sort of a "Requiem" for his deceased wife has been raised by the German scholar Helga Thoene and demonstrated in a cd by Christoph Poppen and the Hilliard Ensemple. You can find the Chaconne played along with the mourning :chorales if you search here in Youtube
@ernent : I know this theory, it says the whole partita was dedicated to his wife, but it stills remains uncertain ... though this is a seducing and melodramatic theory. If there wasn't the chaconne, this partita would be considered as "normal". I believe Bach just wrote an extraordinary piece in this suite, like he did sometimes (remember the cadenza in the 5th brandenburg concerto, for example ...).
@TheIndianraven87 man or girl I feel exactly like you, people tells me why do u want to learn to play violin instead of other instrument? because u always like hard things? I say yes, but its because I really love violin, and as u said is the only instrument I can play to express how I feel
@TheIndianraven87 That's because it is! I started in my early 30s and at 40 changed careers and now own a violin store with more than 100 violins and 50 students. DON'T WAIT. DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU CAN'T OR IT'S TOO LATE EITHER!
I haven't been able to find a recording where the bowings written in the urtext edition are actually followed for the arpeggiac sections. It is a tricky part to play but beautiful if done correctly. (This recording is not exactly what bach wrote). If anyone knows what I am talking about and knows of a recording where I can see the right bowing and big stretches performed well I'd appreciate a post.
She is what the jazz world would call "a monster;" i.e., a force that can't be ignored or suppressed. You really can't choose from among monsters; if you move too close, any one of them will get you . . .
"My god, may I not loose my joy" (Mein Gott, möge ich nicht meine Freude verlieren) wrote Bach after finding his wife and two of his children had passed away while he was travelling.
@Davinp123 Actually it is written in D minor, which is the same clef as F major but with the C raised a half step. You can find sheet music for this online in many different places, but I would recommend imslp.org
I beleive she paints a wonderfull canvas, and that is the talent of a true artist, each has his or her own interpritation. This to anyones ear is Superb !, if everyone interpreted the music the same we wouldn't need Artists, Just Machines
Yeah, she played all the notes correctly and in tune. That's the extent of her interpretation. It still moves me, but the way Heifetz plays this piece makes me weep uncontrollably. I would wager that the majority of praises Hahn received here should really be directed at J.S. Bach.

My Gran died this morning (14th May 2011) - 30 minutes after finding out by phone, as a violinist, I realised that there was only one piece of music that I needed to listen to in this moment of grievance - that piece was Bach's Chaconne. R.I.P. Gran :'(
These version is many beautiful. But the version realized by the popular musician from Brasil, António Nóbrega, one man formed in Music Classic, but passioned by the culture from theNorthEast from Brasil is great. He used one type of popular violin from Agreste called "rabeca", made with one wood called "angico"...
@SubSevenHacker reading your message I was deeply touched.. please accept my condolonces, your gran was a very lucky lady who was bid farewell by beautiful music..
The best (in my h.o., of course) interpretation of Chaconne is performance by Ida Haendel in Moscow in 1957 (?) (not the later ones); This one by H H is very close. How this girl understood Bach is a great mystery.
I understand that aania889, but she could at least attempt to understand the emotion in the original piece thtrough the appropriate style. Though it is her interpretation so I will not judge too harshly.
Beautiful rendition and interpretation of a timeless and inordinately difficult to master classic. Quite different than Joshua Bell's interpretation, which I also really really love.
I'm used to hearing the chaconne played on the guitar but when I heard this interpretation on the voilin I began to realise that the chaconne is a conversation Between life and death, more specifically between Bach and the soul of his recently deceased wife (the chaconne was written after Bach returned home from travels to find his wife had been buried some time before). This piece is a glorious expression of grief.. how the heart responds to death and how a parted loved one may responnd...
The reason why this is my absolute favorite piece to play in the world is because it represents the epitome of heart, soul, and self-emotion. Music is about feeding your soul, feeding your heart, and when you play this piece, it is about you and your feelings, not about what everyone else has done. It is difficult and dangerous in a way to bare your soul in such a way for the benefit of the music. I wish you luck in feeling confident in your ability to inspire as an individual.
@GrimBTemplar Because she's not being orthodox at all, she's talking a lot of liberties with Bach. Not my favorite version, but a very interesting and a very beautiful one.
Im trying to play this right now and its SO difficult, but i have a question for those violin masters/teachers, etc. There are lots of interpretations of this piece, where everyone plays some parts differently. Is it okay to go with your feelings and play with emotions what you think is your style and your way of playing instead of ignoring the 'ways' that everyone else plays this piece?
@mapleric Definitely! There is no right or wrong interpretation- Bach didnt even give a tempo! Play to your heart and not your head because the chaconne is about life, all aspects - love, hate, sorrow, depression, death etc. so play on your own life experiences and dont even think about other peoples interpretations. Think about your own raw emotions and turn them into something beautiful! Good luck!!!! :)
@mapleric Like most things in life - first learn the rules, then break them when apporpriate. Eventually you must inject your own personality, heart and soul into the piece, but doing it tastefully is the challenge. Mind you, no matter what you do it will not be to everyone's taste!
Words can not express the emotional alignment that I have with this piece of music. The supreme execution of Bach's Masterpiece is one that can only be felt in the heart and soul of the listener. I accept the sorrow and struggle of this piece as one of his finest. In a world of "fast-food, fast advertisement, cheating and trickery," this piece brings such pure truth in tone and emotions that it brings me to tears.
There's always someone who can't stand something. I agree with guitarguy8908, why do these people watch videos they hate? If you want to see Hilary do something amazing, look up her playing Erlkonig. If you close your eyes, you'de thik she's playing 3 violins at once. You'll recognize it from Bugs Bunny.
74 people have absolutely no taste in music. Perhaps it is because they are completely tone deaf from listening to the likes of the village people and other forms of dicsco .They can not know the pleasure that it is to listen to Bach and hear it played perfectly. If I were one of the 74 who dislike this i would jam pencils in my ears so that i could not infect the world with my ignorant opinion,
Ooo I wish so much to had a video of this song... its more amazing when you see the violonist playing it. the emotions, the movment. everything. Just amazing. as the song
@Baroqueboy11 i dont like to listen to music written before 1965 generally. i'm a MAASSSSIVEEE steve reich, nico muhly and eric whitacre fan. i have no interest in old music anymore.
i want to hear new stuff. this stuff bores me, but i do understand without it music wouldnt be as it is today.
i just dont personally appreciate baroque, classical or romantic music. it's all about post-2000 for me.
"On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind."
I love Hilary Hahn's truly truly modern interpretation that has little to do with the barque style. Bach is so wonderful, that his music just stands out of time. An eternal gift to humanity.
This is much better than Perlam's , he presses the bow to hard on the string and is extremely out of tune. This is better because it is relaxing and sometimes intense.
my favorite piece by bach, ive never heard it the same twice, it brings remembrance of everything that encompasses myself and the life that instillsme to want to further my own existance, unfavorable as many eyes dare to reveal, life can be so extraordinary, without fullfillment, empty eyes, will always c the truth
I don't understand what people find wrong with this interpretation. Of course it's not going to be in "Bach's style" Hillary Hahn isn't a period performer, nor is she a Baroque violinist. She's not over-romanticizing.
A chaque fois que j'écoute cette musique je pleure et je ne sait même pas pourquoi...

it's as difficult on any instrument. on guitar the basses implied on the violin can be played and are.

this interpretation reaches the heart and soul of every individual that loves the sublime music of Master Bach !!!!
jorgeoscar1000 9 months ago
@mapleric

It's baroque, why is she using so much vibrato?
GrimBTemplar 10 months ago
@GrimBTemplar Because she's not being orthodox at all, she's talking a lot of liberties with Bach. Not my favorite version, but a very interesting and a very beautiful one.

Im trying to play this right now and its SO difficult, but i have a question for those violin masters/teachers, etc. There are lots of interpretations of this piece, where everyone plays some parts differently. Is it okay to go with your feelings and play with emotions what you think is your style and your way of playing instead of ignoring the 'ways' that everyone else plays this piece?
mapleric 10 months ago
@mapleric Definitely! There is no right or wrong interpretation- Bach didnt even give a tempo! Play to your heart and not your head because the chaconne is about life, all aspects - love, hate, sorrow, depression, death etc. so play on your own life experiences and dont even think about other peoples interpretations. Think about your own raw emotions and turn them into something beautiful! Good luck!!!! :)
haydo143 10 months ago 4
@mapleric Like most things in life - first learn the rules, then break them when apporpriate. Eventually you must inject your own personality, heart and soul into the piece, but doing it tastefully is the challenge. Mind you, no matter what you do it will not be to everyone's taste!

Hi all!

- Johannes Brahms, in a letter to Clara Schumann

I love Hilary Hahn's truly truly modern interpretation that has little to do with the barque style. Bach is so wonderful, that his music just stands out of time. An eternal gift to humanity.
halneufmille 1 year ago 24
This is much better than Perlam's , he presses the bow to hard on the string and is extremely out of tune. This is better because it is relaxing and sometimes intense.
Hilary Hahn is my favorite violinist!!!!:)

my favorite piece by bach, ive never heard it the same twice, it brings remembrance of everything that encompasses myself and the life that instillsme to want to further my own existance, unfavorable as many eyes dare to reveal, life can be so extraordinary, without fullfillment, empty eyes, will always c the truth
williamnloisf 1 year ago
I don't understand what people find wrong with this interpretation. Of course it's not going to be in "Bach's style" Hillary Hahn isn't a period performer, nor is she a Baroque violinist. She's not over-romanticizing.
