  • so awesome that this is the first search result for 'athens ga.' couldn't sum up the denizens of the town better myself.

  • The streets are lined with pot and leprechauns give you coffee every morning XD

  • He's so right.

  • I can't wait to see him at the 40-watt the 29th! Patton fuckin' rules!

  • looks like im movig to athens

  • He's such a pig in shit now. Hawt wifey, adorable baby, and is the only person I know who can still drink me under the table. Ass monkey.

  • maybe Athens is the only real city and the rest of the world is 'unreal'

  • @nactan Word.

  • I love living in Athens. :)

  • @smokinacs911 lol why?

  • he said rape based.

    I just died. hahahahahha

  • [It's no "rape based, economy in Athens,Georgia, AmenRa...]

  • So true.....from a sixth-generation Athenian.

  • HAHA! I love it. Even Patton actually could hardly believe what he said. "Did I just say a rape based economy?" His mind works in mysterious ways. This is what makes him AWESOME.

  • It's all true... which is why I will never leave.

  • he's awesome P.O.

  • So true. Lived there for 3 years, totally agree. I still like visiting, but I needed to travel and work elsewhere. But if there was one place in the world where I felt at home, it was that town.

  • Madison WI and Gainesville FL are also painfully similar to this.

  • Northampton, MA

  • i sing songs for sandwichs all the time , here in athens sandwiches taste like cotton candy and you can get stoned to the bajesus belt off of cotton candy

  • Great footage! I had only been to Athens a few times before I decided to move here and havent regretted it once. Its great here (but you do need to watch out for those coffee bringing leprechaunstheyre bad to go through your pockets!)

  • I was there for a couple of months and I can't believe I came back home. I was better living on the streets there than having a roof over my head in Ohio. Athens is awesome. MUSIC HATES YOU FUCKING ROCKS!

  • it's true. too late for me to leave.

  • i live in harrogate in yorkshire. basically the same thing, but duller, wetter, and a shitload colder. most people that leave harrogate come back in a couple of years with grey hair and a traumatised look in their eye.

  • This bit reminds me of my teachers at prep school. They all went to (fill in name of small, woodsy NH,VT,MA,ME,NY,CT liberal (highly stressed) arts college)), then to NOLS or some ridiculous non-profit that was set up to save four kids that aren't getting enough potassium in Botswana, then to grad school (preferably "in the city") so as to "mix" with the vast melting pot of said city then back to teach at prep school without ever really working anywhere. Hurrah for P. Oswalt.

  • I had the chance to go to this show but ended up missing it because of work. Such a bummer, a friend that went claimed it was the best stand-up show he'd ever seen. Patton was getting drunk off red wine the entire time and his set didn't end until something like 2 in the morning. By the end he was actually taking requests. Someone would shout, "Robert Evans!" or "Alvin & The Chipmunks!," and sure enough, he'd do the bit. Patton is fucking awesome and he speaks nothing but the truth about Athens.

  • iv been here my whole life, and i dont see a reason to leave. other than the preppy college kids that arent even from here, look down their noses at you like your some kind of dirty hippy or somethin.

  • Athens is indeed awesome, and most of the redneck bars are outside of town, so that keeps most of them out. Though in full disclosure, I've never been there in the day time, only at night while looking for booze and weed. Only saw a couple of leprechauns though. I think they're starting to gentrify the nearby towns.

  • The hipsters downtown are just as bad, if not worse, than the rednecks. They're cancerous.

  • @SaiRyo What's even more embarrassing is 40 year old hipsters.

  • I am about to move to Atlanta, but I am going to miss this fucking town. I lived here for about 5 years, but I only remember like 3 of them.

  • He's so right about what he's saying! Back in the late 80's to the early 90's I experienced so much laid back hippiness in Athens. I felt like I was in some kind pyschedelic realm.

  • Athens is such a great, cultured, and progressive town, I don't know what he's talking about.

  • That's EXACTLY what he's talking about. He's saying that Athens is way too good to be in America.

  • Did you just call Athens good?

    lmao

  • that's EXACTLY what Patton is talking about. It is REALLY nice to live here in Athens, Ga. but if you decide to leave Athens you have to realize that the rest of the world has too few places that are as sweet as this town is.

(thank god i was born, raised, and still live here.)

  • i get him. he ain't telling no lies. still, i love athens.

  • i worked at the georgia theatre when patton oswalt came and we actually had to kick him out while he was performing because he was really wasted and was making fun of all of the townies and things were about to get ugly

  • he was at the 40 watt during the video above. he also played at the ga theater (god rest its soul) and i also like patton's comedy, was merely sharing a funny and true anecdote.

  • just talking about another time in history

  • the only he thing he left out is all the furry animal costumes and marching band uniforms. we have a SHIT TON of those.

  • i live in athens!!! wooo!!

  • I live in Athens, too. He's right... it's strange, but he's right.

  • hah halarious. i live in athens this is so fucking true

  • that was really funny because i've been to Athens GA and Patton Oswalt is probably the greatest comic ever

  • ha ha i was just having the conversation with one of my friends about how magical athens was and how the air was even better there......so she sent me this lol so true

  • coreyforrestercomedy: the air is actually worse here! very bad air quality here, but everything else is great! for the most part :)

  • Yeah, It is great living in GA, right? Our great test scores, our crime rate and lets not forget that we have a fucking AQUARIUM NOW. How awesome is that shit. Pack your bags and head for Georgia everyone! I hope you like tobacco dip, because you'll most likely have it spat on you sometime while your here!

  • It's funny if you know what he's talking about

  • one of the funniest people alive

  • I miss you Athens!

  • fuck it, im moving to athens i swear to god

  • athens kicks ass. party town....

  • Thats so true!

Athens is the best town in the world, but its just surreal because the nations real cities dont have the same mindset.

I love athens, awesome fuckin college town

  • "Deliverance" was a fiction movie not a documentary... you know nothing about Georgia or Athens...Oswald was stoned...I know because I was at that 40 Watt show and smoked dank with the group in the back rooms... "another bit of trivia"....you will find the best herb and the most diverse music scene on the east coast all within walking distance...52 bars...half that have live music all within a mile...centurionsfaith thoughts are based on ignoranance..

  • In Athens your are one of the following. College Student. Hippy. Redneck. College student who didn't leave......

  • @embrodak77 But even most of the rednecks are nice.

  • Rape based economy...

    *applauds*

  • Also true for Oxford, MS and Chapel Hill, NC.

philippides - You must not be very well traveled...or maybe you are not well educated.

  • Oh, Zeldrea, I've encountered many a leprechaun while walking the woods behind your house. I'm staying up late this evening putting the finishing touches on your cotton-candy coat.

Don't be such a grumpy Sag....you may have lived here all of your life but you have certainly traveled around the globe more than others your age.

In the words of Squeezer and Trip "There is a tie that binds us to our homes"

  • Athens can be bad....come on guys. I guess I wouldn't know what the rest of the world is like b/c I've lived here all of my life.

  • rofl

  • Also true for Austin, Tx.

  • Athens kicks ASS!!

  • Can't deny it... it's all true.

  • I'm 36, live in Atlanta and still go to Athens every once in awhile to get wasted.

  • How did such a magical place end up in Georgia? It's South enough that I thought it was filled with rednecks.

  • it would depend where in GA :D

  • I didn't dig the South either until recently. Georgia is a beautiful state and there are almost no rednecks in Athens. They barely even have accents! You just can't rely on stereotypes.

  • True that, Athens really is a city that proves that the south can be sofisticated.

Heck, I can probaly find rednecks in the San Fransisco area too, just have to look for a trailer park, all depends on location.

  • ignorance...stop getting your philosophy from movies

  • I'd deny all of this if it wasn't true.

    But it is.

  • buddha's ghost penis is

    living in my cereal box

  • haha raped based economy

    Athens is the shit

  • He's only exaggerating a little bit ... Athens is a bubble dream city of goodness. I have sung there for a sandwich on more than one occasion. No leprechauns, though.

  • I beg to differ. People in Athens are awfully short. Ha Ha!

  • I want a cotton candy coat!

  • Awesome! Thanks for adding this!
