I guess doing this regularly helps clear out the gunk that can cause sinus infections, etc. It's best to buy a kit for this, though. You can make your own saline solution, but the ratio of salt to water needs to be exact, so I think it's best to just buy a package.

Yeah, I had to do that too...It does not hurt, but it feels...f'ed up :P
My left nose hole would pour liquid on the other one, while the right one would make it pour out of my mouth. It's pretty...funny sensation :P

Also, you need to use sterile or distilled water. We just boil tap water and let it cool to room temperature before mixing the saline solution.
