I like how symbian are trying very hard to keep up with the competition (especially as this new version of symbian is a very solid os) but I just don't think they can compete with the likeliness of android and iOS. The truth is that the only thing this phone has going for it is the amazing camera and photo editor.
@Tavernum The N8 would be much more awesome if just Symbian wasn't the OS Nokia is focusing on... Maemo 5, as an example, is a far more superior OS. It is the very foundation that makes the Nokia N900 such a great device, only judging by the OS. The device itself is like a wet dream for me, quite frankly. I'm not saying Symbian sucks, it is a very stable OS. But that's the only thing about it that's sufficient. The UI is very conservative and boring. Take a look at Maemo 5's UI, you'll see why.
From time 6:09 you can see that the screen changes *not* during the touch-slide motion but the widgets scroll (move) after a second. This is in a fresh phone. After a couple of months it is a much slower. Please be aware of this before buying.

@vKrazZed. I don't think that Apple actually invented it first, they just used it first in phone music library. Anyway Apple version is kinda simulating that somebody is browsing his real life lp-record collection but with Nokia it looks more like some picture viewing stuff inside music library. I think that Nokia got idea for that album cover flow from some Finnish tv proadcasting website where you can browse different tv programs with that effect.
i like nokia cos nokia knows how to make the quality phone rather than the hand set computer. Nokia gives us the functions which users really need and those functions are developed and proved by Nokia rather than some unknown third parties. No doubt I will sign this phone. Support Nokia, it will be sucide move to join windows.
Instead of ditching Symbian, they should work together with Google to develop the ultimate Symbian/Android OS so it can shit on iOS even more. That would be AWESOME - a cross between Symbian and Android.

However I read on official Nokia forums that Symbian^3.1 is coming out this summer (posted by an employee), so I don't even care about Symbian^4 that much as long as 3.1 is sufficient and fast enough on an N8. Fingers crossed that it becomes even better and as some say - it will run even faster on many phones, especially N8 and all others with a newer CPU/GPU, so I'm thinking lots of optimization.

@joonius89 Really? I've worked on it, I've worked on SO many HTC/Samsung android phones and even some HTC phones with Android 2.1/2.2 at times had some hiccups with their OS. Symbian^3 on this phone is not perfect (no OS is on any phone) but it's not slow, choppy and unresponsive :S Maybe your PC doesn't have the hardware to playback this video properly, hence the wrong perception you're having..
buy a nokia n8 on January 10, 2011 and I think that the symbian 3 is very unstable, restart the phone several times because the operating system freezes, that nokia send updates or something to correct this, the notification widget sometimes not the shows and I have off and on. turn the effect off-topic because it seems slow the phone.

@vvstorm2 According to various Nokia blogs, the first big improvement will be around April/May with a new browser and portrait Qwerty. The next in Oct/Nov will be an overhaul of the UI, making it more like Maemo5. (Why they couldn't have just kept up Maemo5 in the first place...)

This phone needs a major software upgrade. It's full of bugs and many parts of the OS (like the Web Browser) and almost useless. The hardware is great - it just needs decent software to back it up!
That's precisely the opposite of everything i've read in indipendant reviews from unbiased people who actually spend time using and reviewing cellular hardware and software.
In fact, i've yet to hear a negative comment about the new software, the primary reason for it's being is that earlier versions were buggy and needed updates to prevent certain problems.
@spidiq8 Early review models did apparently have unfinished software. But I've had the N8 for about a month and I would say the browser is definately in need of work. There are also bugs and inconsitencies in the OS which make it frustrating. But, as I said, hopefully these issues can be fixed with a software upgrade. Just my opinion of course :-).

That is not true! it runs like 5 games in the backround without any problem. Jeez, i know the menu swyping looks laggy but with the free shell 3.7 it looks just fine. Nokia shouldnt give the users too much power cuz most of them are undereducated. im what u may call a nerd lol. i think Htc evo 4g is the only phone that is faster than the n8 on the market now. if u look at the uppload date of this video you would notice that this was posted before the phone was released.
I don't understand this...in some videos or photos the green N8 seems really green, and in other (such as this one) it is more light green...what's it really like? I do prefer this one over the more clearly green pictures
Symbian is like a VCR... used to be great, but now completely out of date. You cant brush up a VCR to give blueray quality.... Anyone that has used a Android or Iphone knows exactly what I am talking about.

I love the OS! I believe you are a liar and have never touched an N8. When I first tried it it came naturally, remember to long press on items or go to the menu if you get stuck. Also there is a User guide built in, go to Options from the home screen its at the bottom.

Anyway Apple version is kinda simulating that somebody is browsing his real life lp-record collection but with Nokia it looks more like some picture viewing stuff inside music library. I think that Nokia got idea for that album cover flow from some Finnish tv proadcasting website where you can browse different tv programs with that effect.

However I read on official Nokia forums that Symbian^3.1 is coming out this summer (posted by an employee), so I don't even care about Symbian^4 that much as long as 3.1 is sufficient and fast enough on an N8. Fingers crossed that it becomes even better and as some say - it will run even faster on many phones, especially N8 and all others with a newer CPU/GPU, so I'm thinking lots of optimization.

@joonius89 Really? I've worked on it, I've worked on SO many HTC/Samsung android phones and even some HTC phones with Android 2.1/2.2 at times had some hiccups with their OS. Symbian^3 on this phone is not perfect (no OS is on any phone) but it's not slow, choppy and unresponsive :S Maybe your PC doesn't have the hardware to playback this video properly, hence the wrong perception you're having..

buy a nokia n8 on January 10, 2011 and I think that the symbian 3 is very unstable, restart the phone several times because the operating system freezes, that nokia send updates or something to correct this, the notification widget sometimes not the shows and I have off and on. turn the effect off-topic because it seems slow the phone.

@vvstorm2 According to various Nokia blogs, the first big improvement will be around April/May with a new browser and portrait Qwerty. The next in Oct/Nov will be an overhaul of the UI, making it more like Maemo5. (Why they couldn't have just kept up Maemo5 in the first place...)

Before you answer I want to say that SE needs to come back home(symbian) and update Vivaz and or Satio to symbian^3 if possible. Symbian is as much SE baby as it is Nokia baby. Comes August, I will make my decision on wether switch my allegiance to Nokia (which I never thought I would) or stick with SE and start using android. Hopefully, SE will not subject me to this dilemma.

This phone needs a major software upgrade. It's full of bugs and many parts of the OS (like the Web Browser) and almost useless. The hardware is great - it just needs decent software to back it up!

That's precisely the opposite of everything i've read in indipendant reviews from unbiased people who actually spend time using and reviewing cellular hardware and software.
In fact, i've yet to hear a negative comment about the new software, the primary reason for it's being is that earlier versions were buggy and needed updates to prevent certain problems.

@spidiq8 Early review models did apparently have unfinished software. But I've had the N8 for about a month and I would say the browser is definately in need of work. There are also bugs and inconsitencies in the OS which make it frustrating. But, as I said, hopefully these issues can be fixed with a software upgrade. Just my opinion of course :-).

I love the OS! I believe you are a liar and have never touched an N8. When I first tried it it came naturally, remember to long press on items or go to the menu if you get stuck. Also there is a User guide built in, go to Options from the home screen its at the bottom.

Is logical and very simple to use. It was so simple that everyone wanted to copy it back in the days.
