  • " ....And Then They Were GENE$I$"

  • Comment removed

  • Ovvio: erano e rimangono i migliori.

Sure: they were and remain the best. I've grown up feeding bread and Genesis...

  • Gabriel always pure Genius. Opening vocal comments.... Was he doing Winston Churchill!?

  • Best fucking song ever written.

  • click here: 3:39 and see Tommy Iommi ^^

  • the best song of the best band

  • It was always Tony's train-set, but when they rocked, they fucking rocked!

  • great live version, the instrumental section has so much more 'punch' that its ridiculous. A perfect example that often, the band had a better sound live than on record, as Collins always complained

  • Love the 2:50 explosion

  • You wouldn't be able to watch this live today. Everyone would be talking over it. No-one seems to be capable of just shutting up and listening to the music these days.

  • @scottytrotter AMEN!!! (and I'm not a truly religious man by nature)... I stopped going to shows because of this, and as a musician, I hate it when people are holding conversations during a performance. The worst invention ever was the cellular phone during concerts. Almost brought me to bring a cell phone Jammer with me to gigs.

In the Early Genesis footage though, you notice everyone sitting quietly absorbing the mystical tales of Peter the Mysterious Minstrel and his Troupe of Troubadours.

  • @scottytrotter There were people talking at the Musical Box show. so I agree!!! I wanted to smack them.

  • Beatifull...

  • fantastici: questi erano i Genesis ! (diffidare dalle imitazioni)

    claudio

  • Does anyone know if this was ever available on vinyl? This is real heavy, complex music that they just seem to nail. Mind blowing actually.

  • @gweflj Of course. This was, or is, on the album "Selling England by the Pound" from '73.

  • @Hamring Cheers Hamring. This live version or a studio version?

  • @gweflj Pleasure! this here is live footage and audio. Be sure to check out more Genesis. They have tons of great material.

  • Flack jackets on folks... here comes the Mellotron... :0)

  • the genesis of rock called progresive..........thanks for post this video

  • To be able to pull up live performances of songs I adored is technology at work. A shame Genesis didn't realize how powerful video would become. We all deserve to see them visually. I'll take what I can get. Amazing music. Amazing theater.

  • man, Tony Banks looks like he had to work overtime...jumping from one keyboard to another.

  • What the hell is Phil blowing into at the end of this song?

  • @ScottRighteous netti-pot ?/! ;-)

    ]

  • Magic magic magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, real music... Amazing. Perfect. Beautiful

  • It has always amazed me that the only live performance of this song that was recorded and/or survived from the time of the album's release is (apparently) this very poor quality recording. What were they thinking? You'd think there would have been someone around who knew what they were doing when this was filmed and recorded. It's a real pity. I'd love to see Peter Gabriel do with this album what Roger Waters is currently doing with The Wall.

  • @brucenator That would be amazing, and actually turn it into a movie like The Wall. Only problem is not enough people know The Lamb for him to get much money out of it. I don't even know who he would find to try and play it with him. Bruford would be a great pick again drummingwise since Phil cannot drum anymore.

  • @DavidKinner Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is from Selling England by the Pound, not The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. But in any case, you're probably right, there's not enough money in it, so that might be why it hasn't been done. Bruford would definitely be the obvious choice for drummer.

  • @brucenator I know that, but sorry since The Lamb, and The Wall are both huge concepts I just assumed you meant The Lamb. I never liked Phil's version of Genesis after the two actually very good progressive albums he put out as lead, but he was one hell of a drummer with them in the Peter Gabriel years. He is very underrated. So many people act like he is amazing based on his pop stuff in that respect he is overrated, but I think his drumming is very underrated.

  • @DavidKinner I was only ten years old when SEBTP came out. Two of my favorite albums growing up were SEBTP and one of the Collins-led albums you're referring to: Trick of the Tail. When Abacab came out, I couldn't believe this was even the same band! I have to agree, the early Genesis albums are a testament to Collin's greatness as a drummer. I also have to laugh whenever I hear how Eddie Van Halen "invented" hammer-on/pull-offs, when you have Giant Hogweed recorded six years before Eruption.

  • subliminal !

  • Gabriel is stunning here

  • they are doing a great way of music today. but "Genesis" with Peter Gabriel wonderful, is bombastic, is special - just like Gabriel solo!

  • Aww, Peter forgot some of the words toward the end. No worries though!

  • now why did genesis become a fag band in the 80's?

  • @Jonasboll that's because phil collins became the singer/band leader after peter gabriel the band

  • @15Roter True, Collins is the root of all evil.

  • @Jonasboll Money.

  • I was 13 when i first listened to it

! That voice and the music changed my life !

Its how they were so imaginative and created such power and beauty . They had a magic . After an impressive melody , another one whould come and another . They connected

To each other through litlle precious silences

Or a flute . Kind of medievel on

    Another planet !

  • Great job Tommy, thank you!

  • I'm glad Peter Gabriel got out of Genesis, Genesis really doesn't suit him, his voice is better suited for something more than the weird themes of progressive music.

  • @esca8652 Muzak without Gabriel.

  • @jerrygreg2 Did you just call Trick of the Tail and Wind and the Wuthering Musak?

    Los Endos is in there,

  • @767fife Good point.

  • Wow ! I was there, seat in the middle. I buy my first drums the week after....thanx again

  • Wow, you were at Shepperton? Can you remember if they did other songs besides the 5 on the video? The 5 are Watcher of the Skies, Dancing w/Moonlit Knight, IKWIL, The Musical Box, & Supper's Ready - were there others? Thanks in advance

  • É Tommy...I saw the band....at the arena of University of Montreal QC (2500 seats there)l. Gentle Giant was there about 1 month before and Pink Floyd and 10 CC , Supertramp (Crime of the century) the same years...Man ...a dream !!!!!!! Sorry !!!! but for the songs....I think they play the same list. I check out for you....ciao!!!

  • @Tommygun1028 Thank you for this beatiful music. This is mito for universal time. Again thank you of un italian friends

  • @cochise3011 grazie!

  • @cochise3011 "The high office of the President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the American's freedom and before I leave office, I must inform the citizen of this plight."

    ~JFK

  • OMG - why did I not ever see them? They are so crazy............. This is intense. Imagine doing that night after night on tour?

  • lyrics, music, interpretation, every detail is fantastic in this song, almost impossible to do better music, although, they did the lamb afer this. genesis, the best.

  • @sacamuelas37 totally agreed, Genesis is my favorite band. if you want to check out some more, check my channel.

  • And before asda.......

  • The UNIVERSAL QUESTON a man might ask himself...unles he is thing...and beast of burden and unmentioned...

Well...a lot of it ...is RIGHT HERE.

I am Bernard De Schepper, if that's a matter anyway.

  • Skoro zdjales swoj komentarz (przeslij mi go na moj Inbox, to 'sie ustosunkuje') to daruj sobie te idiotyczne bluzgi.

Przeslij mi Twoj komencik to pogadamy. 'Wszyscy inni' mieli by radoche...

  • Jaki jest sens pisac komentarze, skoro je sie zaraz zdejmuje? Ten ostatni, KP121, nie byl taaaak beznadziejnie durny. Troche ten Twoj polski niezdarny, ale troche poczytaj i... bedziesz OK.

    Szczesliwego Nowego Kaca

I sobie pare dales?

    You need immediate psychiatric attention.

  • ...from the times when man made..MUSIC

  • Fantastici...

  • mmmmmgood

  • EXCELENTE

  • Gabriel had what is normally referred to, as a reversed Mohawk haircut.

He cut his hair short in order to play the role of Rael; the main character from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album - which Genesis performed in its entirety in 1975.

He grew it long again ( but not as long as in this clip ) later on.

He now looks like his father did. Grey and balding. lol

  • WOW! never new Genesis rocked out like this. only knew the 80's 90's pop stuff. i like it. has early Rush feel to it , so has alot of the old Genesis i'm hearing for the first time. AND they know how to play thier instruments. i'm impressed. this is good shit

  • love the mellotron <3

  • Look at Peter's hair. Jesus, that's gorgeous.

Why did he have to cut it, whyyyyyy (I'm a girl and I'd kill to have hair like that!! What was his secret???)

  • I have similar hair, without the funny parting! Maybe thats the secret! Cut a fuuny parting! :)!!!

  • lol

Well, I also liked it before he ever did the reverse mohawk thing. It was equally pretty. It just looks...shiny and silky! If you have the secret to that, pray tell ;)

  • Funny, Claudiall. I'm way older than you and Peter's hair here reminds me of my own at about the same time this video was shot - same length, too. Women who cut my hair would usually comment on it, the curl, the shine, the colour. The secret? Choose your parents well and keep it clean - that's all I did. Luck of the draw. I miss it now, especially the parts where it doesn't grow anymore.

  • Comment removed

  • Really, he was balding so early on? What a pity, he had such beautiful hair.

  • yes, you can see that he actually cuts it off a few years later then even goes as far as to buzz his head! When he did have hair it looked very nice.

  • The pinnacle of one of the finest progressive band from England in the early 70s

  • This sounds/looks good. Thanks to the folks who worked on it.

  • Gorden Browns' anthem?

  • rickobear-good question-i think phil's playing a hooka!

along with bill bruford he's my favorite drummer

  • Oh I love Peter costums! :)

  • what is Phil playing at 8:37??

  • A chillum??

  • I would sure like to see a genesis guitar hero pack would be good for some of the younger crowd to get some steve hackett in their ears. Cindy

  • ha!!! ;) i agree!

  • I´m disagree because many stupid kids will like genesis and the wouldn´t understand their lyrics and the would ruin the spirit og genesis songs

  • maybe younger people just need more people willing to to take the time out and explain the lyrics to them. Any way you look at it referring to them as "stupid" isn't going to do anything but discourage their interest in great music like this

  • 4:15 through 4:43 ..... it simply gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. those lyrics are so haunting.

There's a fat old lady outside the saloon.

Laying down the credit cards, she plays fortune.

The deck is uneven right from the start,

and all of their hands are playing a part.

    wow.

  • i could do without gabriel's stupid costumes though. seriously. i don't even bother showing people old genesis videos because for somebody who isn't already a fan, there's no way they can take it seriously... especially some of the ridiculous things he wore during the lamb tour.

peter what were you thinking/high on?

  • rael style is superb :D

  • so, do you also dislike David Bowie, Alice Cooper, etc?

  • what an amazing band! easily my favorite, and this is easily from my favorite era of the band. these guys are probably the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century, then hackett left.

imo, most of the brilliance from the gabriel era comes from tony banks... the guy is one in a million when it comes to keyboards.

i'll take his craftsmanship over a "keyboard shredder" like jordan rudess any day. tony banks will be appreciated in 50 years, and nobody will have even heard of rudess.

  • good point! ;)

  • No band can lose a talent like Peter Gabriel and not be changed. But Genesis was a class act as long as Steve Hackett was in the band.

  • Someone came up to me at school and told me Gabriel had left. Felt bereaved for a month!

    Then I got a life...

Still got all this on my Ipod. Brilliant!

  • sta canzon è pop o cess mammama.

  • copertone

  • To go back in time to see the great performances of yesterday.... wait, I just did, right here! The studio album is amazing, but "live" is really a treasure.

    Thanks for the video post!!!!

  • The Flute is reminiscent of Ian Andersen.

The loss of Gabriel hurt the band and also Gabriel's creativity went off on a tangent.

This is a band that needs a reunion and to write more music (if they have any left to give).

  • I mean Jethro Tull was around a couple of years before Genesis, but I don't think Gabriel was influenced by Ian Anderson when it came to the flute.

  • I wonder if gabriel gets embarrassed when (if) he watches old clips.

Nevertheless, he was a fine performer who added much to english rock.

    thanks

  • Tommygun! You are amazing! Thank you for doing this. It's an excellent restoration.

  • Sorry, I don't don't mean to reain into your parade, but the (currently) best painstaking restoration of the Shepperton 16mm footage has been done by the fine people of MeeksGenesis. Check the Web.

  • alice didn't borrow from bowie, alice was alice in the 70s. bowie was the borrower, especially later. he'd jump on anything coming.

  • the moment where it kicks back in @ 4.16 is pure genius, what a riff!

  • I always liked that part too. Genesis had many genial moments with Peter

  • PROPHECY LOST

  • Chewing through their wimpy dreams they eat without a sound.......

    Amazing album

  • can you tell me where my country lies?......

    great start....

  • Peter is the bestest! :) Love him and not stinky old collins!!!!

  • Hold it please! Peter is great, but Phil is not stinky and not old. For once he wasa drummer and backing vocal man during the 1971-1975 gabriel era.

Just to recall: "Cinema Show!!!" That's Phil - oh and that high voice in The Lamb "He's such a fine dancer!!!" Not to mention the high octave in "Carpet Crawl" - That's Phil! - Strinky? So you are saying they sould have found another drummer/backing vocalist? Get your homework done first, then you talk.

  • amen

  • sn degli dei

  • No reason to slam Green Day.

RESPECT Gabriel, Joe Jackson AND Green Day!

    All different. All talented.

  • Another unique voice - Peter Gabriel. I absolutely love him because he's so innovative and not afraid to attempt new approaches to music!

  • When Peter Gabriel leaves the band, began the final of Genesis. And the end came when Steve Hackett did the same.

I Love this song, this album, this group... with everyone in his own place

  • 12 and 14 years old. God bless you both. Good to hear. Keep searching for great music like this, it's timeless. I was turned on to Genesis, at 12 to 14 years old too, in the early 1970's too. Good memories for you.

  • You're watching living Music history here folks. One of the finest era's in Rock. Never to be seen again.

  • I saw them in San Francisco on this tour. It was amazing. Probably my favorite show of all time.

  • best vid ever! My one and only fav band!!!! Live forever Genisis. Peter is wayyy better than Phil!

  • best intro ever.

    best song ever.

    best band ever.

Gabriel totally owns Collins, he is just a good drummer. Genesis died when he started to lead. No doubts.

  • YESSS U ARE TOTALLY RIGHT!

  • i agree with you....collins stole all the progressive to the genesis and he introduced the pop....then they died

  • You might aswel have a go at peter for his solo albums and Mike and the mechanics. The progressive era wasn't ever going to last, their interests moved on - peter gabriel or no peter gabriel.

  • You are totally right, Collins la re cago, le puso ese maldito estilo romantico pop :@

  • i love love love Peter. best person in the world

  • Im 12 and my dad thinks genesis is the best band in the world. I'm starting to like that old stuff. :)

  • i have the same situation. I think Genesis is great

  • i am 12 and my dad is like yours and i love all this stuff:)

  • same here!!! but im 14

  • There are few albums that makes me wonder how can man make such music. Selling England by the Pound is one of them..

  • I was born in a wrong decade.Anyone who saw Genesis live at that time has the greatest luck on Earth.

  • I see : phil collins drums and ?? Who parols ?

  • Peter Gabriel, no? duh

  • notice phil collins facial expression when

peter used to rant his intros

  • I don't know why but the live versions of their songs always usually sound better than the studio version except for this song where both are good. Maybe I'm just used to hearing the live versions. Another good costume, another good song and another good clip.

  • I wish society would let me dress like Peter Gabriel all the time.

  • I would let you :)

  • Don't think society let him dress that way either, he simply did it because he is the sort of person who transcends normal social standards and lives entirely in his own world. Good for him! If you wanna dress like him, do it, but better to dress like 'you' instead, if you know what I mean.:)

  • something happened with Selling England - call it the planets were lined up or the gods were in a good mood... like Dark Side... or Abbey Road... And no, not near the same without Petey...

  • "It's called: Dancing with the moonlit Kn*íght"

  • What does Peter mean when he says, "I am the voice of Britain before the Daily Express"?

  • no idea

  • No idea about the Daily Express, but you have great videos!Six Hours Live makes a great holiday gift.I highly recommend it to all.

  • The Daily Express is a tabloid newspaper in the UK.

I'm surprised I understood that reference, since I'm American. It's even funnier to me because I know it's a tabloid newspaper. O_o

  • Something like, "I am in the English Channel, it is called exceedingly..." Don't know what that last word is.

  • "I am in the English Channel, it is cold, exceedingly wet...."

  • I believe he says "it is cold and exceedingly wet"

  • here's a starting point for you: the song deals with peter's opposition to england doing away with their version of the american gold standard. i wont hold your hand through the specifics. this is the internet, use wikipedia or google already folks! :)

  • Gotta love that Mellotron. This sounds pretty good, actually, considering how old the recording is.

  • awsome voice of peter... and he beginns without hearing a tone... respect.

  • one of the bests songs ever

  • i totally agree

  • I am the voice of Britain before the Daily Express

  • Thanks for all your vids! Genesis forever !

  • And Tommy, you've done an excellent job with the restoration of this performance! Especially with the audio, of course!

  • I was there, it was great. Brings back great memories. Thanks.

  • Did they do any other songs besides Watcher of the Skies, Dancing w/the Moonlit Knight, I Know What I Like, The Musical Box, Supper's Ready?

  • The fantastic Cinema Show, Battle of Epping Rorest and they were still doing The Knife as a last encore.

  • omg ur old

  • this is a good live feed. i wish he was there for the turn it on again tour. that would be so awesome if him and steve hackett did the tour with them.

  • Peter said that rejoin Genesis BEFORE 2008, so maybe after he gets his next solo project out of the way, he'll re-join. (Thus also meaning Steve can rejoin, making the reunion complete...but now that I think about it, I wouldn't care if Steve didn't rejoin, just Peter is enough for me! :P But hopefully he would as well)

  • Where did you hear that?

  • Peter Gabriel looks like a wizard or a shaman in this video! he's the man.

  • Well, I can not really agree that Gabriel is God - perhaps it happens that he ist not existing then? That would be terrifying! :)

Just joking - - Peter Gabriel for ever & ever. I love the way he is looking and singing here and DWTMK is a really, really great song taken from my favourite Genesis LP!

  • Maravilhoso!

  • infatti!

  • E' questione di gusti... i + belli dei PF x me sono the wall, wish you were here e the piper at the gates of dawn!! e poi the wall, essendo un concept album, va preso nel suo complesso... respect
