You wouldn't be able to watch this live today. Everyone would be talking over it. No-one seems to be capable of just shutting up and listening to the music these days.
@scottytrotter AMEN!!! (and I'm not a truly religious man by nature)... I stopped going to shows because of this, and as a musician, I hate it when people are holding conversations during a performance. The worst invention ever was the cellular phone during concerts. Almost brought me to bring a cell phone Jammer with me to gigs.
In the Early Genesis footage though, you notice everyone sitting quietly absorbing the mystical tales of Peter the Mysterious Minstrel and his Troupe of Troubadours.
To be able to pull up live performances of songs I adored is technology at work. A shame Genesis didn't realize how powerful video would become. We all deserve to see them visually. I'll take what I can get. Amazing music. Amazing theater.
It has always amazed me that the only live performance of this song that was recorded and/or survived from the time of the album's release is (apparently) this very poor quality recording. What were they thinking? You'd think there would have been someone around who knew what they were doing when this was filmed and recorded. It's a real pity. I'd love to see Peter Gabriel do with this album what Roger Waters is currently doing with The Wall.
@brucenator That would be amazing, and actually turn it into a movie like The Wall. Only problem is not enough people know The Lamb for him to get much money out of it. I don't even know who he would find to try and play it with him. Bruford would be a great pick again drummingwise since Phil cannot drum anymore.
@DavidKinner Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is from Selling England by the Pound, not The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. But in any case, you're probably right, there's not enough money in it, so that might be why it hasn't been done. Bruford would definitely be the obvious choice for drummer.
@brucenator I know that, but sorry since The Lamb, and The Wall are both huge concepts I just assumed you meant The Lamb. I never liked Phil's version of Genesis after the two actually very good progressive albums he put out as lead, but he was one hell of a drummer with them in the Peter Gabriel years. He is very underrated. So many people act like he is amazing based on his pop stuff in that respect he is overrated, but I think his drumming is very underrated.
@DavidKinner I was only ten years old when SEBTP came out. Two of my favorite albums growing up were SEBTP and one of the Collins-led albums you're referring to: Trick of the Tail. When Abacab came out, I couldn't believe this was even the same band! I have to agree, the early Genesis albums are a testament to Collin's greatness as a drummer. I also have to laugh whenever I hear how Eddie Van Halen "invented" hammer-on/pull-offs, when you have Giant Hogweed recorded six years before Eruption.
Its how they were so imaginative and created such power and beauty . They had a magic . After an impressive melody , another one whould come and another . They connected
I'm glad Peter Gabriel got out of Genesis, Genesis really doesn't suit him, his voice is better suited for something more than the weird themes of progressive music.

Gabriel had what is normally referred to, as a reversed Mohawk haircut.
He cut his hair short in order to play the role of Rael; the main character from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album - which Genesis performed in its entirety in 1975.
He grew it long again ( but not as long as in this clip ) later on.
He now looks like his father did. Grey and balding. lol
WOW! never new Genesis rocked out like this. only knew the 80's 90's pop stuff. i like it. has early Rush feel to it , so has alot of the old Genesis i'm hearing for the first time. AND they know how to play thier instruments. i'm impressed. this is good shit
Well, I also liked it before he ever did the reverse mohawk thing. It was equally pretty. It just looks...shiny and silky! If you have the secret to that, pray tell ;)
Funny, Claudiall. I'm way older than you and Peter's hair here reminds me of my own at about the same time this video was shot - same length, too. Women who cut my hair would usually comment on it, the curl, the shine, the colour. The secret? Choose your parents well and keep it clean - that's all I did. Luck of the draw. I miss it now, especially the parts where it doesn't grow anymore.
maybe younger people just need more people willing to to take the time out and explain the lyrics to them. Any way you look at it referring to them as "stupid" isn't going to do anything but discourage their interest in great music like this
i could do without gabriel's stupid costumes though. seriously. i don't even bother showing people old genesis videos because for somebody who isn't already a fan, there's no way they can take it seriously... especially some of the ridiculous things he wore during the lamb tour.
what an amazing band! easily my favorite, and this is easily from my favorite era of the band. these guys are probably the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century, then hackett left.
imo, most of the brilliance from the gabriel era comes from tony banks... the guy is one in a million when it comes to keyboards.
i'll take his craftsmanship over a "keyboard shredder" like jordan rudess any day. tony banks will be appreciated in 50 years, and nobody will have even heard of rudess.
To go back in time to see the great performances of yesterday.... wait, I just did, right here! The studio album is amazing, but "live" is really a treasure.
Sorry, I don't don't mean to reain into your parade, but the (currently) best painstaking restoration of the Shepperton 16mm footage has been done by the fine people of MeeksGenesis. Check the Web.
Hold it please! Peter is great, but Phil is not stinky and not old. For once he wasa drummer and backing vocal man during the 1971-1975 gabriel era.
Just to recall: "Cinema Show!!!" That's Phil - oh and that high voice in The Lamb "He's such a fine dancer!!!" Not to mention the high octave in "Carpet Crawl" - That's Phil! - Strinky? So you are saying they sould have found another drummer/backing vocalist? Get your homework done first, then you talk.
12 and 14 years old. God bless you both. Good to hear. Keep searching for great music like this, it's timeless. I was turned on to Genesis, at 12 to 14 years old too, in the early 1970's too. Good memories for you.
You might aswel have a go at peter for his solo albums and Mike and the mechanics. The progressive era wasn't ever going to last, their interests moved on - peter gabriel or no peter gabriel.
I don't know why but the live versions of their songs always usually sound better than the studio version except for this song where both are good. Maybe I'm just used to hearing the live versions. Another good costume, another good song and another good clip.
Don't think society let him dress that way either, he simply did it because he is the sort of person who transcends normal social standards and lives entirely in his own world. Good for him! If you wanna dress like him, do it, but better to dress like 'you' instead, if you know what I mean.:)
something happened with Selling England - call it the planets were lined up or the gods were in a good mood... like Dark Side... or Abbey Road... And no, not near the same without Petey...
here's a starting point for you: the song deals with peter's opposition to england doing away with their version of the american gold standard. i wont hold your hand through the specifics. this is the internet, use wikipedia or google already folks! :)
Grandi i Genesis invidio tutti coloro che hanno avuto la fortuna di vederli nei 70...ed io che ne ho 22,posso solo godermi questi video consapevole che vederli dal vivo e tutt'altra storia.
this is a good live feed. i wish he was there for the turn it on again tour. that would be so awesome if him and steve hackett did the tour with them.
Peter said that rejoin Genesis BEFORE 2008, so maybe after he gets his next solo project out of the way, he'll re-join. (Thus also meaning Steve can rejoin, making the reunion complete...but now that I think about it, I wouldn't care if Steve didn't rejoin, just Peter is enough for me! :P But hopefully he would as well)
Well, I can not really agree that Gabriel is God - perhaps it happens that he ist not existing then? That would be terrifying! :)
Just joking - - Peter Gabriel for ever & ever. I love the way he is looking and singing here and DWTMK is a really, really great song taken from my favourite Genesis LP!
gli album dei floyd fino a wish you were here (compreso, ovviamente) e quelli successivi c'è un abisso. di the wall si salvano non più di 5 pezzi. Comfortably numb cantata dal vivo da van morrison è di quel livello.
E' questione di gusti... i + belli dei PF x me sono the wall, wish you were here e the piper at the gates of dawn!! e poi the wall, essendo un concept album, va preso nel suo complesso... respect

The Flute is reminiscent of Ian Andersen.
The loss of Gabriel hurt the band and also Gabriel's creativity went off on a tangent.
This is a band that needs a reunion and to write more music (if they have any left to give).

I mean Jethro Tull was around a couple of years before Genesis, but I don't think Gabriel was influenced by Ian Anderson when it came to the flute.

Peter is the bestest! :) Love him and not stinky old collins!!!!
checkcheck56 3 years ago
Hold it please! Peter is great, but Phil is not stinky and not old. For once he wasa drummer and backing vocal man during the 1971-1975 gabriel era.
Just to recall: "Cinema Show!!!" That's Phil - oh and that high voice in The Lamb "He's such a fine dancer!!!" Not to mention the high octave in "Carpet Crawl" - That's Phil! - Strinky? So you are saying they sould have found another drummer/backing vocalist? Get your homework done first, then you talk.

No reason to slam Green Day.
RESPECT Gabriel, Joe Jackson AND Green Day!
All different. All talented.

Another unique voice - Peter Gabriel. I absolutely love him because he's so innovative and not afraid to attempt new approaches to music!

When Peter Gabriel leaves the band, began the final of Genesis. And the end came when Steve Hackett did the same.
I Love this song, this album, this group... with everyone in his own place

12 and 14 years old. God bless you both. Good to hear. Keep searching for great music like this, it's timeless. I was turned on to Genesis, at 12 to 14 years old too, in the early 1970's too. Good memories for you.

You're watching living Music history here folks. One of the finest era's in Rock. Never to be seen again.

I saw them in San Francisco on this tour. It was amazing. Probably my favorite show of all time.

best vid ever! My one and only fav band!!!! Live forever Genisis. Peter is wayyy better than Phil!

best intro ever.
best song ever.
best band ever.
Gabriel totally owns Collins, he is just a good drummer. Genesis died when he started to lead. No doubts.

YESSS U ARE TOTALLY RIGHT!
checkcheck56 3 years ago
i agree with you....collins stole all the progressive to the genesis and he introduced the pop....then they died
gaccino 3 years ago
You might aswel have a go at peter for his solo albums and Mike and the mechanics. The progressive era wasn't ever going to last, their interests moved on - peter gabriel or no peter gabriel.

You are totally right, Collins la re cago, le puso ese maldito estilo romantico pop :@

There are few albums that makes me wonder how can man make such music. Selling England by the Pound is one of them..

I was born in a wrong decade.Anyone who saw Genesis live at that time has the greatest luck on Earth.

I don't know why but the live versions of their songs always usually sound better than the studio version except for this song where both are good. Maybe I'm just used to hearing the live versions. Another good costume, another good song and another good clip.

I wish society would let me dress like Peter Gabriel all the time.
simargl 4 years ago 3
I would let you :)
Arryn77 4 years ago
Don't think society let him dress that way either, he simply did it because he is the sort of person who transcends normal social standards and lives entirely in his own world. Good for him! If you wanna dress like him, do it, but better to dress like 'you' instead, if you know what I mean.:)

something happened with Selling England - call it the planets were lined up or the gods were in a good mood... like Dark Side... or Abbey Road... And no, not near the same without Petey...

No idea about the Daily Express, but you have great videos!Six Hours Live makes a great holiday gift.I highly recommend it to all.

The Daily Express is a tabloid newspaper in the UK.
I'm surprised I understood that reference, since I'm American. It's even funnier to me because I know it's a tabloid newspaper. O_o

greeneyes4005 3 years ago
here's a starting point for you: the song deals with peter's opposition to england doing away with their version of the american gold standard. i wont hold your hand through the specifics. this is the internet, use wikipedia or google already folks! :)

this is a good live feed. i wish he was there for the turn it on again tour. that would be so awesome if him and steve hackett did the tour with them.
tehbassplayer 4 years ago
Peter said that rejoin Genesis BEFORE 2008, so maybe after he gets his next solo project out of the way, he'll re-join. (Thus also meaning Steve can rejoin, making the reunion complete...but now that I think about it, I wouldn't care if Steve didn't rejoin, just Peter is enough for me! :P But hopefully he would as well)
tenchimasake 4 years ago
Where did you hear that?

Peter Gabriel looks like a wizard or a shaman in this video! he's the man.
danieldovico 4 years ago
Well, I can not really agree that Gabriel is God - perhaps it happens that he ist not existing then? That would be terrifying! :)
Just joking - - Peter Gabriel for ever & ever. I love the way he is looking and singing here and DWTMK is a really, really great song taken from my favourite Genesis LP!

Beh, The Wall dei Pink Floyd è del '79!
TheLore 4 years ago
infatti!
gli album dei floyd fino a wish you were here (compreso, ovviamente) e quelli successivi c'è un abisso. di the wall si salvano non più di 5 pezzi. Comfortably numb cantata dal vivo da van morrison è di quel livello.
massimotube 4 years ago
E' questione di gusti... i + belli dei PF x me sono the wall, wish you were here e the piper at the gates of dawn!! e poi the wall, essendo un concept album, va preso nel suo complesso... respect
TheLore 4 years ago
