  • as MAGNIFICENT as this PERFORMANCE is the ONLY thing to comment on is a hairdo? THE SUPREMES + DARIN = SUPERB!

  • Bobby Darin>The Suprememes, but The Supremes are outstaning. I think Diana sounded really good and has the class to contrast with Bobby's voice. Bobby Darin is the most versatile music artist ever IMO. He sang rock n roll, traditional pop, country, folk even r&b. As well as being a songwriter, a fantastic drummer, academy award nominated actor, impressionist, guitarist, pianist, producer...Bobby Darin!!

  • This seemed like it was very nice special. Hopefully it's released on DVD sometime.

  • It must be nice to be able to sing with Bobby Darin, but then again it must be nice to be able to sing with the Supremes. Great talent and class ladies and gentleman.

  • Great performance by the girls.... I agree that Flo's voice was made for Broadway.

  • i wish people would stop pitting these girls against each other. this performance is classic. all three were perfect. diana trying too hard?? florence carrying the song?? mary finger snapping?? i wish this special would get remastered and released on dvd. i would buy it in an instant.

  • When this man turns around at 1:07 I am taken to another world. Simply phenomenal...you have to have profound talent in order to do this after soooo many years of being gone..thank you Mr. Darin, you are remarkable.

  • U hear Flo at 1:30? (Well thru the whole damn song) Thats a voice made for Broadway tunes right there

  • How "lucky" could a guy get to sing with the Supremes.

  • The singing this, go yall

  • So Supremes1964, You Know something Berry Gordy didn't?, He's worth a over 300 Million, How are you doing?

  • Diana tries too hard while Flo (Voice) just rides the song so smoothly. Diana Ross a back up singer .....bet she cried to Berry Gordy. THE SUPREMES ROCK this SHOW.

  • It's Mary Wilson's Finger Snapping that makes this a "Stellar Performance" Diana just didn't have that kind of ability LOL!!!!

  • I love the way the Supremes sing this, especially Flo. Her voice forces the other two to step their game up on this particular song.

  • So good!

  • Florence really held down that unison, she really was the "soul" of the group

  • The Supremes' vocal blend is just impeccable.

    Three very different voices:

    Diana - Light, bright, Mezzo-soprano

Florence - Soprano (with very powerful mid-chest range)

    Mary - Smoky contralto

YET, when the three combine, they just sound like one, powerful, united voice.

  • Shortly after this Flo was fired - in part for being "too fat" - somebody needed to get their glasses fixed!

  • @Chutson353 AMENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

  • Just wonderful..... Love it......

  • kool!

  • From Rogers & Hart Today, 1967. Starring Count Basie, Bobby Darin, Supremes, Mamas & Papas and Petula Clark. Available on bootleg, but wish someone would restore and reissue this in a quality package. GREAT show, non-stop back2back music, with no banter at all.

  • They did a VERY good job of accomodating the ranges of both leads Most of the time there is a rather noticeable key-change, almost a break. (A good, or bad, example of this is the weird key-change in "Dream Boy-Dream Girl" by Cynthia and Johnny O)

  • loveley song

  • This song is so beautiful now that's what you call singing.. I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • Whoa, I didn't even know they did anything together! What a treat!

  • great arrangement and combination............

  • Darin + Supremes + Rodgers & Hart = MAGNIFICENT! Attention girl singers of today. Maybe you can learn a thing or two about beauty, class and professionalism from the mighty Supremes. Guy singers: look and listen to Darin. Voice, personality and style. How about it? And if there are any songwriters left out there, how about some tunes that are pleasant to the human ear & lyrics that are actchy but make sense?

  • Darin and the Supremes could sing the phone book and I'd listen. Many TV performances in the 60's were lip synced but this sounds live. Back then you had to really be able to "sing". None of that auto-tune crap of today.

  • CLASS ACT!

  • Florence looks great here!

    i mean just WOW!

  • Wow wonderful thanks! Mary surpasses Diana here, putting out that little extra; Diana trying to0 hard at times and screeches. Tho overall just great!

  • falling in love is playing a fool

  • Diana ross wig look like she fell asleep before the performance and didn't fix it when she woke up

  • fantastic harmony!!!!!

  • I forgot to add...look up Darin's version of "Hello Dolly". It's the best!!!

  • with such SIMPLICITY (staging, arrangements, vocals) you would THINK that it would be outdated. who could be more WRONG. this is STILL SIMPLY SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wannabees....take note!!! PLEASE!

  • There is a stunningly gorgeous slow, R&B version of the song, "That's All," which I heard only once about ten years ago on one of the then, so called "Oldies," radio stations. They said that the singer was Mr. Darin. I've been searching for it ever since.

    Help!

    Anybody???????????????????????????????????//

  • @lokijordan youtube.com/watch?v=wTSUSFP_Z2M

  • @lokijordan It's on a CD called "That's All". The CD also has "Mack the Knife" and Beyond the Sea. I know you can get it on Amazon. Also, for anyone who hasn't seen the movie with Kevin Spacey about Darin's life called "Beyond the Sea", please spend the time to do so. It's great!!! And Spacey does an incredible job singing Bobby Darin's music. And have the tissues ready!!!

  • The 3 gowns loving referred to by the girls 'White De Mink' were the only new set of the three costumes to be premiered in this show - the other two were previously seen in late 1965 TV shows. They are the second oldest original Supremes couture to have still survived. These were the first set to be worn in Cindy's 1st publicity photo shoot with Diana and Mary in 1967. They come with mink trimmed cuffs bollaro style short jackets and were later worn with white chiffon flowing Greecian gowns.

  • 239 at the end? that a lotta beef time

  • Well, that was cool. Finally something on YT worth watching.

  • Ha. l love the way Flo inserted her littel "yeah" adlib before Diana went into her part @ 2:39 go Flo !!!!

  • Which one is flo?

  • it's such a juvenile fancy

  • those gone too soon bobby darin and florenece ballards the real stars illuminating the night sky

  • Amazing!

  • this is amazing!

  • What's wrong with being a "drugged out sex addict"? I sure wish I was one, sounds exciting...

  • i am so in love with bobby darin.

glad to see there are so many bobby fans :)

  • @username22090 IN LOVE WITH BOBBY D forever...he left too soon!!!

  • ah, this is so sweet. What a great guy, Bobby Darin....and against the war in Vietnam too..glad to see he received a life time achievement award.

  • wow someone time that last note of bobby. would be nice to hear a showdown of booby darin and jay balck from jay and the americans

  • This is almost a duet with Diana and Flo. I can also clearly clearly hear Mary giving them hell in the middle. Damn that note that Bobby Darin is holding at the end of the song........R.I.P. Mr. Darin....R.I.P. Miss Flo.....luv ya!!!

  • I think The Supremes were doing their best with Bobby D. there. He's cool, they're backing up Bobby.

  • too bad Mary didnt get her lead here

  • The Supremes are, well, Supreme!

  • Bobby Darin received the GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TONIGHT! His son Dodd Darin gave a beautiful speech on his behalf. Bobby was a versitile, multitalented genius!

  • Booby!!! SUCH A MASTER CLASS!

  • Simply amazing!

Thanks for sharing Magamaguitam! : )

  • Excellent perfromances by Darin and the Supremes. Great music. Great Rodgers & Hart song. Timeless.

  • THANK YOU for this clip! It's Flo's voice that wipes me out! What an amazing range she had. You clearly hear her strength on melody and then top soprano! YOU GO FLO! More more more please!

    Los

    NYC

  • if you dont absolutley love the wonder that is Bobby Darin....what are you doing on this channel?

  • The point about today not having any talent is half-true & half-false. Logically, it is not possible to be totally devoid of any talent. If talent came in 1900's, talent will come in 2000's. It is just that the industry is totally devoid of any class and taste. Today's industry pushes synthesizers and other technologies that drown out true talent and skill. As a result, many truly talented singers are decorated and glammed up without any respect to their true talent.

  • They should have done an album together

  • I love this song. Good t hea it with Darrin....

  • Bobby will get the GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD ON Jan 30, 2010! Bobby was a true legend.

RIP Bobby : He passed away 36 years ago today December 20, 1973.

  • Bobby is so hot! Check him out singing "Once in a lifetime". SMOKIN!

  • THIS IS class A1 performers...not like today's PSEUDO-MUSICIANS who look like WHORES and DRUGGED OUT SEX ADDICTS!

  • That's because today's performers ARE whores and drugged out sex addicts who have no singing talent beyond what they can do in the studio (Britney Spears) so they lip sync at all their concerts.

Plus, much of what you hear today vocally on records or in concert, is pitch corrected and synthesized to further hide the fact they have no talent. FRIGGIN' SAD! BRING BACK REAL MUSIC PLEASE

  • I'm done with fighting the "falling in love with Nostalgia" brigade, but I'll say this:

not all of today's musicians are talentless whore-alikes. Go beyond the world of pop and there are countless artists born of this era with plently of talent (and a few with an aversion to sex AND drugs if that pleases your morality).

And anyone who believes that 60s music was free from sex, drugs and addictions is truly in fantasy land (they just hid it better).

  • Ok ShamonJuice name a few. Can you name any?. The only person that comes to my mind is John Mayer.. Jordin Sparks is talented, but they ruin her, by synthesizing her voice and overproduction.. Why do they have to do that?? Jordin Sparks has raw talent, she doesn't need her voice to be synthesized

  • Jason Mraz, Brandi Carlisle..

  • Well ShamonJuice...you DO have a point about 60's music...there WAS PLENTY of sex and drugs...but for the most part...it wasn't SO "in-your-face"....that's all.

  • Not only did they hide it, but they had the good sense not to bring it into there career lives and let the whole world think that was there image!

  • @rioboy13 well, we won't mention the fact that The Mamas and the Papas also appeared in this television special, and apparently they were so stoned they could *barely* lipsynch to the prerecorded track LOLOL

  • @rioboy13 I didnt know this exsisted..the wife and I love Darin, and Im big for Diana

& the Supremes... Classy, stylish and A1 all the way....

  • legendary performance by 4 legends..this is a grand treat for both Darin and Supremes fans...a 10/10 for this clip i love it! as i love Bobby Darin and Diana Ross and The Supremes!

  • when i see negative comments about this PERFORMANCE, my head shakes, wondering what performers today do they consider to be in the same CLASS as the ONES in question. THE SUPREMES+DARIN = SUPERB!

  • well said...this is legendary stuff!

  • Whoever says anything negative about this clip...is obviously..."taste impaired" :-)

  • @tofelt You said it--and what's not to like? They're singing with nothing but overhead mikes (you can see the shadow on Darrin's face at times).

  • @tofelt Thank you. It behooves me when people compare artists like Destiney's Child and a flock of other girl groups (TLC, even EnVogue) to the Supremes. Diana, Mary, and Flo (who perform here with Mr. Bobby Darin) had CLASS and weren't afraid to go beyond the horizons of mainstream pop. Even comparing them to Mariah Carey sickens me. Mariah had it going on in the beginning, then she changed and became......well, embaracing. She lost all her class....go away MIMI!

  • A fantastic song and performance by the late great Bobby Darin and the Supremes...A wonderful post and thanks to Nick for sharing!!!

    ~Frank~

  • The Late Bobby Darin's voice reminds me somewhat of the today's Michael Buble

  • Mick Bubble is not even in the same class as Bobby Darin - but it's great that he keeps the artform alive in this era.

    Mikey xx

  • imagine the wigs would have fell off at the end =D

  • the supremes before Flo left had harmony and what i thought on the outside equality. After flo left it just seemed that it was Diana doing her show with Mary and Cindy way in the background.

  • yes that's true I don't like Diana Ross And The Supremes

but fairly we also have to say that most of the songs the adantes sang backing after flo was fired

  • The note Darin reaches in 1:20 is still able to give me goosebumps, no matter how many times I listen to this.

  • i think the supremes where best when Flo was with them their harmony was so much better.. Not to knock ms birdsong, but if you would only lsten to the difference you will see.. Flo had a very good sharp 2nd soprano.

  • But to be fair to Cindy, after Flo left, the Supremes hardly ever sang harmonies in unison like thet do in this clip - Mary and Cindy usually just did background vocals to Miss Ross' lead.

But the result is the same: after Flo left, we hardly ever got any of those wonderful Supremes harmonies.

I love the way in this clip you can see the shadow of the boom mic moving between the girls, and between the girls and Bobby.

  • i thought flo had a 1st soprano and Cindy was the 2nd.

That is what mary had to adjust her singing level when cindy came into the group

  • actually flo was a first soprano :P

  • AMAZING !!! AWESOMEEEE!! yeahhh Darin, the best, any version of this in mp3 please ???

  • Exceptional version!

  • That's a lot of star power!

  • a classic....now thats t.v. ....

  • 1:32 is aMAzing. Pout of the century.

  • Bobby Darin is superb, love the man!

  • mraches,

Face it. He's gettin more chicks dead than you are alive. Look at all the comments by the women on every video of him. They love him. So suck it up and move on. You're out of you league.

  • rubbish

  • Comment removed

  • don't say he's crap i wanna a piece of u boy for sayin that

  • well he is crap, have two pieces,.

  • Bobby was one of the few performers back then who always wanted to have black entertainment as part of his show. He had Richard Pryor and Flip Wilson, he used to love to go to the Apollo theater and take some "lessons". When a white clubowner told him he could not have black entertainers in his show he replied, "If the black kid don't open the white kid don't close".

  • Bobby Darin is incredible - such a natural swing. And the Supremes are putting it down.

When he and Diana take a phrase together you wish it would go on forever and ever.

  • yo mama

  • who is this load of crap???

  • You wouldn't know........he's way too sexy for you that's for sure!

  • dont think so hun.

  • Try spreading the love instead of the hate, you'll be alot happier.

  • i dont hate people,i never mentioned hating anyone,did i?

  • Calling someone a load of crap isn't exactly nice.

  • i meant his perfomance and voice, well you got to agree on that.

  • I got to agree on that? Mister, you are not going to find any friends here so go ask your Mama to find you a new pacifier and get off the Bobby Darin sites. You';re pathetic.

  • Comment removed

  • ok i love to hate bobby darin

  • Well said.

    Bobby Darin was great !!

  • Well Bobby Darin is pretty famous & you should probably pause before you make a statement like that. Gotta admire your turn of phrase though. You made me laugh out loud so thanks for that.

  • ok i paused, thought about him and still think hes crap.

  • Well the people here love him so buzz off.

  • Bobby Darin-------just too sexy for this world!! He was WAY underrated during his lifetime, and so many of his great performances did not get TV time. I was too damned young to realize what a hottie he was back then, man this guy gets the heart rate and hormones goin!!! Woohoo!

  • yeah he is major hunk you explained it all:)

  • Totally agree!

  • brilliant! Bobby rules

  • this was mar's lead on The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart, but this performance was done before the LP was recorded

  • What gets me is that this was just before Flo was put out of the group and Barry was giving her a hard time about her weight - clearly she did NOT have a weight problem - she looks GREAT.

  • Are you sure this wasn't Cindy Birdsong during this performance? It looks like her, she was thinner than Flo, who was the curviest one in the group. She said in an interview she was a size 12, and 5'7". Of course "size 12" has changed a lot over the years.

  • Also when you look at clips where Flo and Mary are standing side by side, Flo is significantly taller than Mary, whereas Cindy was more even in height to Mary...in heels. I see the previous comments and most ppl seem to think it is Flo but the clip isn't a good close up and Cindy looked a lot like Flo from far away.

  • No. Florence was never fat. Jennifer Hudson on the other hand. Well...what can I say.

  • Was this Florence's last apperance with the Supremes? If so, Berry and Diana did not know what the hell "fat" was. Florence and Diana are damn near te same size here. What a shame. People will say anything to get what they want. And they don't care who they're hurting, as long as it's not themselves. Anyway, I wonder what Bobby said to Diana, and then Florence at the end..?? I just love Florence..and boy, that smile is just beautiful!

  • Sadly, I know Bobby died in 1973. Why is he not more celebrated and remembered for the incomparable legend and talent that he was?? He was so versatile.

  • Belt it, Flo! Woman is single-handedly holding down that intricate high harmony!

  • Bobby Darin is so sexy, I can barely see straight!

Why isn't this man more well known and celebrated?

    His singing is phenomenal!

  • Hickory, Bobby's been dead for over 30 years, poor darling. Have you heard him sing "If I were a Carpenter"? It's mesmerisingly beautiful.

  • This is terrific! Thanks for posting it!

  • i like how they really couldnt interact with each other cause of the whole race thing its funny cause it would have made the performance so much better if he could have flirted with each girl

  • Woo Bobby and Flo should have done a duet! Bobby saaang and you can hear Flo so nice throughout - especially when they sing in unison at the beginning

  • it is time for me/us to THANK GOD for YOUTUBE. enabling us to see this kind of MAGNIFICENCE. the SUPREMES: everyone who KNOWS me know how i feel about them. but danggg, MR. DARIN! the vocal phrasing...throughout, in particular at the 1:53 point, this is a MAN singing!!!

  • Actually, YouTube has been making it harder and harder to post these great videos and recordings (they even deleted my old account JonathanLGardner for posting recordings of the group)

  • He tour this song up, I wish I could put this on a CD they rocked it, espeically at the beginning!!!!

  • That man is Handsome and they look Gorgeous

  • Bobby Darin would be amongst the 5 greatest talents of all time - the singers' singer! Not too sure who the other 4 would be!

  • lol...how sad you are!

  • its rare to see 4 legends together simoultaneously..Bobby Darin was so succesful and is a legend and The Supremes..are Surpreme!

    this is brilliant!

  • Given that Flo was sacked from the group in the same year, I can't believe that Berry was giving her a hard time over her weight, she looks great here!

  • Bobby Darin is so incredibly smooth. The note he hits at 1:21 gives me the chills! So amazing...

  • I swear, I thought the same when I heard that note, indeed Darin was great... IS! Still alive through music.

  • wow what a legendary performance from 4 legends!

  • great show but Diana is straining way too far out of her vocal range . I guess they can remix this.

  • I have always loved Bobby Darren, I just whish that him and Sandra Dee could have stayed together, I don't think that she ever got over loosing him. Thanks for posting this wonderful clip with the great Suprems. God Bless Bobby Darren, he is missed so very much.

  • Magnificent....Bobby D in his cool-personified era, the original Supremes in simple, sexy white, a Rodgers & Hart standard, and color videotape. Nice to see this.

  • Bobby was thinking about rolling around in bed with all three of them! Naughty!

  • lol

  • Wonderful combination :)

  • What a MAGNIFICENT COMBINATION!!!!

  • 900 E. Jefferson is only one block from the original "Roostertail."

  • I apologize...did write "ABSOLUTE." My mistake. Unintentional.

  • From what I've read about him, Bobby Darin was also pretty much out on his ass as well toward the end of his life/career and he also had to bust his buns to leave something to his family as well. In the end they are no different from the rest of us.

  • Thanks for posting this spectacular clip.

  • Great performance with great performers....nuff said

  • Hey Tony7849...you fool! ABSOLUTE poverty is when you are out in the streets eating out of garbage cans. Thanks to welfare, Florence Ballard was able to provide a decent roof and the basics for her three daughters and for herself. She was a mighty proud individual and would never end up as a bag lady. If you had a bad experience in Detroit don't blame everybody there for it. It only shows your ignorance. And please don't come here to vent your personal frustrations. This is about great artists!

  • Never used the word "ABSOLUTE." Florence could never have qualified for welfare, as well as, Food Stamps, if she wasn't in the category of "poverty." Check MI laws. Still maintain that, the crudest, rudest people that have EVER come across, were from Detroit. Unfortunately, lived there at 900 E. Jefferson. They still haven't re-built Jefferson since the '57 riots. FACT!!! Baltimore, comes a close second. The mainj reason, as to why, will be relocating back to TX.

  • Mary sang lead on this originally. They were great until Diana started schreeching at the end. Mary then in front looking happy, Flo not.

  • Sorry, but where did you get your information??? By the way, we're talking about Diana Ross, Mary Wison and Florence Ballard. Unfortunately, Florence passed away, quite a few years ago, in ABSOLUTE poverty, in Detroit...arguably, the worst city that I have EVER visited. What ROTTEN people!!!!!!

  • I'm a bit late to reply but The Supremes didn't record their Rodgers & Hart album until AFTER this performance - their appearance on the ABC special Rodgers & Hart today inspired the album LOL

  • Oh Man, this swings!!! I love it..what a joy to see these old clips. Can't compare with anyone today..the Supremes or Bobby!!

  • Thank you! Thank you! This is the best post! I love Bobby Darin! May he rest in peace and may the third Supreme also have a peaceful rest! This is great!!!

  • do you think a person can have a carreer forever??? frank sinatra had not had a top hit for 20 years before My Way....don't hear you criticizing that fact.madonna would also fade out by the time she is 64...and her girly bits are no longer worth flashing....diana forever.

  • only in the usa daytripper.

she has ahd many hits around the world since then. the biggest selling single in japan in the late 80's, the biggest selling single in australia in 1986 and a huge hit in the uk in the early 90's and again a few years ago.

plus she does sellout concerts around the world. its just you guys in the usa that hate her. we LOVE HER!

  • thats really true! why does everybody here hate her? she is a fantastic singer and has awesome songs. i don't know why so many people hate her!
