Even though Hendrix, Page, and Van Halen are all great players. I have to give it to Yngwie Malmsteen even though he isn't as influential as any of the above 3 people I listed he has amazing skill. Just watch him do "far beyond the sun" with the japan philharmonic. It will blow you away.
I'm gonna go with Jimmy Page and David Gilmour tied for first. Both so different in styles but created some of the most fantastic riffs and solo's we'll ever listen too. But Hendrix is closely behind in second
So tough because I like so many styles. Blues I'd say Peter Green, Albert King. SRV, Jeff Healey, (RIP) and Gary Moore (RIP) also had some great blues stuff. For The faster players Malmsteen, Satriani, avd Vai and I have seen them all in concert. Jason Becker was an incredible guitarist and composer, crippled way too soon with ALS also Vinnie Moore and Tony Macalpine. God then there are Beck Clapton page. But of all I list here Tommy Emmanuel will always be one of my favorites
@44FlubbaDubba44 if you scroll down to my list from last year , you will see Kirk Hammet #10. however after all that Bobby Crispy has done for me I made him #10 this year.
i don`t think that u can compare the guitarists like Ingwie Malmsteen, Slash,Kirk,Zakk,Rhandy, Hendrix and others cuz they all have their up and downs and diffrent styles. Most of them rocks
I would have to say more then likely the best guitar player is probably some unknown guy that only a few know about. But he never joined a band and got discovered. But my favorite PROFESSIONAL player is Alex Lifeson AKA Aleksandar Živojinović from Rush. I don't care how good you think you are at what ever it is you do, there is always someone better.
I believe Buckethead to be the greatest guitarist of all time. He does everything. I have heard hi do some of the weirdest stuff and out into highly technical stuff. When he decides to play real music it is very impressive. I even heard him do death metal stuff on a banjo!
definitely randy rhoads. he did so much in just a little under 2 years. he was a musical genius and if he was not taken at such a young age, he would've gone on to completely take over the rock and roll world! r.i.p. randy rhoads. the greatest.
Jimi Hendrix. At first, I chose Jimmy Page but then I realized in all along the watchtower, Hendrix improvised a lot of the parts in the song. That's cool man. The guy just goes there and plays music. He doesnt give a shit man, all he does is play music.
Link Wray he made his guitar sound rough he was the first guitarist who made the distortion without him there can´t be a jimmy page or hendrix listen to his songs, rumble by link wray
i mean, hes sexy (well back in his day), had THE BEST songs, and, well hes just awesome at guitar. well so are the others but still its like how can you not think hies the best?
hendrix. He could play both with his right and left hand. Played with emotion, was a showmen, and was LOUD. well for his time that is. great improv and didnt really give a fuck about technical abilities which is why his free form improv was non exsistent even to this day. the bad part of hendrix was he lasted for like 3 years and poof gone. Just 3 years of material and he is on the list. Thats gotta be number 1 for me.
Hendrix, Page, Frehley, Van Halen, Slash, Young...ALL SUCK!!!!! They're not even real guitarists! Just some spotlight showmen! Buckethead,Michael Angelo Batio, Shawn Lane, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Joe Petrucci, Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert (for example) are real guitarists! One of those would the best one, i would say Buckethead
Jimi Hendrix is the best guitar player, he was playing stuff behind his head that Eric Clapton said was to hard for him to learn, Jimi Hendrix was a left handed genius
In the studio its James Page hands down. Live, I dont know, on any given night a player could have God smiling on em! That is a guitar players response.
Alex Skolnick, Marty Friedman, Adam D and Joel from Killswitch, Jeff Loomis, Thomas Erak, Paul Waggoner, Michael Romeo, John McGlaughlin, Alan Holdsworth, John Petrucci, Rusty Cooley, some of my favs
I have influences from everywhere, Randy Rhoads, Malmsteen, Dimebag, Angus Young, Billy Gibbons, Matthias Jabs, Jason Becker, Jimmy Page, James Hetfield, Jeff Waters, David Gilmour, Mick Ronson, etc. I can't choose one! It's the hardest thing to do.
Anyone ever see Antoine Dufour? Best fingerstyle acoustic player in my opinion.. and I like Joe Bonamassa for blues, Paul Gilbert for shredding and Angus Young for straight-forward Rock.
Kirk is a turd who gets credit for stuff he doesn't do, Page is just quite simply a thief, Hendrix was the greatest back then, but guitar playing has evolved far beyond Hendrix, and EVH is phenomenal, but isn't as versatile, technical, musical, and as out of the box as guitarists like Guthrie Govan and Buckethead. Shawn Lane. By far the most technical and he knew how to apply that technique tastefully. Excellent compositions, and mind-blowing live performances. Highly diverse as well.
jimi hendrix of course!!! ...no one can recreate his sound and style of playing ....and another to go along with that is jack white, dont have an idea what he does to get his sound but its amazing!!!
well jimi hendrix of course!!! ...no one can recreate his sound and style of playing ...but second, my opinion, is jack white ...he'll be legendary before its over
well as in skill and just pure groove id give it to yngwie. but my personal fav is of course dimebag. he could shred and the thing that makes him so great was his personality. great guy , down to earth and loved people. and he could really fucking shred and no matter how fast he soloed it always had a head bobbin groove to it. he wins in my book. its not about speed like some of these guys, its about the soul you put into it and if it has a groove to it to make you rock your head
Eddie van halen no doubt about it if he didn't introduce 2 hand tapping and his effects and pedals angus young malmesteen or buckethead wouldn't be where they are today because he introduced the phase 90 pedal which changed alot so did the phaser effect

This is a debate we often have in college
MY opinion (as prodominatly an acoustic player)
Best Ear for Melody - Mark Knopfler or Santana
Best Shredder - Currently paul gilbert but it often changes (i dont like shredders)
Best Fingerpicker and Harper - Tommy Emmanual
Best composer - (controvesial but) Matt Bellamy
Best in history - Hendrix
Most Revolutionary - Hendrix
Most Evolutionary - Tom Morello (though i dont like his guitar music) or Matt Bellamy
