i knew this song as 'mimpi sedih' (sad dream) (sung by the late indonesian singer Broery Marantika, also covered by Emilia Contessa from the movie 'Akhir Sebuah Impian' (The End of a Dream) and was a top hit in Malaysia back in '75. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it was actually a Maori song in '84 when i ws studying in Auckland. beautiful song indeed. I hope those who wrote and sang the original got their deserved royalty.
@xefron123 This song is an ancient Tuhoe waiata from Ruatahuna that goes back to the 19th century. Credit was given where credit was due - to Tui Teka.
I love this song ... before the movie "What becomes of the broken hearted" I only knew this song in our own language "Mimpi sedih" ... but the meaning & feelings are the same ... LOVE
A truly wonderful song sung by an amazing New Zealander. A proud man of his people and culture. His music bonded us and connected with both pakeha and maori. The feelings he stirs in our souls are truthful, without fear. As a teenager of that era I believe he contributed to the person I am today.
tena koe e teke mo to waiata ataahua. he mea nui tenei waiata ki au... no reira e te rangata hoe to waka ki nga tipuna, nga matua o nga tipuna, me te whanau katoa
spoke to missy tui teka years ago on the phone and conveyed how much this great man meant to me in my youth ... bless her and family and take special care of our prince :)

Tui Teka's my uncle on my dads side even thou I didn't know him I still feel happy and sad when I listen to him sing. Beautiful song brings back hardout memories of back in the days.
Here's the english translation to the Maori words. Ka pai i tenei waiata! To you, my darling my greetings. No matter where you go I will follow close behind. My love will remain firm. Come my beloved, turn to me as I stand here and I shall carry your love with me.
