it's b/c the 230v is simply too powerful for the 12v unit to handle...it doesn't stand a chance. here, in the u.s., you can blow them up with 115v, having at least a second or two of "buzzzz" before final demise. i blew up old walkie-talkie power supplies as a teen (on 115v), with "fun" results
