Saw them live downtown Houston in 71'. Sat about 4 feet away, actually I was lying down with my date. When she drank her harmonica water, I thought this is one tough chick!
I first heard of Tommy Bolin in Denver.they said he was a wierdo punk from out east and too flab I guess, but he showed who could kick royal ass fast...one of the best...ZEPHYR will run over your ass and leave you wondering WTF andWHY...check it out ...Candy Givens is Janis Joplins' sis i think, but the harp kills me,you'll see:)~
Also, I discovered later, that at the exact time that I was hearing the first Zephyr album courtesy of Judy Collins' sister, Tommy Bolin was at Electric Lady Studios, NYC, about to record the second Zephyr album. He was sitting in that studio, playing one of Hendrix's guitars when he got the news. Ironically, there is a song on that album entitled-"At This Exact Moment". My brother still has the guitar Hendrix gave him.
The very first time I ever heard this was courtesy of Judy Collins' kid sister, Holly. We were both at a boarding school in New Hampshire at the time (fall '70), and she was playing this album in her dormroom, and this song was playing as I passed by her door.
This was the day after Jimi Hendrix died.
Ironically, my brother was in L.A. recording a version of The Band Of Gypsys' "We've Got To Live Together" with Buddy Miles's own band (on guitar) at the time; her sister, "Amazing Grace" in NYC
i hate people that are stuck in one genre or era of music!!! I hope "WHEN IM 64" I will still appreciate the diversity of emotions and mindscapes and variuos lyrical formats and guitar styles and drum patterns and bass grooves and vocal cadence and tonal changes and new melodies and moods and different writing modes and scales and just overall something NEW to experience! By the way I listen to Dion and the Belmonts,The Beatles,ELO,Zepplin,Doors,CCR,The Cars,Loverboy,Metallica,NIN,Machinehead
@anthonyhope84 the biggest problem with music in the 60's was AM radio and promoters.if you sucked it right you got played.tunes like this were word of mouth.if you lived in a small remote town you had to work extra hard to be kool.if you really want to get eclectic, try Sabre Dance by Dave Edmunds or Piano Concherto # 21 by Mozart.i fully agree with you,who told us to be locked in time?how bout' Sonny Boy Williamson or Zebra?plus T.O.A.D. or Evanence.
I'm so sick of people talking shit about modern music. bands like Zephyr ahd the same amount of popularity back then as some incredible bands lying beneath the surface.
@goatsbutter meh, it`s hard to find good music nowadays, but that`s just because there`s a bigger pile to dig trough. It`s there tho, just gotta look hard enough.
But I really hate most of the crap they put on the radio these days... Only channel that doesn`t bug me much is classical music...
This was a great group of musicians fronted by a Joplin wanna-be. I'm sorry, the vocals killed this band. After listening to just the first 3 songs from this album you will be longing for an instrumental number to rest your ears.
I was lucky enough to see Zephyr when this album had just come out. Candy Givens , and Tommy Bolin and the whole band were amazing. I also saw Joplin about 2 months later just before she died and if she had opened for Zephyr , she would have been booed off the stage. Candy Givens is and always will be one of the best rock and roll women I have every seen. RIP Candy and Tommy.
Wow, came across this by accident. Flashback, I was 16 and fell in love with this voice. Forgotten what real rock was because of the junk that's put out today, miss it.
@upnod Of course there are many comments similar to mine. It's not searching for attention or acceptance, it is simply commenting on the truth. I love music like this and by stating my age, I show that this music will never die. This music speaks to the hearts of many, young and old alike.
A timeless track. This one has it all, including the guitar virtuosity of Tommy Bolin, the heartfelt belting of Candy Givens, an imaginative arrangement, and outstanding use of dynamics. A great, great band.
Someone tell me it is not shit that you have to go through 2-3 pages of results here to find this band. There is no fucking justice... Best song ever...
I saw this group in 68 at Colorado State U...we hippies had a Freak Ball to coincide with the frat's Greek Ball...it was held in an indoor cattle arena with a dirt floor...nobody knew this group...they came in set up in the middle of this dirt floor and proceeded to blow us away!
Yeah, gettin' my sat. morning started right!

This one is a super tune. Love Givens' singing, reminds me very much like Janis Joplin. Bolin was also great in this one.
