@android16B Wow. I believe in things like that. Basically, they were riding under a huge bag of hydrogen, as dangerous as a hangarfull of gasoline fumes! it had a lot of tight bracing wires inside- if one of the steel lines broke, it would whiplash-gash a giant bag of hydrogen and let it all out to where it could be lit. No one really knows the source of the fire. Even our US Airships, filled with helium that couldn;t burn, all crashed or broke up in the high winds of stormy flight.
Fire often goes by the nickname "The Beast". If something as small as a house is only a snack for The Beast, then the Hindenburg was an all-you-can-eat buffet.
I read that one of the survivors was trapped in a tangle of hot girders, and he broke 'em with his bare hands to get out! One can only imagine the searing pain he felt.
That's 100% true. Most survivors DID walk out like that- thru a flaming MAZE of white-hot girders. Aluminum burns at 1,500 deg. F! One passenger was a pro stage acrobat- he rode her down to about 40 feet, then jumped from an observation window - did a pro tuck 'n roll away from the impact area, and then got up and ran- without a scratch!
@Crashman2 The guy you're referring to is Joseph Spach. He was an acrobat and a vaudeville comedian. He repeatedly went to the bottom of the ship to feed his dog.
Back in college physics, for a demo show, we used to fill small balloons with hydrogen and ignite them.. the boom would make the whole auditorium rattle. Imagine what that huge explosion was like.
@wcburns It was actually 16 separate explosions. The Hindenburg had 16 inner bladders that held the hydrogen, for a grand total of 7,062,000 cubic feet. As the fire hit each one, it exploded.
its interesting to note that it appears the hindenburg had giant swastikas on the the tailfins. however, since it was 1937 no one seemed to mind. imagine a plane landing in the usa today with giant swastikas on it.
seriously! could you imagine a swastika clad aircraft landing in america just a year and a half later? I read that the zeppelin company had gone bankrupt partway through building the hindenburg, had to go to the nazis for funding, and were forced to use swastikas as part of the deal
America openly traded in commerce with the Nazi party as did most countried before 1939. The nazi's had an office and base at the Landing zones for each zepplin and were crewed by germans on american soil. There is a huge rumour that those staff that helped later got gold medals from Hitler himself for helping with this disaster, only for it to be revealed after the war, the gold was from jews in the holocaust. Quite horrific.
It seems that the Hindenburg in its enormity of size was tiny in technological result, while the tiny Volkswagen, while of simple mechanics was of enormous success. Hitler should have stuck with the volkswagen alone.
@phill89 I actually saw some interior photos of the ship. Get this! She had a small piano on board. She also had a smoking room--a dangerous thing with 7.000.000 cubic feet of hydrogen holding the ship up!
A historical note: the USA didn´t sold helium to Germany, so the zeppelin flew with hydrogen. and what burns better? helium or hydrogen?
to the music at this video: sb. should do such a video with such a funny music with 9/11 and with scens where people jump out of the WTC. maybe that is funny? mental illness shit.
If you do the next time such a vid. remember, also some of your US citizens died at the hindenburg-disaster.
Yeah, well, she was a Nazi ship anyway. And I'm a by-birhright American citizen. What does that have anything to do with anythng? Flaming crashes usually omit the immigration\passport check. Except for the Swiss and the Israelis.
Do you mean the people down on the floor surviving because there were i think 36 people on the hindenburg and they all died, i'm sure it was 36, i saw a program about it, i can't imagine what it was like
..by waiting till the gondola was almost down, then calmly leaping down and striding away thru the flaming aluminum girders. Hey, it worked for some. Most fatalities panicked and jumped from way too high, though.
No way I' was there, but I had a buddy who just passed away a few years ago at 96, who was there. He was in NYC when it happened and they saw the black smoke after it crashed.
the right music? the only thing somewhat right about it was that they were singing about the hindenburg. the tune was too cheerful...didn't fit with the images
I have to admit... never in my wildest dreams did it occur to me that someone would consider this music mismatched to the vid. This proves it: there's always one.
There are a lot of theories - current one is possibly that a spark of lightning ignited the flammable paint on the hull. It looks ghastly but the hydrogen burned upward - away from the gondola. Most deaths were jumpers - although some jumpers made it ok & were interviewed by Morrison! Most survivors stayed in the gondola, then ran out when it hit the ground.
Can I get this on itunes??

@wcburns Well think of your small balloon, and scale it up to 804 feet by 135 feet, and you'll get a good idea of what it was like.

Unintentional poetry! "It had everybody talking and the loss of life was shocking." That rhymes! I like that.

Finally! A sensible question...It's named just "Hindenburg" by Russell& Hardin on their rare 1978 album "Wax Museum"- see:

a disaster, is a disaster and a loss of innocent lives. Never mind what country the hindenburg was made in as far as i am concerned

But you have to admit, the song would lack drama if the chorus went "Were you there when the Hindenburg went UP..."
