@kolinmartz Because when Vietnam rolled around, it wasn't a desert. It was jungle, AKA you can't see shit. GI's would unload entire mags without knowing if they even came close to gooks. Here, it's completely open space and you know what you're shooting at. Hence the M4...it's selective Semi/Full auto. Also, back then the military was trying to save money (bad idea) now, it's do or die.

@1stSgtSoulStealer Actually the M16 was changed from full auto to 3 shot burst because of overheating issues. Firing 3 round bursts as opposed to fully automatic makes it take a lot longer to overheat.

@kolinmartz M240 is a weapon for suppressing fire. You can call it a LMG GPMG whatever. It is made to suppress enemy units and take out enemies behind cover. Simply LMG=Ammo Waster.

They are generally operated from a stationary prone position from either a bipod or tripod, or otherwise mounted on a vehicle, as they are usually too powerful and heavy to be fired effectively on foot from an unsupported standing position or on the move. An LMG however usually fires an intermediate round and are actually a lot easier to control than the movies make them out to be. There's really not much ammo being wasted.
