I install windows and doors for a living and these videos leave out a lot of useful info. if you insist on installing a door yourself, you should google TruTech or Dorplex installation instructions. They're much more in depth (much better doors, as well). Dorplex would be my choice.
That's great and all, but I keep getting the top corner of the door bowing in a bit. How do you adjust the fit to get a tight seal at the top opening/unhinged corner?
The nice thing about companies like Lowe's and Home Depot is if you aren't satisfied with an installer or the work they did, request someone else. They may not be obligated to do anything, but they likely will to maintain customer service. The lovely part about the internet is there's always more complainers than praisers.
@co11aboration I wasn't suggesting a higher quality door is installed any differently. But if you gl shopping for a Porsch and settle for a Toyota because its "cheaper", don't complain about it.
I used a product call EZhang to install my door from the garage into the house. No shims either, it was great! Only took me about 45 minutes total. That was taking out the old door too...
@kvats12 lol was about to say the same thing. Lowe's requires all their subcontracted installers to sign documentation saying that your work is guaranteed for one year. Stop by the store and ask for a copy of the installation contract, it's stored in the production office and has all your information you'll need. They can also fax it to you, if you prefer.
already have my door this helped me know what else to do. I will secure my frame more to withstand someone trying to get in or storms. thank you lowes
@co11aboration If it's not done correctly Lowe's will cover that until you're satisfied, as long as you point out the issue within the 1st year. If you do it yourself and screw up (and the door), you're looking at a whole new door and doing it all over again. I always suggest to people that know what product you're buying/installing prior to making a final decision. If you want a cheap door, be expected to live with a "cheap" door regardless how good or poor the installer may be.
@kvats12 The Lowe's installers took seven (7) HOURS to install 1 exterior door... 7 HOURs for 1 door. The installers showed-up with BRAND NEW TOOLS (still had the shine)... first flag they were inexperienced. The only criteria for Lowe's installers are to pay the state for a license and pay for liability insurance... NO ONE should think ONLY an expensive door can be installed correctly...
Respond to this video... Lowe's installers watched the video (too) but didn't read the directions for the steps not shown in the video PLUS they screwed up on the original measurements -- I have pictures of their incompetence.
My husband just tried to hang the door without the frame. He wanted to just put the knew door into the existing frame. Now, a very upset husband is back at the store trying to find a new lock since there is a huge gap in the frame. Any suggestions?
Hmm.. why didn't they nail the door jamb? All they did was screw the hinges. I do trim work, and I've seen that same thing done before by other trim carpenters, and within a week the wind alone blew the entire door down. Jamb and all
Sometimes the pilaster and head trims are added around a pre-hung door as shown in the video. If that's the case, then a replacement pre-hung door will go in without replacing the trims. You might have to trim the brick molding or outer trims to make it fit.
you buthcered the door Mikey ,sorry, but that trim does'nt go with the pilaster trims that you left from the old door looks like to me you pulled a fast one on the homeowner the brick molding should have never fit in that opening attached to the door with the old trim still up aka pilasters got that Mikey! and the door had brushed stainless hinges when you were trying to and i mean trying to hanging it then when it went to paint it that ugly red you picked had brass hinges ? cant fool me Mikey!!

no way that was the door for that opening those pilasters and head trims where never attached to the door jamb
on the outside
dont try this at home homeowners lowes is pulling your middle leg on this one
never seen a door with those type f trims not be the trm for the outside mr lowes needed to throw away the cheap brick mlding and reset all new pilasters and heaers would cost a fortune to be done moe than a home owner
can handle homeowners beware of this way of hanging a door
I have no way of telling what the hell you're TRYING to say because of your lack of of punctuation and run-on sentences. Why don't you take some pride and proof read your comments before you start bashing other people's work.
Makes it look easy! It doesn't seem as complicated as I thought it would be - just a little tedious and time-consuming. I think my brother and I can do it!

I used the Door Caddy to install all of my doors. It is a device that makes installing doors a simple process. Google door caddy for more info.

We hired Lowes to install the pre-hung exterior door and it turned out screwed-up. There's no guarantee Lowes installers will do the job correctly...
