George Raft was actually of German descent and spoke German. He actually was a gangster in the past, was practically worshiped by gangsters after he became one of the top three gangster movie actors of the 1930s (Cagney, Robinson, and Raft--Bogart was a distant 4th that decade), and was also one of the best dancers around. Check out youtube for some great 1929 dancing.
@peng1965a Take a look at "Take a Look at Her Now (1929)" on youtube (it's the name of the song and the way the youtube clip is designated). Some unique fluid dancing from Raft.
I've never seen Boris Karloff so good!! Look at his crazed eyes and contorted face. He's ready to go toe to toe with Lugosi more so than in any of their later films together. This was the same year he played the monster in "Frankenstein." And watch how every time someone is killed, an "X" of one sort or another appears on the screen.
God, Paul Muni was a brilliant actor!! Look at how he holds his arms in front of him, like an ape, and moves like one. He was viewed as the best film actor for a long time, with Spencer Tracy as his one rival. Muni was played totally different characters while Tracy was always exactly the same one. Both sensational. And sidekick George Raft in his first big role, flipping that nickel and every inch and moment one of the screen's great leading men, no matter what anyone says. He's great.
I got the limited edition scarface on blu Ray disc hard cover it comes with the first scarface and the remake that's a collectors item you know what I mean Meng gu kiddin me oh wha
Mundi was an embarrassment, his mugging to the camera was like something you see in a Marx brothers film. This dude might of been good in the silent films but he didn't cross over well. My opinion and if you dont like it maybe id better introduce you to my little friend....murhahahahahahahaha
Whether the original is better than the remake is a matter of opinion but I favor Paul Muni over Al Pacino for 2 reasons I saw the original first & because it was groundbreaking in 1932. This was such a hit in 1932 that even real gangsters like Al Capone were impressed by it's realism & he invited George Raft over for a personal meeting. Raft was popular with real gangsters. Can't rewrite history, gangster films were a new kind of excitement in the early '30s. Paul Muni did it first.
@WINGGULLSEAGULL Yes, the gangsters worshipped Raft, who'd worked for his close friend Owney Madden in New York. Orson Welles and many others noted how they'd try to dress like Raft and imitate his dialogue. When Raft has a strong director, like Hawks or Raoul Walsh ("The Bowery," "Manpower"), he's magnificent and can go toe to toe with anybody on the screen, even Wallace Beery in 1933.
How can you not like THE ORIGINAL gangster movie, but everything that spawned from it? No sense of history for some people! That's like claiming to love apples but not liking the tree they grow from!
@VeraRabbit Everybody was at the time, later Hawks became a master of it. Don't forget, this movie was made before John Wayne and stuntman Yakima Canutt pioneered credible screen onscreen fisiticuffs with their B westerns a little later in the '30s. For John Wayne's best acting, though, see Raoul Walsh's "The Big Trail," made before this in 1930, a western shot on location all across the West. Walsh discovered Wayne as a 23-year-old prop man, changed his name, and gave him the leading role.
@VeraRabbit Thanks! You won't be disappointed. And watch for the greatest villain ever, Tyrone Power, Sr. (Tyrone Power's father) as the bearded bullwhacker, the character upon whom Popeye's Brutus was obviously based. Shot on location. There's a widescreen(!) and 35mm version shot simultaneously from different angles. MoMA runs the widescreen version on its huge screen every year here in NYC. John Ford always tried to discredit the movie because it's Wayne's 1st great film, not "Stagecoach."
@acdc30450 I wasn't born in the 30's so this shit doesn't appeal to me. Fuck off dick head. Did my words offend you that much that you had to reply to a week old comment. The reality is, why would I watch this old black & white film, over the remake. The remake has my all time favorite movie scene. When Tonys "Brother" gets chainsawed is my favorite movie scene ever. I'm not saying this sucks. I'm glad this film was made, without it, one of my favorite movies wouldn't be here.
@Onaga69 You weren't born in the 1930's ? Weak argument neither was I, I grew up in the 1960's yet my favorite movies to this day are the 1930's & 40's. Hollywood golden age another words the best movies. In 60 to 70 years from now who are we still going to be talking about Al Pacino & other "modern actors" or Paul Muni, & George Raft ?? "Talkies" & gangster films were an exciting new thing in the early '30's.It'll always go back to the originators because they did it first.
@Onaga69 This film is a classic. The fact that you can not see past the fact that this film is in black and white and enjoy every thing that is great about it shows how immature and uneducated you are. The remake is absolute garbage. Al Pacino is nothing more than a coke head and the movie is just a series of gruesome acts thrown together. This film has the right to be called Scarface. The re make that you idolize fails in every aspect of cinematography and was made for trailer trash morons(you)
@acdc30450 its a movie get over it. just because my standards don't fit yours doesn't mean you have to get all pissy about it. Get that fucking sand out of your vagina bitch. I'm still in high school for fuck sakes and your calling me uneducated. Don't say shit you know nothing about.
@Onaga69 Thank you for proving my point. If you are in high school than maybe you should learn to keep your mouth shut and let the intellectuals do the talking
@acdc30450 SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU NO LIFE DOUCHE BAG, OH YEAH YOUR REAL FUCKING INTELLECTUAL BECAUSE YOU WATCH OLD MOVIES??!! FUCK OUT OF HERE YOU OLD PEACE OF SHIT. YOUR GONNA GROW UP AND DIE A MISERABLE FUCKING OLD MAN. YOUR ARGUING WITH SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE SAME MOVIE AS YOU. SHOWS HOW INTELLECTUAL YOU REALLY ARE, ARGUING WITH A FUCKING KID IN HIGH SCHOOL. YEAH REAL FUCKING SMART YOU ARE. DOUCHE BAG..
@Onaga69 No I am one of those people who can not stand ignorance and stupidity. You had the nerve to spread your dumb opinion in the public domain by commenting on this video, and so made yourself a target of criticism. As for movies, of course I watch other films other than black and white, we are in 2011. In fact being movie buff, I know a good film when I see one. If you had bothered to watch this whole film, you would realize that the Al Pacino's Scarface does not come close to the original.
Wow!! Never knew that the 80's (actually thought it was 70's, as I saw it in the later 80's as a kid) Scarface was a remake. I think they remade most of these gangster / bad guy movies from the 30's to 50's.
They influenced all the WB cartoons animators(Fritz Freleng) and these gangster characters still the same keep popping up today.
@lilbash8 The 1983 remake is ok to see one time, the original is where it's at. I saw the 1932 original long before the remake ever existed. As i said the remake is ok but I would never watch it again when I can see the original which is way better. Usually the originals are always better than their remakes. The only exception is The Maltese Falcon 1941 which is better than the original 1931 version.
I AM NOT MAKING FUN OF THIS MOVIE, BUT HE DIED LIKE A WUSE, BUT ANTONIO MONTANA DIED LIKE A MAN WITH BALLS FILLED WITH HOT PISS THAT CAN BURN HUMANS AS WE SPEAK
@mike16460 yeah...but Tony Montana was high. Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Tony Camonte had just killed his long time friend and recent brother-in-law and watched his own sister die. Those are events not likely to put him in the emotional state required to go out like a Tony Montana. What always got me about this film was the Disney-esque music for "THE END" scene. Still, a great classic film bases on the Al Capone story.
@Hyperborea2012 George Raft stumbled onto acting & lacked acting experience unlike Muni & other actors. The coin flipping compensated for his limited acting ablity & it worked & made him stand out & he became an overnight star. He was popular with real life gangsters.
@JJandSrev yes but you have to admit that his death was kinda... boring, i mean compare his death with Tony Montana's which one seems more impressive? Actually we cant really compare a 1930's movie with one from the late 80's
@mynameisnotalfieok You know how much violence and cussing is on the movie Casino? It's still timeless movie. So w hat's your point with the violence and swearing? It's realistic how people talk. The two films are both great and to take credit away from the 1983 version is pointless as your statement. They are both two different depictions from different people from different eras. Discrediting the 83 film is a classic and ridicules.
What a classic! What a classic! That is what I call a true master piece. Great acting, superb acting. Only people with good taste find these kind of mater pieces enjoyable. How they use three shots and how Toni gets to power and how he falls. I have nothing more to say, that I've enjoyed this classic tonight.
Paul Muni was hollywoods great actor of the 1930's, he was more versatile then the other actors of his time. He did "I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang" the same year. James Allen was a radical departure from Tony Camonte in Scarface. By 1936 he was doing biographys like "The Story Of Louis Pasteur" & "The Life Of Emile Zola" in 1937. 1932's "Scarface" & "Chain Gang" never fail to impress a modern audience.
For 1932, it's a good film, but Muni trying to act Italian was uneven, he even slips his Yiddish in a couple of times by accident. Let's not make too much of his performance unless you want to act like a syncophantic dolt.
this is a classic and if u dont like it why are you watching it then u fucking doughnut.........fuck off this is a brilliant film...........prick who ever you are
also see how many times the letter X shows up throughout the film. in the background on walls, on doors ect. not really talked about that much at the time if you pay attention
a gangster classic pure and simple muni is great and ann dvorak never been sexier unlike the remake which i hated; this version at least moved at a quick pace
i like this original version. i like how tony goes out in the remake compared to this one tho. a lot of it is the same with some variations. just like in the remake it breaks my heart when tony kills his friend/partner ranaldo. i think in both versions they chose really cute guys to play that character, ranaldo. i watched the remake cuz michelle pfieffer is in it. she's one of my favorite actresses. i love you howard hughes! you were freaking gnarly! thumbs up for the original!
This classic gangster film from 1832 did not need a remake, the original was produced by Howard Hughes, directed by Howard Hawks & starred Paul Muni & George Raft this film launched both actors to the top. Boris Karloff plays a rival gangster. A very high standard for any remake to live up to & I wish hollywood would leave the old classics alone. These actors are dead but their legacy lives on, can't argue with greatness. Paul Muni blows Al Pacino out of the water. Sorry Pacino fans.
@xxchimakaraxx My mistake I meant 1932. The point is this classic gangster movie set a very high standard & was the most influential of the early 30's. It was more violent & graghic than Little Ceaser & The Public Enemy.
I think its a terrific movie going by the standards of 30s and the film making style! Those who saw it 80 yrs ago must have been floored by this stuff!!thumbs up!!
This original 1932 version with Paul Muni & George Raft is the only version you need to see. The 1983 remake is good to see one time only. It's not as good as this original which I've seen dozens of times. Al Pacino doesn't hold a candle to Paul Muni who was a very versatile actor. I really hate when they do remakes of classic films of the golden age because it's never as good. Muni, Raft, Cagney & Bogart & Robinson set the standard for gangster films of the 30's.
@vladimir1944 The juxtaposition of 'actors are dead' and 'this version sucked' seems to (subconsciously) imply that this version sucked because all these actors are dead.
@skorpion1028 Duh, these actors are dead, this film is like 90 years old... and don't compare a film that was made 50 years before another film, it's like comparing a 50 year old man vs a professional athlete. Who's gonna win the foot race? See my point?
and scarface 1983 didn't have any funny parts cause scarface 1983 is brutal, cold and emotional film cause in film it's shown all bad and brutal things that happen in life and i must say that scarface 1983 is one of the best movies ever next to godfather
best scarface movie is with al pacino why?? i will give you reasons:Al pacino acted tony montana really good, when tony montana started to get greedy taking too much coke al pacino acted like some lunatic you know on last scene"YOU STUPID MARICON"!! when he says i mean scarface 1983 has better scenes and actors are freaking amazing AL PACINO THE BEST!!!but what did you expect from a movie from 1932??well this movie is good but scarface 1983 is much greater than 1932.Sorry scarface 1932 fanboys.
@playboy5hawty92 idk just something the director had in the scene right after a death, some are obvious and others are hidden in the background, like an X from the window shadow n stuff
The 80's version is almost a word for word remake of this film. Oliver Stone was so stoned when he wrote this (he admitted as much) that it seems he just remembered everything he saw from the '32 version and went with it. Thanks for the post; and like the whore house boss says, "Keep 'em coming!"
the ultimate gangster film.unlike the 1983 remake this film moves at a fast clip.see if you can count how many of the letter X you can see in this film there spread out through the whole movie
What a shame that each of these great early gangster films have to have a disclaimer at the beginning denouncing the gangster life just because some idiots were afraid the films would corrupt young people.
It's art! Still Little ceasar, Public enemy and Scarface are classic films that any gangster film fan have to own.
My favorite part is around 58:20 when Tony's sister shows up; she tells George Raft she's no longer jail-bait and then she struts and around and "shakes it" for him to a very raunched out version of "Some Of These Days."
This movie reminds me of present day Chicago except all the gangsters are in public office.

For 1932, it's a good film, but Muni trying to act Italian was uneven, he even slips his Yiddish in a couple of times by accident. Let's not make too much of his performance unless you want to act like a syncophantic dolt.

i like this original version. i like how tony goes out in the remake compared to this one tho. a lot of it is the same with some variations. just like in the remake it breaks my heart when tony kills his friend/partner ranaldo. i think in both versions they chose really cute guys to play that character, ranaldo. i watched the remake cuz michelle pfieffer is in it. she's one of my favorite actresses. i love you howard hughes! you were freaking gnarly! thumbs up for the original!

@WINGGULLSEAGULL did they even have cameras in 1832?
xxchimakaraxx 4 months ago
@xxchimakaraxx My mistake I meant 1932. The point is this classic gangster movie set a very high standard & was the most influential of the early 30's. It was more violent & graghic than Little Ceaser & The Public Enemy.

I think its a terrific movie going by the standards of 30s and the film making style! Those who saw it 80 yrs ago must have been floored by this stuff!!thumbs up!!
aadityaaggarwal24 4 months ago 3
This original 1932 version with Paul Muni & George Raft is the only version you need to see. The 1983 remake is good to see one time only. It's not as good as this original which I've seen dozens of times. Al Pacino doesn't hold a candle to Paul Muni who was a very versatile actor. I really hate when they do remakes of classic films of the golden age because it's never as good. Muni, Raft, Cagney & Bogart & Robinson set the standard for gangster films of the 30's.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
All these actors are dead, and this version sucked.
skorpion1028 4 months ago
@skorpion1028 Care to elaborate why this essential classic sucks?
vladimir1944 4 months ago 13
@vladimir1944 he answered the question lol, the actors are dead so he can't read about them in US weekly, therefore it sucks!
ripcurl9799 4 months ago
@vladimir1944 The juxtaposition of 'actors are dead' and 'this version sucked' seems to (subconsciously) imply that this version sucked because all these actors are dead.
shehry1shehry 3 months ago
@skorpion1028 its the same story, so how does it suck?
southernbrooklyngal 4 months ago
@skorpion1028 Duh, these actors are dead, this film is like 90 years old... and don't compare a film that was made 50 years before another film, it's like comparing a 50 year old man vs a professional athlete. Who's gonna win the foot race? See my point?

and scarface 1983 didn't have any funny parts cause scarface 1983 is brutal, cold and emotional film cause in film it's shown all bad and brutal things that happen in life and i must say that scarface 1983 is one of the best movies ever next to godfather
Marko3236 5 months ago
best scarface movie is with al pacino why?? i will give you reasons:Al pacino acted tony montana really good, when tony montana started to get greedy taking too much coke al pacino acted like some lunatic you know on last scene"YOU STUPID MARICON"!! when he says i mean scarface 1983 has better scenes and actors are freaking amazing AL PACINO THE BEST!!!but what did you expect from a movie from 1932??well this movie is good but scarface 1983 is much greater than 1932.Sorry scarface 1932 fanboys.

In my film class from years ago we were suppose to look for a hidden 'X' somewhere in the scene following every death, did you spot some? =)
ViperRob42 5 months ago
@ViperRob42 wat does the X's mean exactly?
playboy5hawty92 5 months ago
@playboy5hawty92 idk just something the director had in the scene right after a death, some are obvious and others are hidden in the background, like an X from the window shadow n stuff
ViperRob42 5 months ago
The basic plot of the film is identicle..... so they are very similar
colliric 5 months ago
The 80's version is almost a word for word remake of this film. Oliver Stone was so stoned when he wrote this (he admitted as much) that it seems he just remembered everything he saw from the '32 version and went with it. Thanks for the post; and like the whore house boss says, "Keep 'em coming!"

A very fine sex scene in a great motion picture.
