Saw SD in NZ last night! Love the music but without Larry's style, just a bit flat.Donald Fagen a bit lazy with the lyrics.Listen to your records again Fagen and be wowed...it's all there...and this is what your fans pay to hear.3 girl backing vocals, great !....but girls singing lead on 'Dirty Work' did't work, one voice a little flat in parts.
Fantastic attention to recording production detail NOT evident in live show.An investment in having Larry Carlton on tour would have scored you extra$
Larry uses his lead playing as his "vocals",, just as any great singer uses the best notes, and harmonic choices in accompaniments with the other musical voices, be it other singers, or instruments. That is his approach, and it certainly does work! When a non-singing guitarist can deliver the shivers with a few notes from his axe, he is doing everything right!!!
Wonderful to hear Larry all through the years on so many cuts done by successful and weathly people .... definately found the connection to his soul and bares it for you in a protected but vunerable way ..... music is the sound of emotion ... just listen ...
I think Carlton is a fantastic guitarist, and anyone who praises shredding over melodic playing obviously has a very shallow understanding of and relationship to music.
Steely dan made him a ledgend. Maybe for those who were not hip to his work. The Crusaders? SD was incredible work but only a short phase. Jeez to put Larry Carlton in a mold is bullshit.
@TheIrishlad12 went to see the Dan at Wembley in 1998, and was really disappointed!...everything was turned up to volume 10 and sounded awful. They were there totally for the money and nothing else...will never see them again!
Anyone who DARES assume that Larry Carlton cannot absolutely FLY; I mean, PICK THE SHIT out of the guitar needs to hear "Point It Up" from the very rare "Mr.335 Live in Japan" album (yeah, those big, vinyl things). Pretty much that entire record, as a matter of fact. He's better than, say, Malmsteen in every conceivable way, guitaristically and musically. And the band's also on a different and much higher plateau, as well.
Oh man,I want a Valley Art guitar. When I saw Lukather start to use his new Musicman "Luke",I couldnt believe it.But Musicman has proven they make real great guitars. But still...such a Valley Art ohhhhh droool.:)
@MajorD04 True that! Mr. Carlton is a legend based solely on the work he did with Steely Dan IMHO. Notice I state that without mentioning the great body of work outside of Steely Dan.
Try transcribing the stuff before you write it off as simplistic. One of Larry's signatures and that made his reputation is that he weaves complex lines in with some of the pentatonic stuff, diatonic , etc., try the line at 3:23 , for example. Just because it isn't Malmsteen style 32nd notes doesn't make it simple.
Has the look of a McLaughlin about him...constantly amazed and delighted with what's happening with his guitar...lucky man. I'm just amazed with mine, even after 40 years. When does that enlightened delight happen?
It was a little kid that shot him too. Larry went home and the kid was in his house burglarizing him. Shot him in the neck. I saw him play when he released "On Solid Ground" after that. His voice was still very strained when he spoke.
I have seen him a few times before and after that and he is always great. He really enjoys what he does too. One of the real "human" people in the industry.
It's amazing how a great backing band can make the simplest of guitar parts sound good. He's barely playing anything but the simplest pentatonic licks here. Not that LC doesn't have grea tmoments on other tracks, but this is rather unimpressive.
This is one of the most intelligent statements in regard to music, that I have read on youtube. Too many of the young ones think that licks that are musically unintelligible, are "great" because of the speed involved. Not true. Give me "musicality" over instrumental masturbation any day!
It isn't about the backing band. A real lead guitar is the main voice of the entire song, and it is all about how the lead guitarists plays his voice, how well he can execute it, and just how good he makes it sound. That isn't something that comes easy.
Maybe some of this are those you know terribly easy pentatonic licks but have you ever played them and sounded like this. Its not the equipment, the custom shop guitar its years of experience and playing to sound this good playing those pentatonic scales. Hes got great phrasing, timing and tone...that aint simple just go try it.
It pains me to say it, but let's hear your simplified attempt at Layla over the backing track of your choice. But remember to keep it simple - an art in itself, keeping the notes simple, but making every single one resonate to its ultimate potential.... over to you...
the valley arts larry carlton model he is playing was his main axe for a number of years... (i have a very similar one, pre samick standard pro, same 7/8 size body with p90's instead of emgs) he is back to his 335
ive got one of the early standard pros as well. I've played it for years but i gotta say I'm actually not too keen on it. Mines got the emgs and they are just clinical. Its a superpractical, easy to play well executed guitar but somehow soulless. Im back to fender and feeling much better
oh - if i had a dumble ... I'm making do with a 71 fender super reverb ;0)
Actually the slight muddiness of a marshall amp through a 4 * 12 tends to cover the sense of sterilty a bit with that guitar. But im seriously thinking of putting some high output passive single coils in there - but im not sure how it will react to being not active ...
@whynottalklikeapirat stop killing yourself and try it on acoustic, keep it simple...with an under saddle percussive....and a touch of reverb...a bit of compression...a tad of chorus/flange without too much presence...oh and the gate thing..echo at 450 msecs is good as well. Just keep it simple!!!!
@steelydad It was a random shooting in 1988. SHattered his vocal chord and did significant nerve damage, so he had to retrain himself to play. Then completed an album nine months later. For the record, Larry is not embarrassed to say he will take long stretches away from his guitar to keep his playing fresh sounding.
"On Solid Ground" came out after he was shot and was considered his "comeback" album. Josie was one of the tracks from this album. On the bio for this album, it was also announced that he started a charity called "HIP" (Helping Innocent People) to help those financially devastated by random acts of violence. Larry's the man!
Great talent that Larry Carlton. Must have been cold in the studio. Larry used his hair to warm his neck while the keyboard guy used a scarf! Thanks for posting!

there's nothing wrong with simplicity. the object is not to impress you, it's to move you. stop thinking of the guitar and music as a competition.
