  • what was the blue flash?

  • @pendejadafcc camera flash

  • It's a good video no doubt, but i agree with @attaintruefreedom , it could have been hazardous if people seated too close got hurt with flying rubble!

  • failed at 900,000 lb or 408 metric ton

  • note: crushes at 0:48

  • I spent many a night in Talbot Hall, where this video was taken.

Kind of sad though that while I'm an UIUC engineering alum I never got to see the concrete crushing in person.

    ILL-INI!

  • i want to see this done with aerogel

  • sounds like an auction

  • hahaha WOW!

Now i want one of that!

  • Besides that the amount of weight held is quite impressive, imagine having to build a machine that can not only push down with over a million pounds of force, but be able to recognize the moment the object below it gives way and pull back all that downward force.

  • Once the load cell recognizes that the rate of the load increase decreases with time, that's when the operator stops it.

Or when the concrete breaks :)

  • @Nexxion its done hydraulically so its not going to fly out of control when it breaks! you can't compress a liquid so thats why it didn't much after it crushed it!

  • oooo

  • No.

    Just one big safety glass.

  • No safety glass for the 'audience' ... ?

  • Can anyone tell me what is it good for ??

  • The demonstration is less about the crusher (which is impressive, to be sure) and probably more to show the compressive strength of the concrete.

  • Concrete needs to tested before any construction project to ensure it withstands the loads intended for it, I spent a whole summer testing cylinders like this one, although much smaller, for the Illinois DOT. Two samples of a mixture for every project are sent in and tested, if both pass you can assume the method works.

  • WoW! 450 000 kg

  • actually if u look closely you can see a Plexiglas wall in front of the audience. There wasn't any danger here.

  • as you can see The Pressuring devices Stops Just a few cms down the core rupture that means its thinked to not blow the pieces away.

  • I wonder how they were so certain that wasn't going to be dangerous for the audience? It would seem with force like that, the chance of a piece of rubble shooting out would be very likely.

  • Yea, this was also my first thought. It's an very stupid experiment which could cause servere damage to the audience.

  • They have viewing shields in front of the audience, look closely

  • wow that's awesome!

  • fascinating!
