  • Is there a guide that shows how to do this? I have a Commodore 64 and want to get rid of the need of a ton of floppies.

  • @StompySan You can build an X1541 cable from this diagram: sta . c64 . org / x1541c . html. It's pretty easy :)

  • @Psylicium OK, I have the cable ready, but I am not too sure on how to use the software. I couldn't find any real guides on the official site.

  • I think I have the same model of Stinkpad... lol... the NiMH battery went sour, but I ripped it out and it works fine. Except the screen got smashed at some point. Using it for a C64 external HDD sounds like an excellent idea... if only I had a C64, lol. Time to hit ebay.

  • Looks like alot of work, but so worth it.

  • you dont have to type .bat ...

  • @thecooldude9999 I know, but I renamed go64hdd.bat to 64hdd.bat (same name as the executable), so I did it to make sure it was the batch file, and not the program itself I was executing.

  • @Psylicium ah ok thats what i thought... nice job i will be makeing myself a cable soon and trying it with my 128

  • So, this cable doesn't need 386-486 after all, just pure DOS right?

I want to do the same thing. (emulating floppy drive)

  • @bbankrablo Yep, that's all it needs. 64HDD prefers MSDOS 6.22, and you can get a bootable ISO image at allbootdisks(.)com(/)download(/)iso.html. But be aware that 64HDD doesn't support multiload games that uses fastloaders. Other than that, it does the job very well :)

  • @Psylicium

Is it really a X1541 cable, not XE1541?

Because the seller said it isn't working over 486 PC-s. And I see your video.

I can set the port type in BIOS. (SPP-EPP etc), don't know does it matter.

Don't want to buy a expensiver cable, can't afford for that. And it's rare here.

  • @bbankrablo Yes, it's a plain and simple X1541 cable without diodes, resistors and stuff :) It's built from this diagram: sta(.)c64.org(/)x1541c(.)html. AFAIK, you _could_ run into some problems with certain chipsets and motherboards, but I have used both a desktop PC and this laptop without problems, so I wouldn't worry too much about this :) My parallel port is set to Bi-directional. I can choose from Output only, ECP and EPP, but it's only working if I choose Bi-directional.

  • @Psylicium

    Thanks a lot! :D

    I can choose from:

    - SPP

    - EPP

    - ECP

    - ECP + EPP

    No BPP :(

  • @bbankrablo You should be able to get it working with SPP according to sta.c64.org :)

"The X1541 cable is the original cable. It requires an SPP or PS/2 parallel port and it's compatible with all Commodore machines and drives that have the usual serial bus port."

  • I like it :D it brings back memories :D:D Nice linking too ;)

  • dude, im sorry what i said. c64s are actually really cool. i hope you forgive me.

  • @Dell0304 It's okay - I forgive you :)

  • @Psylicium thank you =) also, what can you so on a C64? wasn't that like the first pc?

  • @Dell0304 Yeah, you could call it the first PC - the first PC "regular" people could actually afford to buy. That's why it became the single most sold computer ever - about 30 million(!) units during the 80's. I got my first back in 1987, and have had several more through the years. I have sent you a PM with details :)

  • @Psylicium thanks, but how do i play c64 games and stuff if i dont have one? oooh.......with the emulator. but i dont have any leftover computers. =( but thanks!

  • what can you do on a C64?
