When I have started training rolls I couldn't understand how people can use them for landing from so big heights because they were painfull for me, even had small arm injure(!). And today after I watched this tutorial I saw what mistakes I have done before. Now everything is all right and I'm surprised that it works so well :D Thank you very much, it is very helpfull :-)
you guys do gr8 tutorials very easy to understand and clear the way they are, what would make them even better than they are is a little talking awsome tutorials
Thank you so much for this tutorial! C: It explains all the various steps that comes with doing the roll, and helps us beginners become better at parkour. I've been "rolling" for quite a while, but I've never been confident enough to move on to a solid surface until now, because I was unsure if I was doing it correctly.
living in a place where i didnt know anyone who did parkour i hadto train myself and your tutorials are wats helped me do so well as to get compliments on my execution from proffesionals thanx Urban Current :D
God my Hip!!!!! When I do it on grass even with a great height, my roll is not bad but idk how the pro's do it in concrete man, its soo painful, only part of my roll tht hurts is my hip
@blubablubahumbug I finally learned to roll man, I kept on practicing like hell, I did it on the floor in my room, I practiced with like blankets rolled up on the ground n when I did it I didn't feel pain anywhere on my body I was like ok now its time to do it on the floor....n did it and it didnt hurt!! I made my roll really round like 90 degrees and make it really really fast, maybe rolling on the grass for more than 2 sec is okay but the ground u need 2 do it fast!! Don't give up, keep trying
@urbancurrent hey this tutorial helped a little, i still cant get my roll right, wud u guys plz hel me...? i bruise my shoulder, hip, and the area above my hip, and hit my back hard... plz help, check my channel for my rolls , plz plz help guys :)
Lol at first I was like "What the fuck am I doing wrong? IT hurts on grass!" But then I watched the vid again later and found out that I was hitting my shoulder if I wasn't using my arms to absorb the energy. So yeah with that! URBAN CURRENT IS THE BEST! They tell you all the problems~!
I haven't seen a better video than this to help with my rolls.
I have a huge bruised knot on my shoulder blade from rolling incorrectly. I could never seem to go across my back diagonally, and was always stuck with one side of my back being completely overused. This is the only video that helped me realize why.
@Junjokar That helped, but I've already begun to roll without the hand positioning.
It had a lot to do with the exact positioning of my body and how to lean and aim in the directions necessary to avoid virtually collapsing on my back. I had used Ryan Doyle's video tutorial for reference for my first two days of practice and he did fine... but he wasn't specific enough to address all of the little problems I was having.
In the end, learning that hand positioning was a lifesaver, though.
My shoulder hurts like hell when I roll on concrete. I must be doing something wrong because it's not that bad with grass or carpet but it's excruciating on hard surfaces. It's mainly that arched structure on the upper-right portion of the shoulder blade (I forget what it's called lol) Is there anything I can do to avoid this so I can roll on concrete successfully?
@Kizales Try using your arms to take more impact and lower you closer to the ground, and try landing further down your shoulder, avoiding that top spot.
@Jaksmooth456 Well yes, the scapula is the term for the entire shoulder blade, I was mainly referring to that arch, or "dune," that runs diagonally across the scapula.
@TheTagStudios I also am having trouble with this. I'm just starting out in parkour, but I think you have to absorb more force with your arms, and land further down your shoulder, as to avoid hitting the blade.
@homegrove123 Yeah, I have practiced and mastered the roll. :D What I was doing wrong was diving and rolling to early on my arm, I kept trying and got it. Diving completely over the shoulder until it is the rounded part, and then rolling diagonally across to my hip. :)
every time i roll i go sideways instead of foward, its like my body doesn't want me to go foward and it forces me to go sideways. Any help is appreciated.

@PedroPaulo744 I had that problem too. Just really work on tucking your head into the shoulder opposite the one you're rolling over. It should keep you from bumping your head at all.
One thing I always do wrong is landing and going into a pk-roll.
I bend my knees past 90* and it also takes some time to get into the roll, so I feel a lot of pressure on my feet. How can I become better at landing with rolls?
@patrikdensmarte land from your jump with your weight forwards of your feet. DONT bend and absorb when dropping from height. Instead use your legs like springs and shoot yourself forward into the roll. This is call reverse blocking.
ive always been told to place my arm inside the area and by this vid i see it get out side and idk how to do it this way :/ i learnd one way but its very difrent from this one in a few tecnics
OMFG< i finally figured out wqhat i did wrong. I was rolling all on the same side which is basically like slamming my shoulder down on the ground. thanks to you, it doesnt even hurt anymore!
Hmmm... I for sure have shit experience compared to you, but I think the roll at 0:08 is not ideal. You don't recoil at all ( see that vid too youtube[dot]com/watch?v=0JoBLxFKkbM ). Also, in my opinion it's not good to begin the roll with your knee, you understand well the motion in a real situation. :)

I'm no expert, but he does say that you reach with your rolling arm as if trying to reach the opposite knee. It makes sense that if you do this right, you will pull your shoulder into the roll so that you don't simply lead into the ground with it.
Just for the record, Ozzi himself said once you have the roll down, it should not hurt at all. Not that your shoulder hurts when you start and then it goes away, not that your hip bone get stronger after doing it for a while; once you have it down, nothing should hurt and it should be smooth and clean.
This video makes it look so easy, but it's definitely not easy. Trust me, I've been trying to learn the roll for the last few days and I've messed up a LOT (thankfully on carpet!). Anyways, I think there should be a video made where an experienced traceur helps a parkour novice learn the roll. It would be a lot more informative... just an idea.
Isn't it bad to practice rolling in crouch position? Shouldn't you be practicing what you're actually going to be doing? I've been practicing off of a 5 in a half foot wall, onto my front yard. When I do it wrong it hurts a little, but it's much better practice then doing it in crouching position. You should make a tutorial for dive rolls.
ugh i tried a diff roll from a dif video and i did it a few times okay on grass so i was like okay well i need to do it on cement to see if im doing it okay so i tried it and i hurt the right side of my lower back its like my hip but its on my back you know and i just tried this on carpet and i hit wrong and i felt it again am i doing something wrong? plzzz help
@dslaya550 Your probably hitting too hard, make sure it's a full roll like a circle rolling, and not like a square, if you understand me. I tought this to myself awhile back, and I learned on grass with a slight angle downwards, so I used gravity for the rolling motion, and was able to work on my form better. I'm no experts, but maybe this will help. Cement is done the same way, but watch your form, don't smash your hip down.
I've used this and Ryan Doyle's vid to help me learn the roll. Thanks for the great tips. Today was the first day I actually did a smooth roll without any pain (from jumping off a 1-story building no less!) But aside from that, I always get the wind knocked out of me and have some pain on my back/shoulder. Any tips? Thanks.
Whenever i roll it turns out like im going to the side, like ill start out straight, but when i get out of the roll im sideways of before, but i can still get up easily. Is that OK?
(this is awsome!!!!!) but i need some help with the rolls, cuz i cant get it to not hurt my shoulder or my hip too much. pls commment or pm me!!!!!1!!11!
I always hit my right shoulder on the ground to hard. It really hurts. Is there a spot on the back were you're suppose to impact to the ground first? [ besides your hands]
@whitefang514 Your shoulder should not even touch the ground. Put your hand on your back. Do you feel that patch of padding? that is what you should be landing on.
If U don't, you will mess up your shoulders for real. And U aren't really supposed to land on the hands per se. Rather more on the side area of the palms and roll along the length of the forearm to the patch on your back. I hope this helps U a little.
@onimotoko Oh alright that clears things up, I couldn't figure how to roll on that part of my back with out having my shoulder touch the ground first. Thanks alot :]
im not sure if its a problem but im left handed and when i do rolls i use my right shoulder and roll to the left hip, is there something wrong with that?
I love urban current. The first tutorial on parkour I watched was this video, 2 years ago. My roll has been good and bad at times. Finally on a whim I come back to this video for the memories. I had been having trouble with my hand placement, and when I saw Ozzis, I decided to try it. WOW I can't believe that worked! A few more months and it should be perfect. Thanks so much urbancurrent!
The last rolls off of the building onto the grass... It shows them smashing their legs real hard into the ground. Isn't the point of this roll to land on arms and absorb the impact and kind of move it onto your back? (like he taught in the video)
you cant jump off a building and dive onto your arms the kenetic energy from your bodyweight will make u smash your head, you land with your feet and go straight into the roll that takes the pressure off your legs. jump....land on feet and take the impact and then roll straight away.
whenever i roll, the bone behind my shoulder sticks out. So when i roll, that bone is the 1st part 2 hit the ground when i initiate the roll also the roll is ending at the middle of my lower back not the left hip. can any1 help?
I can't get it right, ive watched the video and tryed loads of times but i just cant get my form right, I cant get the shoulder to do the roll. Ive tryed the wall run and i think i can do basic vaults pretty well but i cant get the roll
i once went in only one karate class and they tought me how to roll when people push you really hard, thus, its been a really long time i forgot how to roll and last week i tired to remember and i got it but i had a rough pain on my shoulder :S and i cant roll cuz its snowing here
ok, ure gonna have to play it, and really see how u land on your roll, u might think u are rolling down to your shoulder, but it may look awkward if someone sees it.
personally what i do , is make a top body rotation, like a side roll, while going foward,
@kboy3141 so do i. it helps get the fear of rolling on your shoulder away. i used to roll up on my shoulder and nearly broke it, now i just rotate off to my left while i roll so it doesnt hurt at all. im still afraid to try it on concrete, the last time i tried it didnt hurt it worked alright, im gonna try again :)
yes so it works for u. but i can do it either way, i can go directly down and over my shoulders or as u do, slightly to the left or right (rolling arm) and roll.
oh and tucking ure head will help, if i have not sed b4.
ya i had this same prob what u do is dont roll on the top of your should roll more on the back like when your going into ur roll hold your sell up more with your arms till your over the top hold your self you till like your sholder is diaginal with the ground thats the best i could help but i might be able to put a vid up if u need more help
When i jump i usually bend my legs and fall in my toes then when landing bend your body and give a great impulse to the front if you feel a little pain its your shoulder getting usted to it but its helpful if you have someone telling you if you're doing it wrong
i learned that when landing into a roll, you should land with yours knees at 45 degrees. then go into the roll. This will allow you to turn your downward momentum into forward momentum. hope this helps.
When I have started training rolls I couldn't understand how people can use them for landing from so big heights because they were painfull for me, even had small arm injure(!). i think you should not practise your rolls on soft surfaces too long. you cant spot mistakes on soft surfaces.

Any tips? Thanks.

@SamEighteen Tips?! Stop jumping off roofs.

Whenever i roll it turns out like im going to the side, like ill start out straight, but when i get out of the roll im sideways of before, but i can still get up easily. Is that OK?

lionsrage9 1 year ago
@lionsrage9 You just have to keep your hands forward so most of the kinetic energy goes into your arms.

I always hit my right shoulder on the ground to hard. It really hurts. Is there a spot on the back were you're suppose to impact to the ground first? [ besides your hands]
whitefang514 1 year ago
@whitefang514 Your shoulder should not even touch the ground. Put your hand on your back. Do you feel that patch of padding? that is what you should be landing on.
If U don't, you will mess up your shoulders for real. And U aren't really supposed to land on the hands per se. Rather more on the side area of the palms and roll along the length of the forearm to the patch on your back. I hope this helps U a little.
onimotoko 1 year ago
@onimotoko Oh alright that clears things up, I couldn't figure how to roll on that part of my back with out having my shoulder touch the ground first. Thanks alot :]

Is it normal for my shoulder and upper arm to hurt after doing like 15 of these?
Chrisbkreme18 1 year ago
usually i roll left to right, with my whole body, is that alright also?
sirkaaa 1 year ago
These rolls are like the ones done in Judo right?
cody4432a 1 year ago
god damn you must fuck up your hands
frostbytet17 1 year ago
I follow this step by step but I always seem to slightly drag the side of my head across the floor. What should I do to prevent that?
And is it good for your shoulder to hurt and get red when you first start doing rolls?

KouroshDK 1 year ago
@KouroshDK are u right handed if so then push up with right foot and hand then continue to run!
1joel8 1 year ago
im not sure if its a problem but im left handed and when i do rolls i use my right shoulder and roll to the left hip, is there something wrong with that?
theparkournooby 1 year ago
@theparkournooby

wertyuiop223 1 year ago
@wertyuiop223 Nah, just like some left handers pitch or bat right in baseball. As long as its comfortable and it works you should be fine.

Thanks so much urbancurrent!

mexicutoner 1 year ago
The last rolls off of the building onto the grass... It shows them smashing their legs real hard into the ground. Isn't the point of this roll to land on arms and absorb the impact and kind of move it onto your back? (like he taught in the video)
AhtiMages 1 year ago
Look up roll tutorial by TK17.
osprey1993 1 year ago
you cant jump off a building and dive onto your arms the kenetic energy from your bodyweight will make u smash your head, you land with your feet and go straight into the roll that takes the pressure off your legs. jump....land on feet and take the impact and then roll straight away.

This is how I normally roll, although doing a Granbie at Wrestling could be the reason I roll on my shoulders.
Finalmemento 2 years ago
I can't get it right, ive watched the video and tryed loads of times but i just cant get my form right, I cant get the shoulder to do the roll. Ive tryed the wall run and i think i can do basic vaults pretty well but i cant get the roll

are you suppost to land on your shoulder or your back?
DarkstarrLu 2 years ago
land on our shoudler mate
kboy3141 2 years ago
but it hurts really bad when i do that.
DarkstarrLu 2 years ago
ok, ure gonna have to play it, and really see how u land on your roll, u might think u are rolling down to your shoulder, but it may look awkward if someone sees it.
personally what i do , is make a top body rotation, like a side roll, while going foward,
kboy3141 2 years ago
@kboy3141 so do i. it helps get the fear of rolling on your shoulder away. i used to roll up on my shoulder and nearly broke it, now i just rotate off to my left while i roll so it doesnt hurt at all. im still afraid to try it on concrete, the last time i tried it didnt hurt it worked alright, im gonna try again :)
rabbitofdeth 2 years ago
yes so it works for u. but i can do it either way, i can go directly down and over my shoulders or as u do, slightly to the left or right (rolling arm) and roll.
oh and tucking ure head will help, if i have not sed b4.
kboy3141 2 years ago
when i roll i feel a dull pain in my shoulder towars the back it feels more like muscle fatigue rather than just pain.
i think im ok
shubiguby 2 years ago
you are either doing it wrong, landing to hard or just need to practice more to toughin up

When i jump i usually bend my legs and fall in my toes then when landing bend your body and give a great impulse to the front if you feel a little pain its your shoulder getting usted to it but its helpful if you have someone telling you if you're doing it wrong
explosion231 2 years ago
i learned that when landing into a roll, you should land with yours knees at 45 degrees. then go into the roll. This will allow you to turn your downward momentum into forward momentum. hope this helps.
