The answer is never, unless the Japanese constitution is changed. They're geared toward defense of their territory only.

Japanese Constitution has been recently changed to make JSDFs able to go in a country to maintain peace from themselves ( Without UNO " Invitation " ). But yes, unless the Constitution is changed again, it will never happen.

I worked with the JMSDF when I was in the Navy in many exercises. A very professional Navy and impressive with what fleet they are allowed to have under the constitution. I have alot of respect for the Japanese sailors and for the people themselves. Japan and the USA GREAT allies.

We almost gave up our carriers because we were ashured that all wars would be nuclear and that the navy was no longer needed.

I am Japanese, and I know the terrible thing that the Japanese army did druing WW2. But that doesn't mean that all of the Japanese are evil. Even we got nuced, we thank GHQ because they changed the Japan to a better country. Japanese love their own country, and they are continuing to protect their own culture even the other country thinks it's strange. America and japan are allied. I hope we will be friends forever.
