MR ? this man is satin -his ass was pounded in prison --he is gay and of satin--not that he is a fake --He needs to die ---yet the lord allows this mess to rob people of there hard earned money..
@flipwiggins Both Baker and Pat Robertson often used chalkboards [or erasable clapboards] with pointers to explain to folks how the evil in the world works. Glenn Beck uses this same method [hearsay and innuendo amounting to very little under actual scrutiny-but given importance by simply being displayed as such] to link together and prove his paranoia.
When you have an episode of Keith Olbermann in striped gym shorts doing exercises in front a bunch of chubby ladies get back to me. Else-STFU!
Once a very long time ago I heard "Tammy Faye" say this, "I have to wear this makeup", It's my trade mark".... Well I say, I thought that "Jesus" was the trademark? Something was and is very wrong with these people!.
Well the old tricks of the trade are back. Yes scripture does say that "All have sinned and fallen short of Gods glory, but the pastors and preachers are held more accountable!. For Jim Bakkerrrrrr to get back on TV and sell "Food Buckets" is deplorable!, he should of never taken up the pulpit again for his actions in the PTL scandal!. Now he is selling again, that's all that PTL was just another "QVC" channel past and present! SHAME ON YOU JIM BAKKERRRRRRRRR
guys look up send me your money by suicidal tendencies! and miracle man by OZZY just for some good laughs! great songs too so yeah rock out mophuckas!
Two pieces of crap together. Jim is a lying low life. And Jerry "Geraldo" Rivera is a jewish guy that tries to sell himself as a hispanic man raised on the streets. The are both equally worthless liars!
I think I said he is Jewish. But to say that he is a "jewish guy who sells himself as a hispanic man" is idiotic. Hispanic people can adhere to the jewish faith.
I agree that a hispanic person can be jewish. My problem with "jerry" is that he never admits to being jewish. But he never hesitates to play the "I'm hispanic" card. He is a hypocrite that tries to be something he is not.
again with the "Jerry and the "hyprocrite that tries to be something he is not". He's half hispanic, how is he being something he is not???... Has your narrowminded mind ever thought that maybe he see's himself the bearer of a social responsibility: the responsibility of giving a journalistic voice to Hispanics.
How is wanting someone to be who they are bigoted? Jerry didn't grow up speaking spanish. He didn't grow up on the streets. It's kind of like a white guy that grew up in the suburbs trying to act like he is a thug from the hood.
Remembering his trial, the federal mail fraud charges brought against him were far too harsh for what actually happened and resulted in his spending 5 years in prison. The Charlotte Observer and Judge Potter were clearly wanting to be rid of him, not for any crimes he committed but for giving the Charlotte area a bad image. He was convicted of defrauding donors by promising lifetime visits to Heritage USA that he could not accommodate if all came and no further construction occurred.
Someone, somewhere once said "beware of false Prophets"
This guy was obvious one of those who we were warned about.
These types of people are not true decent religous people. They use the bible and the church to scam others . They are basically con artists and can come from both sides of the political realm.
@eldorado61guy yes they did! if my priest was rollin in a rolls while i was eating kraft dinner! i would be extremely angry! that is slapping me in the face. If he on teh other hand was walkin and taking my money to the local childrens hospital fine i would even give a ride! but they got caught in the middle of a spending spree! building a religious theme park! all the things the good book had in it about greed these guys were sloshing around like pigs in shit with peoples faith paying for it!
@Megadeaf75 I understand your point though in the case of Jim and Tammy noone was told they wouldn't have a place to live if they didn't pay. God in heaven sees these people giving will recompense them in time. If you eat Kraft Dinner, you are fortunate. I can go two months without food. Jim and Tammy didn't come as government bashing in doors. They asked.. You faith is lacking if you give to fools.
My God, the irony of Jim Baker talking about "where the money goes". Taken just at face value, just the interview by itself, Jim did a good job. Very well spoken and articulate. Which is why he was able to con so many people for so long.
I am 45 now but was at PTL During the fall of it. I say people I saw people lose there homes and all most of important their faith in Christ. Some who never went back to him befor their deaths and are not in heaven today due to Jim's works here, Now he doing it all over again. My question to him is how do you say sorry to ones in hell due to you. How about it Jim??? How do you say sorry to the lost due to your works!!!!

Charles, no doubt people were misled, and no doubt that Jim Bakker would redo that portion of his life if he could, but life isn't that way. People are not in hell because of Jim Bakker. If people lost their faith it's because of themselves. If people put more faith in a man and his message than in the Bible itself how is that the Man's fault? I was never a fan of PTL, I mocked it myself, but sin is sin. God's forgiven him, it's really time that the christian community do the same.
It is sad to think that people would lose their faith in Christ because of the action of a man. That is why it is so important to base our faith on God's Word and not on another person. Human beings will always fail us, but God always remains faithful.
He was convicted and also wrote a book , " I was wrong "and exposed everything. Bunch of false teachers out there folks.... Read the Bible and examine this folks!

wasn't he aquitted of hiscrimes in 1996 after spending five years in jail. Who are you to judge. Did you personally study the case or did you just believe the stuff you were spoonfed by a biased media. Your skeletons are probably darker than his.
nope, he was never ever aquitted. this guy's skeletons include conning folks out of millions of dollars. all in the name of jesus. i don't lie, i hate lies, jim bakker is a liar.
i dont have to do any research, jim bakker is a convicted felon, he was tried and convicted, not aquitted. thats what he went to prison ok? because he was convicted and not aquitted.
@ihaveaverybadcold Pretty Self Explanatory.Bakker to prison for a long time for ripping people off in the 80's.I'm surprised he ever got out.Alive at least. He crossed to some Club Fed with all the comforts of home.Meat market fell and he was driving a Volkswagen. No one cries about the lumps on my head.I'm ugly,I don't like life.No one cares about anyone. It's like sinking in quick sand and people with snakes walk by but give it no relative thought. Will I be in Astral?Do You BELIEVE?

He may have been a good person that did bad things! its not far fetched there are millions out there that are exactly this way. Ya know that old saying "Hate The Crime Not The Person Who Committed it"
Geeze......to this day these two dopes are still flapping their super charged mouths on television. And people actually watch these shmucks?!?!!!! UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!
Geraldo looks like a 70s porn star... which is fitting, these two scumbags tried to screw America with their garbage shows. Would someone get that damn phone?!
In case anyone is interested, what Jim Bakker was speaking of in this video became the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability [ECFA], the largest Christian organization which provides disclosure of financial details of major American ministries.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A very rational interview; Bakker comes across well. This was, of course, several years before the downfall of the PTL organization. Should Geraldo Rivera share his annual salary and bonus with the public if asked? If not, why not? I remember when Sam Donaldson asked Jerry Falwell what his salary was and Falwell said '$100,000.' After answering, Falwell turned around and asked Donaldson the same question - and Donaldson refused to answer...what a joke...
You've got to be kidding, johnlorican. When did Geraldo Rivera or Sam Donaldson ever ask their television viewing public to send in donation money?Rivera and Donaldson's income was based on their market value.Corporate sponsors
paid the networks to air commercials during Rivera and Donaldson's broadcasts. Those sponsors knew exactly what they were paying for. Those sponsors were also wealthy enough to absorb any losses they might have entailed.
This was, of course, several years before Bakker was literally caught with his pants down. This was, of course, the time Bakker was hitting up his gullible faith-filled viewers for cash in the name of God and living a lavish lifestyle. You honestly believe Falwell only took $100 K

If you don't agree with the ministry or business operations of Bakker (as I was, also), then you don't support it. It's that simple. What Bakker did was morally wrong, and he paid a tremendous price for his behavior. Rather than call people names (Bakker or me), Jesus Christ wants us to focus on our OWN misdeeds, not gleefully 'jump' on somebody else's sins...
Jim Bakker used the medium of television as a weapon. He robbed his victims by camera rather than gun.He should not be given access to the same weapon he used to perpetrate the crime against his first victims. He should be banned from appearing on television in the capacity of a salesman regardless of whether he's selling God or floor wax. When did Jesus Christ ever advise anyone to bury their head in the sand?My OWN misdeeds did not cost
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Jim Bakker was interested in establishing a Christian vacation retreat and theme park for families to participate via timeshares. Because of this, he asked for donations from supporters. Accompanying this was a false 'prosperity gospel' - Bakker became wealthy and his staff mismanaged the funds. It wasn't necessarily deliberate; his group were very poor businessmen and many people lost their timeshare money - and, obviously, Bakker paid a heavy price for this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Mr. Rivera and Mr. Donaldson demanded high salaries for their work (far more than Falwell, etc.) - and then sit in judgement of the salaries of others. If Bakker's supporters were content with his salary, I'm in no position to question what he earned. I was never a supporter of Bakker because I didn't approve of the operation (overall, an embarrassment) but I have NO regard for a national media that earns millions - and the salaries of another operation.
Falwell was not as big as ABC.ABC collected revenue from corporate sponsors. The viewers themselves did not contribute to Rivera and Donaldson's paychecks.PTL's seed money came from donations sent in by its viewers.A great many did not send their money in to suppliment Bakker's lifestyle. They were swindled by a pig who paid a church secretary off for a poke.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nobody is defending Jim Bakker's behavior from the televangelist scandals from the 1980's. My point is that it is disingenuous to ask in a televised interview what a person's salary is - if you yourself are not willing to share that information about you. The idea that commercial television is 'free' is, of course, absurd. The public is paying the incredible salaries of these folks (through increased product costs via advertising) who sit in judgement of others.
A televangelist's personal income should be open to public scrutiny because the public is called upon to pay them directly with donation money. When viewers of network televison buy existing usable products like toothpaste and cars they have those products at their disposal.Rivera and Donaldson did not display toothpaste and cars during their broadcasts. You could turn the channel during the commercials.
Bakker and Falwell held up God as the product they were selling during their broadcasts.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree - but it's my belief that those who are doing the 'scrutinizing' should make themselves accountable to the public as well; it's not a one-way street. Bakker and Falwell weren't selling 'God as the product;' they were seeking donations for their ministries which involved airtime costs, missions costs, etc. - and you had the freedom to support their efforts. In Bakker's case, money was severely mismanaged and some of it went towards a lifestyle that didn't sit well with supporters.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Again, I'm not defending Bakker. I feel much of what passes for 'Christian television' is, and was, an embarrassment for most believers in Christ - but there's nothing I can do about it, so I ignore it. What I feel strongly about, however, is a national media that routinely elevates immoral values, preaches a moral relativism (by default), rakes in millions in the process - and then sits in judgement of Christian ministries via their reporting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I left out a few words; I meant to say, "...but I have NO regard for a national media that earns millions - and then questions the salaries of another operation."
The national media is our only true defense against scam artists like Jim Bakker. They shine the ligh on the all too often dark subjects of politics, sex and religion. They earn their money reporting the news that we, the viewers, watch for free.Asking the salary of any man or woman who urge their viewers to send in money in the name of God is not out of line, john. That's good reporting. That's for us, and Jim Bakker's victims to know.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have no problem with the 'national media' acting like a societal watchdog. This issue then becomes - who's watching the national media? Over the last twenty years, a 'counter-cultural' conservative media has grown immensely, largely due to the fact that the mainstream media has had a tremendous bias in what they chose to report and how it was reported. As David Brinkley said shortly before his death, 'the news is whatever we tell the American public what is is...'
Uh-huh.Yeah.Who's watching the national media?Nice diversionary tactic, john. Now what?Is the degree to which some thing is wrong based on how some thing wrong is reported?Aren't some things just wrong regardless of how much or how little attention they receive in press.Would
Jim Bakker be any less guilty if he hadn't been exposed in the media?Maybe Jim could have set up house with Jessica Hahn if the national media hadn't interferred.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's not a 'diversionary tactic' - I'm not into tactics. I'm interested in the TRUTH...and, personally, I sincerely believe the mainstream media is not desirous of the TRUTH. They are desirous of implementing their own agenda and claiming 'objectivity'...and this, of course, has nothing to do with Jim Bakker's misbehavior.
The TRUTH is subjective, john. Not objective. The best that you and I can hope for is that we remain TRUE to what we,
as individuals believe is important.I've never given a penny to Bakker or any of his cronies but I maintain that he should not be allowed back on tv.I'm offended that he has been allowed to return to the very media that allowed him to take advantage of his followers in the first place.
That's not forgiveness, john. That's turning the 'weapon' back over to the 'criminal'.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The truth is subjective? I guess I was always taught that '2 + 2 = 4'...I guess now I'll have to answer, 'it might be, it may not be'...or maybe I'll answer it in today's language - 'whatever'....
Whether a glass is half full or half empty depends on who's receiving the water and who's doing the pouring.'Absolutes' are for those who can't be bothered to examine the circumstances surrounding an issue. If a rich man stole $2 from me for selfish reasons and a poor man stole $2 from me to feed his starving family, I would take their personal circumstances into account and consider it a travesty if both men got the same 4 month jail term.
The 'subjective' truth is how I would end up feeling about having the money stolen from me at the end of the day.I'd make the distinction between the rich man's greed and the poor man's need.
You'd look at the rich man and say "there goes that S.O.B. with my hard-earned $2"
You'd probably look at the poor man and say "There but for the grace of God go I".

'Dateline NBC' reported on the 'danger' of faulty vehicles that risked explosion - and were caught creating footage that depicted exploding trucks. A months before the 2004 election, Dan Rather televised forged documents 'proving' President Bush secretly got out of military service - a blatant lie. Who acts as the 'watchdog' for this? Fortunately, the 'alternative media' exposed these falsehoods - and many others.
Which has nothing to do with anything, john.Faulty reporting in the past is one of the cornerstones of conspiracy nut theories.Stick to the facts pertaining to Jim Bakker's fall from grace. Was Jessica Hahn paid off by PTL enterprises for Bakker's indiscretion? She's got the check to prove it.Did PTL oversell time shares on a property that could not accommodate all the people purchasing time shares?Bakker got the charge to prove it.

I have to clarify something here. There were no timeshares! It was a three night stay free at the Heritage Grand. Jay Bakker said it best. He stated that his dad had been jailed for doing the same thing that Delta Airlines does every day; they overbook airline flights, knowing that not it's not probable that everyone is going to make the flight, and them "bump" them if it is overcrowded.
Do you honestly believe that the average PTL viewer whould have gotten that 'free' hotel stay without paying
the suggested 'donation'?You've clarified your gullibility it you said 'yes'.Funny how Jay Bakker compared his father's bogus hotel package deal to an airlines flight deal. Why wouldn't he compare it to another hotel package deal? It's because Jay Bakker is every bit as full of crap as his father.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm sorry, you're right. I'm a gullible idiot who wouldn't know the sun shining if it shone right into my own eyes. I need to stop rehashing the past because clearly it just brings up more negativity than just moving on. Once again, my apologies.
I never even discussed Bakker's operations - but since you brought it up, I distinctly remember watching the PTL show in the mid-1980's when he sold timeshares (or oversold them as the case may be) to people. I never remember PTL offering timeshares to people for free - or random donations.
Bakker may have a point, but regardless it was an operation with strong mismanagement. What I didn't like was the gaudiness of the studio set and the antics of Tammy Faye Bakker. It amazed me that so many people apparently wanted to support the operation...but television does strange things to the viewer - and the 'performer.'
The man is a crook ,cheat and liar...that is FACT! you can believe or try and justify whatever you want, it makes no difference.
He had an affair, and his secretary wasn't the only one...just the only one he was found out about by paying her off to keep her quiet, believe whatever you want it again makes no difference.

I'm not saying mistakes weren't made at PTL. Heck, even Jim admits his mistakes in a 600 page book! However, I'm not going to argue with you any longer since you seem to think you have superior knowledge and it does me little good to prove anything to someone who has that attitude.
Sins were sinned at PTL,dontbugme2206.Heck, Jim admitted his mistakes for the sake of selling his 600 page book. That's it.That's all.You seem to think Jim Bakker is incapable of lying and cheating because he says he's no longer capable of lying and cheating.
You are inferior to everyone of sound mind for believing in Jim Bakker's innocence and redemption.
Save your money and save yourself.Bakker doesn't need any more GOLD faucets.
MOST of the viewers $ is not ALL. NONE of the viewers sent $ in to have any of those $ go toward paying off Bakker's so called 'partner' (Jessica Hahn) with 'discretionary' funds. When did Jim Bakker go on the air and say
"Give me the moolah, bretheren,Jim Bakker needs gold faucets in his personal bathroom " or "Fork over the dough, brothers and sisters,Jim Bakker needs to top up his 'Sin Allowance'(discretionary funds pot)"?
Bakker lied when he didn't tell ALL of his viewers the truth.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Too bad there were NO gold faucets at PTL or in Jim's house. Too bad Richard Dortch paid Jessica Hahn off, NOT Jim Bakker. Jim had no knowledge of that. Too bad the viewers knew what Jim's house looked like and they knew what kind of car he drove. He brought cameras in his car and home. To say that people were oblivious is absurd.
Jim Bakker took his viewers on a carefully planned tour via television and you believe he showed you everything.Talk about oblivious!Television news cameras captured the GOLD FAUCETS in news stories surrounding the collapse of PTL. Tourists have SEEN those gold faucets IN PERSON.PTL passed the loot on to Jessica Hahn because of JIM BAKKER'S transgressions.Your defense of Bakker is absurd.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There were no gold faucets at PTL regardless of what you try to convince others. Just because they have a gold color doesn't mean that it's real gold. I'm sure you saw that air-conditioned dog house too. Too bad that was an old unit that was used for the heating portion so that the dogs could stay warm in the garage during the winter. What about the 92 million missing from PTL? Oh wait, the Charlotte Observer retracted that story.
There WERE gold faucets regardless of what YOU try to convince yourself of.SOLID GOLD FAUCETS were shown and DISCUSSED in the news reports.Just because Jim Bakker says he's capable of telling the truth doesn't mean Jim Bakker is capable of telling the truth.
Oh wait, Charlotte Observer retraction or not, Bakker lived a lavish, decadent lifestyle on donations sent in for the supposed good works of the PTL Ministry.
You are correct that there is lots of misinformation about PTL. But there were gold faucets. I spent 2 years there and there were gold faucets and drain flanges in a jacuzzi in his executive office in the "pyramid building." I saw them myself. It's not a rumor or second hand info. I know firsthand they were gold, not just colored gold. I have no ill will toward Jim and (RIP) Tammy. But, there was plenty of luxury in the executive offices and in the Bakker home.
The solicitation of $ from Bakker's television viewers was based on a lie.Regardless of whether the courts found him guity or not, Jim Bakker lied to his followers when he told them that their donation money was being used to keep PTL on the air.He would not have received one penny if he told his viewers that their money was being used to support his decadent lifestyle. His sin was aired in public because he erred on the very public medium of television.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
actually, most of viewers $ went toward bakker's insatiable desire to build and expand the theme pk. heritage usa. remember, his was a prosperity ministry & so most of his viewers expected him to live well. it was the media & the public that looked askance at his wealth along w/a dis. att. in charlotte n.c. that hated him.
If you need Jim Bakker to give you hope you're hopeless. These guys are nothing but scammers who live the good life on other peoples money. They are traveling snake oil salesmen, who travel from city to city, put up their little tents, make empty promises, get money, leave and never come back. That's why Jim Bakker got millions of dollars, not because he "believed God." There is no God to believe in and never was.
The media never reports the fact that Jim Bakker's conviction was overturned after he spent almost 5 yrs in prison. The charges were found to be completely without merit.

Jim Bakker was targeted by the Government. He was accused of over selling the percentage of time share units for appropriate availability. He built thousands of units which are still there today.
Has your airline ever oversold your plane seats? He made refunds to anybody who didn't want their timeshare and offered to make other amends. He was never ever charged with stealing any money or anything else.
People that don't know the facts around PTL and Heritage USA should not pass judgement!
what ever came of that "historical meeting" that the 30 evangelicals attended? historical my ass, it was just another bullshit meeting for these elmer gantres. the only historical christian meetings happen in the vatican, since they have a world effect, not among lying hypocrites of no consequence. once their power is gone, or they die, so is their ministeries and vise versa.
This man is back on his feet after he knocked his followers on their collective asses. He broke THEIR banks not his.Bakker is not restored in the very least. He's just RESELLING.Beware of false prophets making real profits, Burke. You'd be right to judge me a fool if I were to believe that this parasite ever acted with God's grace.
I DON'T believe in Jim Bakker.YOU do, however, poor misguided FOOL that you are.

What does my/your/anyone's PERSONAL history have to do with BAKKER'S CRIMES against the PUBLIC?
Bakker went on TELEVISION day after day, week after week, year after year urging his faithful,
trusting followers to give whatever they could to keep him on the air.Was ALL the donation money used to keep Jim ON the air?Or was SOME of it being used to support Jim's decadent lifestyle OFF the air?
Television made Jim Bakker a PUBLIC FIGURE.Television
did NOT make Jim Bakker a CRIMINAL.Jim Bakker's trusting, faithful followers did NOT make Jim Bakker a criminal.JIM BAKKER committed his crimes.Television
was the WEAPON he used to commit those crimes.

Bakker did more good, then he did bad. He started CBN, and the trinity broadcasting network. The devil just got a hold of him, and he made mistakes. No man is perfect.. if you're a Christian you should have a relationship with God first and foremost. Evangelicals, church etc.. are the after effect.
If you people can't learn to forgive people... then why should you be forgiven for your own sins? Sins = disobedience to God first and foremost.
Jim is a man of FRAUD.You have got to be kidding when you ask me if I read Jim's book.Jim Bakker went to prison for LYING.His loyal, faith-filled followers got sucker punched. The majority of them have wised up.

The media never reports the fact that Jim Bakker's conviction was overturned after he spent almost 5 yrs in prison. The charges were found to be completely without merit. He didn't go to prison for lying - he was convicted of mail & wire fraud - both charges later overturned by an "athiest" attorney who sought Bakker out in prison and asked to defend him.
Perhaps you didn't read all of my comment. The mail & wire fraud charges were found to be untrue after he was sent to prison and his conviction over turned. I'm no fan of Bakker's just a fan of the facts and the truth.
'They' got Al Capone on Income Tax Evasion, whatifitstrue. Are you saying that if Big Al had managed to have his conviction overturned he would not have had anything to do with any of the murders taking place in Chicago in the dark days of prohibition?

Had he come forward, confessed and refused to pay her imagine how different it might have been.

God's forgiven him, it's really time that the christian community do the same.
simonhouse7 2 years ago
It is sad to think that people would lose their faith in Christ because of the action of a man. That is why it is so important to base our faith on God's Word and not on another person. Human beings will always fail us, but God always remains faithful.

A very rational interview; Bakker comes across well. This was, of course, several years before the downfall of the PTL organization. Should Geraldo Rivera share his annual salary and bonus with the public if asked? If not, why not? I remember when Sam Donaldson asked Jerry Falwell what his salary was and Falwell said '$100,000.' After answering, Falwell turned around and asked Donaldson the same question - and Donaldson refused to answer...what a joke...
johnlorican 4 years ago
You've got to be kidding, johnlorican. When did Geraldo Rivera or Sam Donaldson ever ask their television viewing public to send in donation money?Rivera and Donaldson's income was based on their market value.Corporate sponsors
paid the networks to air commercials during Rivera and Donaldson's broadcasts. Those sponsors knew exactly what they were paying for. Those sponsors were also wealthy enough to absorb any losses they might have entailed.
westeightyone 4 years ago 7

If you don't agree with the ministry or business operations of Bakker (as I was, also), then you don't support it. It's that simple. What Bakker did was morally wrong, and he paid a tremendous price for his behavior. Rather than call people names (Bakker or me), Jesus Christ wants us to focus on our OWN misdeeds, not gleefully 'jump' on somebody else's sins...
johnlorican 4 years ago
Jim Bakker used the medium of television as a weapon. He robbed his victims by camera rather than gun.He should not be given access to the same weapon he used to perpetrate the crime against his first victims. He should be banned from appearing on television in the capacity of a salesman regardless of whether he's selling God or floor wax. When did Jesus Christ ever advise anyone to bury their head in the sand?My OWN misdeeds did not cost
any group millions of dollars.

Jim Bakker was interested in establishing a Christian vacation retreat and theme park for families to participate via timeshares. Because of this, he asked for donations from supporters. Accompanying this was a false 'prosperity gospel' - Bakker became wealthy and his staff mismanaged the funds. It wasn't necessarily deliberate; his group were very poor businessmen and many people lost their timeshare money - and, obviously, Bakker paid a heavy price for this.
johnlorican 4 years ago

Mr. Rivera and Mr. Donaldson demanded high salaries for their work (far more than Falwell, etc.) - and then sit in judgement of the salaries of others. If Bakker's supporters were content with his salary, I'm in no position to question what he earned. I was never a supporter of Bakker because I didn't approve of the operation (overall, an embarrassment) but I have NO regard for a national media that earns millions - and the salaries of another operation.
johnlorican 4 years ago
Falwell was not as big as ABC.ABC collected revenue from corporate sponsors. The viewers themselves did not contribute to Rivera and Donaldson's paychecks.PTL's seed money came from donations sent in by its viewers.A great many did not send their money in to suppliment Bakker's lifestyle. They were swindled by a pig who paid a church secretary off for a poke.

The public is paying the incredible salaries of these folks (through increased product costs via advertising) who sit in judgement of others.
johnlorican 4 years ago
A televangelist's personal income should be open to public scrutiny because the public is called upon to pay them directly with donation money. When viewers of network televison buy existing usable products like toothpaste and cars they have those products at their disposal.Rivera and Donaldson did not display toothpaste and cars during their broadcasts. You could turn the channel during the commercials.
Bakker and Falwell held up God as the product they were selling during their broadcasts.
westeightyone 4 years ago 7
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I agree - but it's my belief that those who are doing the 'scrutinizing' should make themselves accountable to the public as well; it's not a one-way street. Bakker and Falwell weren't selling 'God as the product;' they were seeking donations for their ministries which involved airtime costs, missions costs, etc. - and you had the freedom to support their efforts. In Bakker's case, money was severely mismanaged and some of it went towards a lifestyle that didn't sit well with supporters.
johnlorican 4 years ago

Again, I'm not defending Bakker. I feel much of what passes for 'Christian television' is, and was, an embarrassment for most believers in Christ - but there's nothing I can do about it, so I ignore it. What I feel strongly about, however, is a national media that routinely elevates immoral values, preaches a moral relativism (by default), rakes in millions in the process - and then sits in judgement of Christian ministries via their reporting.

I left out a few words; I meant to say, "...but I have NO regard for a national media that earns millions - and then questions the salaries of another operation."
johnlorican 4 years ago
The national media is our only true defense against scam artists like Jim Bakker. They shine the ligh on the all too often dark subjects of politics, sex and religion. They earn their money reporting the news that we, the viewers, watch for free.Asking the salary of any man or woman who urge their viewers to send in money in the name of God is not out of line, john. That's good reporting. That's for us, and Jim Bakker's victims to know.
westeightyone 4 years ago 5
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I have no problem with the 'national media' acting like a societal watchdog. This issue then becomes - who's watching the national media? Over the last twenty years, a 'counter-cultural' conservative media has grown immensely, largely due to the fact that the mainstream media has had a tremendous bias in what they chose to report and how it was reported. As David Brinkley said shortly before his death, 'the news is whatever we tell the American public what is is...'
johnlorican 4 years ago
Uh-huh.Yeah.Who's watching the national media?Nice diversionary tactic, john. Now what?Is the degree to which some thing is wrong based on how some thing wrong is reported?Aren't some things just wrong regardless of how much or how little attention they receive in press.Would
Jim Bakker be any less guilty if he hadn't been exposed in the media?Maybe Jim could have set up house with Jessica Hahn if the national media hadn't interferred.
westeightyone 4 years ago 7

It's not a 'diversionary tactic' - I'm not into tactics. I'm interested in the TRUTH...and, personally, I sincerely believe the mainstream media is not desirous of the TRUTH. They are desirous of implementing their own agenda and claiming 'objectivity'...and this, of course, has nothing to do with Jim Bakker's misbehavior.
johnlorican 4 years ago
The TRUTH is subjective, john. Not objective. The best that you and I can hope for is that we remain TRUE to what we,
as individuals believe is important.I've never given a penny to Bakker or any of his cronies but I maintain that he should not be allowed back on tv.I'm offended that he has been allowed to return to the very media that allowed him to take advantage of his followers in the first place.
That's not forgiveness, john. That's turning the 'weapon' back over to the 'criminal'.

2 + 2 would not = 4 in that particular instance.

I have to clarify something here. There were no timeshares! It was a three night stay free at the Heritage Grand. Jay Bakker said it best. He stated that his dad had been jailed for doing the same thing that Delta Airlines does every day; they overbook airline flights, knowing that not it's not probable that everyone is going to make the flight, and them "bump" them if it is overcrowded.
dontbugme2206 4 years ago
Do you honestly believe that the average PTL viewer whould have gotten that 'free' hotel stay without paying
the suggested 'donation'?You've clarified your gullibility it you said 'yes'.Funny how Jay Bakker compared his father's bogus hotel package deal to an airlines flight deal. Why wouldn't he compare it to another hotel package deal? It's because Jay Bakker is every bit as full of crap as his father.

Oh wait, the Charlotte Observer retracted that story.
dontbugme2206 4 years ago
There WERE gold faucets regardless of what YOU try to convince yourself of.SOLID GOLD FAUCETS were shown and DISCUSSED in the news reports.Just because Jim Bakker says he's capable of telling the truth doesn't mean Jim Bakker is capable of telling the truth.
Oh wait, Charlotte Observer retraction or not, Bakker lived a lavish, decadent lifestyle on donations sent in for the supposed good works of the PTL Ministry.
westeightyone 4 years ago 7
You are correct that there is lots of misinformation about PTL. But there were gold faucets. I spent 2 years there and there were gold faucets and drain flanges in a jacuzzi in his executive office in the "pyramid building." I saw them myself. It's not a rumor or second hand info. I know firsthand they were gold, not just colored gold. I have no ill will toward Jim and (RIP) Tammy. But, there was plenty of luxury in the executive offices and in the Bakker home.

The solicitation of $ from Bakker's television viewers was based on a lie.Regardless of whether the courts found him guity or not, Jim Bakker lied to his followers when he told them that their donation money was being used to keep PTL on the air.He would not have received one penny if he told his viewers that their money was being used to support his decadent lifestyle. actually, most of viewers $ went toward bakker's insatiable desire to build and expand the theme pk. heritage usa. remember, his was a prosperity ministry & so most of his viewers expected him to live well. it was the media & the public that looked askance at his wealth along w/a dis. att. in charlotte n.c. that hated him.

Once again, If you cannot learn to forgive someone.. why should you be forgiven? How many times have you stolen, or lied, or committed adultry, or hated someone? I could keep going on.. but that right there shows you, and mankind's true nature.

What does my/your/anyone's PERSONAL history have to do with BAKKER'S CRIMES against the PUBLIC?
Bakker went on TELEVISION day after day, week after week, year after year urging his faithful,
trusting followers to give whatever they could to keep him on the air.Was ALL the donation money used to keep Jim ON the air?Or was SOME of it being used to support Jim's decadent lifestyle OFF the air?

did NOT make Jim Bakker a CRIMINAL.Jim Bakker's trusting, faithful followers did NOT make Jim Bakker a criminal.JIM BAKKER committed his crimes.Television
was the WEAPON he used to commit those crimes.
Television is the WEAPON he's using now against
"forgiving" people like you.You call yourself "forgiving",xamire?I call you GULLIBLE.
Turn off the television.Jim Bakker's coming on.

Deeds not words, Jazzzco.Bakker proposed voluntarily auditing himself to reduce the possibility of anyone from the IRS scrutinizing his books.Time has proven Bakker to be an unscrupulous scoundrel. He was not a good man then nor is he a good man now.Have you ever heard Bakker admit that he deserved to be punished for his crimes.Judging by Jim Bakker's lack of remorse, I'd say he was,is and always will be,
a man who strongly believes that his only "SIN" was getting caught.

You haven't.You're lucky GULLIBILITY isn't a sin, jazzco. You'd be headed straight to Hell.

Jim fleeced his television flock by pulling the wool over their eyes. The fact is you can't recognize the truth. You've been blinded by the light of your tv set.

What I'm saying is that Jim Bakker was eventually found to be guilty of no crime. It sounds as if you disagree with the solicitation of his viewers for $ but that solicitation was not found to be a crime. Untenable in the minds of many but not criminal.

He is a crook and a liar,Do you think this man only had one affair while married to Tammi?
He is a smooth talking con man who used faith to line his pockets with cash.

Jim and Tammy were wonderful people. Jim just sinned, and made some mistakes. We have all been down that path. But God is big enough to bring anyone back to him, and back to his truths.

As a believer I take from this 1 big lesson - "your sin will find you out." JBakker commited adultery, repented and moved on. Yrs. later his partner in adultery comes forward to extort $ for her silence. Using the ministries discretionary funds - she was paid. Had he come forward, confessed and refused to pay her imagine how different it might have been.

"Your sin will find you out." There but for the grace of God go I. It must be painful to have your sin aired in public - sure hope mine shall never be.
