This is the standard size for an ALICE pack but when in use by soldiers it is packed full and has a lot of other stuff attached to the outside making it look bigger.
Right, I can see that your pack and mine are the same, only mine is missing parts that have been eaten by mice and I don't have the metal supports. I got mine out of the Rincon Fire Station tool bin after the pack was recovered after being up on Windy Gap for a year or two.
I use the same pack all the time, I do wrap extra "emergecy" cord around the frame (50ft of 550 cord) a ferricium fire striker and knife to the cross bars of the frame. I've humped 15+ miles/day for a week with that pack (started out at 30.5 lbs mostly food) and love it better that the common hikers backbacks not to mention the price difference....
on that long of a trek, your gonna want to get a belt, one should have come attached to your kidney pad, but can be passed threw behind it
loosen shoulder straps all the way, put pack on, take each strap in a hand, and take out the slack, adjusting it up your back, buckle belt, then snug up shoulders.
on each shoulder strap, below the quick release, is a "tab", with a hole/loop, pulling on loop will drop thepack off you
@dreamthinker79 Thanks for the advice! I didn't get the belt with it so I will pick something up and make it work. I have hiked using a belt on other packs and I agree it helps a lot to remove the weight from your shoulders. Without it, uphill hikes are painful to say the least.
its my pack of choice for longer hikes, cause its the only pack i have, and also cause of its external frame design, lets your back breath, and has more versatility
ive lugged millions of lbs of wood on my frame alone. not to mention deer, hogs, and turkeys.
the holes/grommets on the alice webbing, is there, cause of the system in place till the alice was developed, Jhook, or S hook, or something, needless to say it sucked
that gave me a chuckle, ive had my Med alice for 15 years now.
the alice pack, is a pack that you can atach anything to, it has loops for a sleep system on the bottom, of the pack, and frame, you could also put it up top, under the compression straps if you wish, you can literaly attach anything, to anywhere on the pack
That's neat! It does look almost like the one I have. Is there an internall dividing compartment so that the inside is two parts with metal buttons for a flap?

@Vyppaaa11 Thanks. I had heard the name used with packs like this before. Appreciate the info.

@mobiltec No problem, I prefer the large GI alice but the medium is good for shorter trips.

@Vyppaaa11 Yes it's great for short trips and that's about all I do anymore.

Good to know you can take it that far without getting painful... Im going to use it on a 120 mile hike next year.

I put a 80oz and 100oz camelback bladders in the top inside pouch and run the hose to my shoulder strap. That is a plus for me.

theres no way to put a sleeping bag on a pack like that is there?
paintballbot 2 years ago
On an external frame pack like the one above you tie it or attach it to the bottom of the pack, I have used it and it's what most people do

The thing I like about the frame is it lets your back breath so as you sweat the air can get through there and cool you off.

good point I have worn packs that make you sweat!!
